House News TORO HINOMARU Report by Mrs Holder

Toro House has had a great first term. It has been fantastic to see so many of our stu-dents involved in Tug-of-War, Cross-Country, the variety show, lip-sync battles and all of the other brilliant opportunities they have here at Colfox.

Outside of school, several of our students are doing very well as well. Aidan Cooper is a kick boxing star

who is gaining belts and titles at a fantastic rate. He is dedicated to getting more and more titles as time goes on, a great start for a young man who is still only in year 8.

Many students have taken lead roles in the school play which was in October, the variety show (with Cameron Cumpstone winning due to his „mad‟ Rubik‟s Cube skills) and so many other school activities.

Other students have also done exceptional work, both inside and outside of school, and it has been great to be able to praise and reward so many of them for their achievements. As a house we have won several com-petitions and the house spirit is building! We have our sights set on winning many more and, with the great team spirit within Toro, we can achieve this.

Keep an eye on the Toro website page for half termly updates and a great insight into the goings on in the House.

Report by Mr Bartlett

It has been an amazing autumn term for Hinomaru House. We achieved success at inter-house tug of war and had a fantastic fundraising effort for Children in Need for our charity day. Special praise must be given to Damian Barnard in year 7 who raised £100 and Jed Holt who ran the furthest distance in our fun run 10km! Thank you so much to everyone that took part and helped raise over £700. Lots of our students have participated this term from colouring club, to the school play and in sports teams.

Our year 8-tutor group presented a key assembly this term on the future. They looked at all the unbelievable technology that has entered our lives in the last twenty years and what is to come such as holograms in 2020 and flying cars in 2050. It promoted lots of curiosity in our students thinking about what the next great invention will be to impact on our lives.

I would also like to give a special mention to: Jake Childs (who was awarded man of the match for the year 7 football team). Maddy Herbert, May Smith, Ellen Pearce, Daisy Parsons, Rosie Howell, Chiara Sidebotham and Henri Percival (for all their support as Edge Ambassadors in helping our year 7s get going on the programme). Tilly Christmas (great leadership of the House Council). Ryan Williams (for his role as Oliver), Esther Stone, Caitlin Jones, Rosey Botwright, Frankie Golding, Bryn Fitzgerald, Todd O’Rourke (involvement in the school play). Cara Lennon, Jenny Hallett, Libby Beecham, Zoe Lake and all the Hinomaru buddies for all their support in helping our young students have an enjoyable school life.

House News ADLER FLEUR DE LYS

Report by House Captain Amber Thomas

Over the course of this term Fleur De Lys has done magnificently well. Throughout the past three months, there have been many inter-house events such as the variety show and the cross country. Out of these two events Fleur De Lys has come 1st (in

Cross Country) and 2nd (in the Variety Show).

These victories were due to a large amount of participation throughout the house. As well as these competitions, Fleur De Lys also did well in terms of the amount of participation and energy that went into the Tug of War; for some tutor groups, this year showed the highest levels of „house spirit‟ and everybody joining in and working together.

Report by Miss Hull

It has been a busy term with students participating in: sports events, Adler charity day, the talent show, the lip syncing competition, Tug of War and many other events!

Adler Charity Day was a strong focus for our first half term. We were busy planning, selling raffle tickets and organising events for the actual day. It was a fantastic day with over £400 being raised; more spon-sorship money has been handed in and will take the total close to £500. Special mention has to go to the following Year 8 students for completing a sponsored silence, and between them raising lots of money: Ned Seal, Maddy Hill, Libby Wright, Erin Parker, Leia Benneyworth, Abbie Bird, Rowan Symes, Megan Rogers, Kirsty Willats and Millie Taylor. Also spe-cial mention to Dane James for being brave enough to raise money through waxing his legs (his screams filled the school!)

This term has seen the Year 7s finding their feet, all have been eager and enthusiastic and some have been very pro-active! Lily Foote sent a letter to her local MP about plastic bag waste and what can be done about it; she even received a reply.

This year saw the first Colfox inter- house lip syncing competition! Students had to lip sync their chosen song and be recorded doing so. Special mention has to be given to James Filosopo with his brilliant con-tribution; so brilliant in fact that he won!

A fantastic term from all! Well done Adler.

Classical Civilisation

Trip to Reading Report by Mr Bartlett

The Year 11 Classical Civilisation class visited the URE Museum at the University of Reading. The students spent time looking at the artefacts and pottery showing life in the Ancient World allowing them to look at how the Ancient people recorded different aspects of their lives and their devotion to the gods.

The student experienced University lectures about the Athenian festival, the City of Dionysia and Comedy and Tragedies in the lives of Athenians from experts in these fields of study.

The group were also given a tour around the University to see some different aspects of University life and asked a current student about her experiences. The visit was a great success and has provided students with some wider knowledge and understanding beyond what is required for their GCSE course and it has showed them what they can do with Classical Civilisation in the future. My sincere gratitude to Charlotte Williams who put together a very engaging programme. All students were a real credit to themselves and the school.

Government and Politics Trip to

Westminster Report by Mr Bartlett

This was a brilliant experience for the first cohort of Government and Politics students on a momentous day in the History of British Politics as MPs voted to begin Airstrikes on Syria. After a very early start, we eventually arrived at the Houses of Parliament .

After swiftly manoeuvring our way through security we entered into the grandeur of Westminster Hall, a place

Trips And Visits that used to host banquets for kings but more recently has played host to speeches from Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama. We then met our tour guide who led us to central lobby passing busts of past Prime Ministers, Robert Walpole and William Pitt the Younger to name two.

