The Fargo Public School District Summer School Program is an extension of the regular school program that provides an opportunity for students:

to reinforce skills learned during the school year

to explore new areas of interest not available during the regular school year to complete regular course work for credit towards graduation requirements

Courses for High School Credit (Grades 9-12) @ South High

The (EL + MS + HS + Sports/Music) Summer School Office is located at Agassiz, Room 215. During Face-to-Face Fridays in June and July, the Summer School Of-fice will be located in the Career Center at Fargo South High School. Summer school office hours are 8:00-3:00, Monday through Friday. Student/families will receive an email confirmation of their registration from the summer school office and an email from their teacher prior to the first day of class. Students should check their FPS email and summer website for updates.

The following pages describe courses and registration for high school and music/sports camps. Each of the other summer school programs communicate course description and registration in different documents available at school sites across

AVDL = Asynchronous Virtual Distance Learning. The teacher is available for

check-in, to answer questions and to collaborate with a student who is working through the self-paced portions of the class. This is similar to classroom work time in the traditional classroom. Each teacher will communicate check-in expectations for AVDL. In many cases, a teacher may allow a student to complete expected work within or outside of the AVDL designated time slot.

Mondays & Wednesdays

SVDL = Synchronous Virtual Distance Learning. The teacher creates a series of

learning events that involves the student being actively engaged in virtual learning activities in real time. The student is expected to be logged in and “distance connected” for this entire SVDL time as directed by the teacher. This is similar to partner/group/whole class cooperative learning time within the

traditional classroom. Tuesdays & Thursdays

FFF = Face to Face Fridays. COVID phase-in cancels all Face to Face Fridays.

All Fridays will be SVDL.

Face to Face Fridays were intended to be a continuation of a traditional classroom experience with the teacher and all the students sharing a classroom on campus which

has several benefits that aren’t available in true/100% distance learning models.

SPILP = Self-Paced Individual Learning Plan. A sizable portion of a given

course’s standards, learning and ELOs (Essential Learning Outcomes) will be addressed through self-paced learning during AVDL that will be integrated into

the cooperative and collaborative learning of SVDL and FFF class meetings.

21st Century Skills = The 4 C’s are identified as critical skills to succeed in

the modern world and workplace:

Critical Thinking + Creativity + Collaboration + Communication

PLE = Plato Learning Environment (Edmentum Company). PLE is a

comprehensive distance learning platform and suite of classes utilized in part or whole by many distance learning schools. Most of the FPS SS high school courses-for-credit teachers will use PLE as a component of SPLIP. Some teachers

may utilize a different distance learning platform.

SS Hybrid Model Definitions and Expectations

Update 5-11-2020. All summer classes will be 100% distance learning.

Summer school is delivered in a hybrid model that includes distance/virtual learning and on-campus face-to-face learning when COVID phase-in restrictions allow it. The summer school hybrid model is markedly different from the recent distance learning plan

implemented during initial COVID outbreak, because in summer school, a student is only working through one class (and possibly PE) at a time instead of the 6-8 classes a typical

student takes during a regular semester.

Learning Modality Expectations Attendance Procedures

From the end of the previous M/W AVDL class

3. Hours of absence count towards the maximum

Friday FFF (SVDL) Attendance Procedure:

Required: Traditional school attendance expectations

to be on-time and to remain with the class through

the entire designated FFF class period.




3. If FFF can’t be held, the class will meet SVLD

with SVDL expectations.

ATTENDANCE: 100% Distance Learning (5-11-2020 COVID Update)

Summer school classes must be scheduled to meet ND Department of Instruction minimum seat time

requirements, which are 60 hours for all classes except science and CTE which require 75 hours.

1. Students are expected to attend all sessions. If absent, the student is required to do all make-up work. 2. If a student exceeds 4.5 total hours of accumulated absence, the student will receive a withdraw/fail

from the summer school course. 3. BE ON TIME (SVDL and FFF)! All tardies or excused early exits exceeding 5 minutes will be rounded up

to the next half hour. Tardy/early exit time will count towards total allowable absence time (4.5 hours). 4. Students must be present for the full class meeting on the last day of each session (Finals + ELOs). 5. If a student is unable to participate in all activities required by curriculum, the course will need to be

taken at another time.

FPS Policies remain in effect and are applicable during summer school.

