1. Introduction

FR-basic-Vis/NIR is an electro-optical instrument that includes a VIS/NIR light source (350nm -

2000nm) and a high resolution spectrometer (500nm – 1100nm). This tool is shipped with the

appropriate software (FR-Monitor) and is capable to perform high accuracy

absorbance/transmittance, and reflectance measurements. For the optical connection the FR-basic-

Vis/NIR has build-in standard SMA905 connectors (for both light source and spectrometer), while the

communication with the computer is made with a USB 2.0 port.

2. Warranty

FR-basic-Vis/NIR tool is covered with a 2 year warranty for all components except:

The circuit break

The replacement of the Vis-NIR bulb.

The warranty doesn’t cover the inappropriate use of the tool and the external

components that may be supplied with the FR-basic-Vis/NIR, such as optical fibers,

special holders, or sampling accessories.

4. Installation

WARNING! DO NOT CONNECT THE USB CABLE TO YOUR PC BEFORE

INSTALLING THE FR-MONITOR SOFTWARE AND

BEFORE READING THIS INSTALLATION GUIDE

Step1. Plug-in the 230V power cable (fig. 1b, No. 4)

Step2. Switch on the main power (fig. 1b, No. 5)

Note: The main power indicator (fig. 1a, No. 1) should illuminate and the fan (fig. 1b No. 8) should

operate. If not please refer to the troubleshooting section

Step3. Switch on the light source (fig. 1a, No. 2)

Step4. Connect the USB cable to the computer with appropriate software (FR-Monitor) already

installed (fig. 1b, No. 6).

Note: If the software is not installed, the spectrometer will not be recognized by the PC and it will be

not possible to neither to acquire spectra nor to operate the light source.

Step5. Connect the appropriate optical fibers to the SMA905 connector of light source output (fig.1c

No9) and to the SMA905 connector of the spectrometer’s input (fig.1c No10) - please, remove first

the protection cup- according to the desirable measurement set-up. Execute the appropriate

software (FR-Monitor). Instructions on how to execute the selected software and how to configure

the various measurements set-up are listed in software’s manual.

Step6. Place the reference wafer below the reflection probe and adjust the light intensity with the

knob (fig. 1a, No. 3).

Note: The electronic circuit controlling the light source is especially designed to smoothly increase or

decrease the light intensity output when the knob turns to a new setting. So wait a couple of seconds

before performing the next measurements.

Now FR-Basic is ready for use. Please read the software manual for the instructions to perform the

desired measurements.

5. Interior access

WARNING! To access the interior of FR-Basic, is quite easy and is

performed without any tools. ANY ACTION FROM PERSONNEL

WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING MAY DAMAGE SOME OF THE

COMPONENTS. In this case the guarantee is no valid.

Step1. Unplug any electronic, electrical and optical connections from FR-Basic. Make sure you have

removed any parts (e.g. samples) mounted on the optical workbench and secure any installed

accessories on the assembly rails.

Step2. Move FR-Basic towards you and 10cm in front of the workbench to be possible to reach the

case knobs located at the bottom of the tool (refer to fig. 2a).

Step3. Gently lift up the upper top of the tool all the way (approximately 80o), fig. 3a and 3b.

Note: A pneumatic arm located in the interior of the tool prevents opening at higher angles. Make

sure you lift the upper top gently otherwise, FR-basic may overbalance.

After unscrew the case knobs, gently lift up the upper structure. An overview of the interior sub-

blocks of the instrument is shown in fig. 3a. In figs. 3b, images of the various sub-blocks are shown.

6. Change Lamp

To change the bulb, loose the screw, fig. 3a, remove gently the already installed bulb and unplug the

two power connectors. Then mount the spare bulb and plug again the power connectors.

Warning: If the instrument was in use the light source will be very hot. To

proceed with the bulb replacement allow for cool down of the unit.

Warning: Don’t touch the glass part of the lamp with bare hand.

8. Troubleshooting

Main Power Button Fail

If after the switch on of the main power button the indication lamp (in the front panel) doesn’t light up and the Fan doesn’t start, please check:

If the power inlet is connected with a working power supply (230VAC or 115VAC)

If the 5A fuse located in power inlet is broken. In that case please replace it with of 5A Slow Blow fuse. To check the fuse or to replace it, DISCONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY CABLE.

If the problem persists, please contact your local distributor.

Lamp Ignition If the Light Source doesn’t start up, please check:

If there is a power supply, then check if lamp is broken.

If the problem persists, please contact your local distributor.

The Spectrometer doesn’t work or the software doesn’t acquire spectra.

In that case, please check:

If the USB cable is connected to the computer and if the cable is not damaged.

Be sure that in the computer that is connected the FR-basic tool, the appropriate software is already installed

Repeat the Step1 – Step6 procedure and be sure that when you connect the USB cable to the FR-basic tool the Main Power Switch and the Light Source switch are already switch on.
