Between You and MeDate: 29th April, 2010
Dear Friend,
The last fi nancial year, 2009-2010, had been eventf ul, and in spite of dwindling senti ments, in the beginning of the year, in view of a global slowdown; the economy sti ll managed to move back to the growth trajectory. There are now hopes of setti ng new benchmarks of economic growth and being able to move towards sustained double digit growth levels in the coming years.
With respect to fi nancial advisory profession too, there have been a lot of developments in the last year, which would help shape the directi on, build the structure and set the standards, for delivery of ethical and unbiased advisory, based on the standards of accountability and Fiduciary Responsibility.
Owing to its robust standards of educati on, examinati on, experience and ethics, CFP ceti fi cati on is clearly emerging as an aspirati onal qualifi cati on; to meet the need gap in fi nancial advisory domain, worldwide amongst professionals engaged/wishing to get engaged, in delivery of fi nancial advisory to the consumers. The number of the CFP Professionals increased globally by 6.4% to 126,016 in the last year.
In India, the number of CFPCM certi fi cants crossed 1,000-mark and increased by 45% during FY2009-10, to reach 1,049. The proclivity of the young in India towards att aining experti se in Financial Planning is implicit in the fact that more than a fi ft h of the CFPCM certi fi cants are under 30 years of age. A majority, over 40%, however, are in the age group 30-40 years, which also underlines their experience of at least 5 years in the fi nancial services industry. Nearly 10,000 people underwent examinati ons for AFP/ CFPCM certi fi cati on during the year with a success rate of more than 53%. The success rate showed an upward shift by 10% during 2009-10. We would conti nue with our eff orts to percolate CFPCM
certi fi cati on within the Financial Advisory universe (both practi sing and aspiring) in the country.
Driving Conti nuous Educati on for CFPCM certi fi cants remains a key acti vity for FPSB India. FPSB India conducted events and held a series of Financial Planning Practi ce Management Workshops at prominent locati ons in the country. A wide array of topics related to Financial Planning Practi ce was covered under these workshops. These workshops also provided a platf orm for healthy discussions on contemporary issues and for updati ng CFPCM certi fi cants on the best practi ces in the industry. In the last year FPSB India also conducted a HR Summit which received a healthy parti cipati on from the leading professionals in the Industry. This summit served to be a networking platf orm for promoti ng CFPCM certi fi cants to the senior HR professionals and recruiters from across the country.
FPSB India conti nues to work closely with the regulators, for the development of the Financial Planning profession and has been releasing several research/white papers in this regard. The last year also witnessed the august visit of Mr. C.B. Bhave, Chairman-Securiti es and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to the offi ce of FPSB India. This was primarily to interact with the staff members of FPSB India, to know the working of FPSB India and also to understand the role of CFPCM Certi fi cati on program in the development of ethical advisory benefi tti ng public at large.
We are also glad to share with you that FPSB India received a Tier I Affi liate Ranking for CFPCM certi fi cati on program from Global Standards-Setti ng Body, FPSB Ltd., in the recently concluded Assessment and was placed amongst their top affi liates. The objecti ve of this assessment was to ensure that CFPCM certi fi cati on program is managed in a manner that best promotes the Financial Planning profession and protects consumers of Financial Planning in India. FPSB India’s commitment to rigorous global standards for the Program and the state-of-the-art examinati on system to simultaneously test candidates across the country were specially appreciated among other deliverables such as Governance, compliance mechanism for Certi fi cati on and Recerti fi cati on, etc.
In the coming year we would conti nue with our eff orts to scale up the Financial Planning movement in the country, and work closely with all the stakeholders for further augmentati on of Financial Planning Profession in the country, and refocus the acti viti es in tune with the consumer needs. We look forward to your support in our eff orts to unify the Financial Planning profession in the country, built around the globally accepted standards, and benefi tti ng all.
Warm Regards,
ranjeet s MudholkarPrincipal Advisor and Member-Board of Directors, FPSB India

She also gave an overview on the Financial Planning industry in Hong Kong by way of a small presentation.
During the course of discussions it emerged that multiple regulatory structure of financial services exists in both Hong Kong as well as in India. However, unlike India, there is a high level of financial literacy among the masses in Hong Kong and some similar qualifications vie with CFP Certification which are recognized by public and institutions. She also highlighted the initiatives taken in the past by IFPHK such as Financial World Expo targeted on consumer literacy, Corporate Social responsibility drives such as Financial Planning Clinics, Financial Education Skits, Ambassador program for secondary school students.
There were multiple takeaways for both the affiliates from this brief interaction. For FPSB India, the positioning of Financial Planning in general and CFPCM Certification, further facilitation of education by having a standardized course material, creating enough incentives and motivating factors for existing certificants are some of the major challenges.