100% Distance Learning FPS Summer School 2020 will be delivered in a 100% Distance Learning Model due to COVID restrictions. No classes will be held face to face or on campus.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR Summer school differs markedly from the regular school year in that participation of students is entirely voluntary. Any student, who, through tardiness, absenteeism, poor work habits or classroom disturbance, distracts from the summer school experience instead of adding to it, will be dropped from the course. We are all here by choice.

DISCRIMINATION, HARASSMENT AND VIOLENCE (AP 6060) Discrimination, harassment and violence activities of any type are inconsistent with the educational goals of the school district and are prohibited at all times. This policy ensures a safe learning environment for students and safe work environment for staff members and community guests.

PARKING Use designated student parking lots. No parking permit is required for summer school. Use available bi-cycle racks and a locking mechanism. Bicycles should not be locked to trees, lighting/flag poles, etc.

CHEMICAL VIOLATION Come to school (virtual and in-person) with a clear head. Tobacco-Alcohol-Drugs-Narcotics are strictly prohibited in the school or on school grounds, in the parking lot, or at any school sponsored activity, in-cluding distance sessions. A violation will result in expulsion from summer school and the proper authori-ties will be notified.

WEAPONS Possession of a weapon on school property is strictly prohibited. A violation will result in expulsion from summer school and the proper authorities will be notified.

DRESS Students are expected to dress “school” appropriate for both virtual and on-campus class meetings. Dress in ways that are conducive to learning for self/others, quality work and positive image. The following is expected at all times:

Clothing with opaque fabric that covers the student’s chest, sides of body, midriff, and their entire undergarments must be worn.

Pants/Jeans or the equivalent (i.e., skirt, sweatpants, leggings, dress, or shorts) long enough to cover the student’s private areas must be worn. Pants/Jeans or the equivalent should be secured not to reveal undergarments.

Shoes must be worn.

Clothing advertising or promoting the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, guns, weapons or depiction of violence may not be worn.

Vulgar clothing of any kind may not be worn.

Vulgar is defined as pictures, images, words, silhouettes of individuals, or sayings that depict sexually suggestive expressions or actions, profanity, obscenity, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, or which degrade the integrity of individual groups.

Hats, hoods, or head coverings may not be worn in the building with the exception of a religious purpose, documented medical need, or with special approval by the administrator for special school events/celebrations/circumstance.

Class Materials and PLD’s Students are responsible for classroom books or materials they are issued. A student will pay for lost or damaged books/materials. Grades will not be released and credits will not be earned until all materials are returned.

PLD collection details will be sent to students/families.

(Registration for Coop classes must be done through your Coop teacher by May 13th)

This is a cooperative work experience program whereby students who are eligible to participate must contact the instructor who then provides them with a summer school application form. Students are supervised and evaluated on-site at their assigned work stations. Conference times are arranged independently with each student in the program.

Program is limited to 45 students. Only those students that are enrolled in the Air

Force JROTC Program for the 2020/2021 school year are eligible to attend SLS.

This is a 6 day live-in encampment at Camp Wilderness in Park Rapids, MN. Students attending will be instructed in self-improvement, standards and expectations, welfare, and hygiene. Students learn the heritage and organizational traditions of AFJROTC, proper flag etiquette, and personal behavior. Activities include aircraft orientation flights, team building activities, kayaking, zip-lining, rock climbing, and physical fitness competitions. UNIFORM ISSUE IS MANDATORY TO ATTEND SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL (SLS) All persons must call (701) 446-2295 to arrange for uniform issue. Uniform issue appoint-

ments will not be taken until 1 May. The last day for uniform issue will be 18 May.

Prior to attending SLS, students must have release forms signed by parent/guardian. The

forms are available online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/afjrotc under the SLS Forms tab.

Need-based scholarships to cover the $100 fee are available through the AFJROTC Parents

Group. See the AFJROTC website (www.fargo.k12.nd.us/afjrotc) for application.

Signed forms must be turned in by 27 May.

HIGHWAY SAFETY/BEHIND THE WHEEL

STUDENT MUST BE 14 YEARS OLD PRIOR TO THE START DATE OF CLASS!

A permit is strongly recommended when driving with our instructors, but not mandatory.

A student must complete both Highway Safety class and Behind the Wheel to get the

North Dakota Education Student Completion Certificate (this is needed to receive a driv-

er’s license in ND). Students will receive these the last day of class if they pass all areas.

* Please keep these documents in a secure place. You will need them later.

HIGHWAY SAFETY CLASSROOM PORTION (No Fee for Highway Safety Classroom)

This half-credit elective class (A-F Graded) follows the semester #1 or Semester #2 class schedule.

HIGHWAY SAFETY BEHIND THE WHEEL (BTW) PORTION ($270 Class Fee)

All students in the FPS program must complete highway safety through FPS to qualify for BTW.

BEHIND THE WHEEL (BTW) is COVID POSTPONED

Once COVID restrictions are lifted, we will begin scheduling behind-the-wheel times that may con-

tinue into after school driving times during the regular school year. A family may cancel BTW any

time prior to the their student starting BTW sessions for a 100% refund.

Instruction includes driving and observation experiences in the city, on highways, and on the in-

terstate. Behind-the-Wheel driving time occurs outside the scheduled class time and must be

scheduled with the instructor. Students must set up 6 hours of drive time and 6 hours of obser-

vation time before or after class.

Students are not allowed to use cell phones or other personal electronic devices during drive time,

observation time, and class time.

FPS uses dash-cam video devices in the vehicles used for behind-the-wheel. By registering for this course, you acknowledge that recordings may be used in classroom instruction.

OBTAINING A ND DRIVER’S LICENSE

A permit is needed regardless of age if the student has not been licensed before.

You must have a permit a minimum of 1 year before taking the driving test.

The minimum age to get a permit is 14.

Until age 16, you must have a permit to practice driving with a parent or other licensed driver.

- Parents and other drivers must have had a driver’s license for at least 3 years and be at least 18 years old.

Behind the Wheel and Highway Safety are not required after 16 years old (but are a good idea).

FPS Highway Safety Program utilizes the ND DOT Road Test Waiver which can replace the road

test that is required to obtain a ND driver’s license. Students are expected to work diligently and

closely with their teachers so they are able meet the required expectations to receive the road-test-

waiver approval. FPS highway safety instructors will thoroughly communicate this option with

students and parents.

ENGLISH LEARNERS (EL) CLASSES

These classes are designed to support language learning, academic skill building, and cultural acquisition. These are referral based classes and registration forms will be sent to parents.

ELD SUMMER SCHOOL K-12: Semester 1 = June 3 or 4 to June 26 100% Distance Learning; No classes will happen face to face on campus. Grades 9-12 follow the high school distance learning schedule. * Grades 9-12 will start distance learning on June 3. * Grade 9-12 students can earn a 1/2 credit elective. Grades K-8 have a different distance learning schedule Monday-Thursday * M-Th = 8:00-11:30; Fridays = 8:00—12:30 * Grades K-8 will start distance learning on June 4. High School Credit Classes and Sports/Music Camp Registration Information

Classes will be filled on a “first come and priority” basis. If classes are filled, students will

be placed on a waiting list. If a student drops out of a class, the first person on the waiting list has the opportunity to move into the class. Parents will be notified if a student has been moved off the waiting list.

Student/Family Decides to Cancel a SS Registration

If the student no longer requires summer school, parents must formally withdraw the student from the course before JUNE 3, 2020 for Semester 1 and JUNE 24, 2020 for Semester 2. If a student does NOT drop a class before these dates, they will receive a W/F (withdraw/fail) for that class.

Summer School Cancels a Class

Adequate student enrollment is necessary for a class to be held. If summer school needs to cancels a particular class, the summer school office will notify all registered students on/near the last day of registration. The student of the canceled class will be able to contact the summer school office to register for a different, available class though the official registration window closed

at the same time their class was canceled.

Waiver ($200) for Out-of-Fargo Public School District Student(s)

To be eligible to receive a waiver credit, a student must:

* Have graduated from the 8th grade * Be a resident of North Dakota * Provide their ND state ID number (10 digit #) and their home school plant number

Any eligible student may use the waiver form authorizing the Fargo Schools to receive any state aid available FOR THE SUMMER ONLY. This waiver form will allow the student to register at

the same rate as district students. Use the form at the bottom of the page.

Out-of-state resident student will be charged a fee of $200.00 for each one-half credit course. * This fee will also apply to out-of-district North Dakota resident students who do not furnish the waiver form completed by their home district.

The waiver policy applies only to courses where credit is earned toward graduation and therefore does not apply for non-credit secondary courses or any elementary course.

It is further understood that the student will assume all costs of any course fees and/or supplies and that no encumbrances of any kind will be placed on the home school district of said student.