We travelled through the side Chambers of the House of Lords before returning to the central lobby through the Lords. On this journey students were amazed by the ‟23 carat gold‟ decorated rooms and the paintings of triumphal moments in British History. The tour guide was fantastic and provided students with a great historical lesson about the Palace of Westminster and regularly questioned them on the how‟s and why‟s of its workings. Matt Webb demonstrated his encyclopaedic knowledge of British Government and Politics, impressing the tour guide!

We then took the decision to queue for the House of Commons viewing gallery to witness the debate. After over an hour of waiting we were finally given the opportunity to enter the gallery and witness speeches from Labour stalwarts Margaret Beckett and Alan Johnson and their decisions that they were going to be voting for military action. It was fascinating for students to listen to the debate and observe how MPs conduct themselves in the chamber.

To round off the day we visited Westminster Abbey. Students explored a building filled with a rich history from the graves of English Kings and Queens to memorials of some of Britain‟s greatest laureates in Poet‟s Corner.

It was a brilliant day and students thoroughly enjoyed visiting parliament and gaining an insight into what they will be studying after Christmas when they learn about the British executive and legislature. Students were a credit to themselves and the sixth form and I hope it has whetted their appetites to ask The Rt Honourable Oliver Letwin MP some good questions about his job as our MP in the New Year!

At the half way point the 6th form and Year 10/11 team were neck and neck and the younger boys and girls teams were separated by just one lap. After over two hours of running the mixed Yr10-11 team crossed the line in 2:03:58, closely followed by the 6th form team in 2:06. Unbelievably, after 105 laps the younger boys and girls changed batons for the final time at the same time and the boys ended up beating the girls by just 5 seconds!

It was a fantastic day, made even better when we realised that we had raised over £1200 for Save the Children. The Sir John Colfox Academy would like to thank the volunteers from Save the Children for supporting the event and our incredible students for going that extra mile (or 26!) to make a difference.

Colfox Go The Extra Mile For Save The Children Report by Mr David

The weather could not have been better for the one hundred Sir John Colfox Academy students who gathered on the school playing fields to complete the 2015 Save the Children World Marathon on Tuesday 29th September. This is the third time the school hadscompleted the 26.21 miles and it was a great opportunity to do two things they are very good at - running and raising money!

This year the school had four teams completing the challenge and at 9.30am Chris Dobbs from the Bridport branch of Save the Children started the race. James Noonan led off the 6th form, Frankie Chant the Year 7-9 boys, Bronwyn Wright for the Year 7-9 girls and Dane James for the Yr10-11 mixed team.

Mrs Taylor also reflected on the future changes for education in the town as they become part of the Minerva Learning Trust. “The Trust will give our schools the chance to take control of their own destiny”, she said. She emphasised how important education was as it was “the key determinant of success financially and in a career” but that there is also “a direct link between education and health and personal wellbeing”.

Mr Colin Chapman, the Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Dorset was the guest speaker. He outlined some of the key youth programmes that the service has been involved in such as their link with the Princes Trust and The Safer People and Responsible Communities Project. He said, “I have seen what a real difference these projects can make to the life chances of teenagers”.

He also emphasised that the key role of the fire service is to prevent fires and accidents and highlighted the work done, including at The Sir John Colfox Academy, on safe driving and accident prevention. Dorset has been particular-ly successful in this part of their role – they attend fewer fires than others because of this effective preventative work.

Mr Chapman is retiring this year and he reflected on his own education, his work experiences and the experiences of his children. From this he was able to offer the students his 16 Top Tips. They ranged from quoting the book “Bounce” by Matthew Syed which demonstrates that practice and hard work are more important than talent, to assuring students there is really not a “laundry fairy” who magically deals with their washing – as they will learn when they leave home!

A range of local dignitaries and sponsors including Mr Andrew Harrison (Creeds), Sir Philip Colfox and Mr Don Morley attended to present their awards.

AT GCSE Philippa Cleden took the award sponsored by Groves Nurseries, for the best overall performance by a girl and Eric Robertshaw the equivalent prize for a boy, sponsored by Bradfords.

News

At the Sir John Colfox Senior Prize Giving academic success and the students‟ contribution to the school and community were celebrated.

The Headteacher highlighted how well the school and its students had performed in 2015. At „A‟ level the progress has been outstanding for three years in a row. At GCSE the recent Government report showed all groups of students in the school – boys, girls, SEN, disadvantaged, more able – doing much better than the national average and better than would have been predicted.

Mrs Taylor said, “A true compre-hensive school like ours has to meet the needs of all the students. I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of the staff and students that I have worked with over the years. They have taken the vision of what a comprehensive school could be and they have made it a reality”.

Grace Symes took the prize for best vocational student, sponsored by Liberty Kitchens, and Kieran Mulhall for best progress, sponsored by Hays Teaching Agency.

At AS level Villo Bernad took the award for best perfor-mance by a girl at AS, sponsored by Creeds the Printers, and Zachary Reeve the boys‟ trophy, sponsored by Bridport Sports. For A level Grace Crabtree won the girls‟ award and William Jones the boys‟. Jason Larcombe received a special award for progress in the Sixth Form, sponsored by Hays Teaching Agency and Serena Knollman won the Lions Community Award.

There were some outstanding nominations for community prizes across all year groups and Mrs Taylor stressed that it was extremely difficult to pick a winner from these students.

In year 10 Rhiannon Parker took the Humphrey Dibdin Award for contribution to the school and community.

Rhiannon Parker has taken part in more school events over her 4 years at Colfox than many others manage. Last year alone, she took part in Badminton, Tennis officiating, inter-house Hockey, Netball, Rounder‟s, Cross-country, Choir, Rock Challenge, Tug-of-war, cricket. She also belongs to clubs outside school. Her dedication to sports has led to her becoming Vice-Sports Captain for Toro house.

Not only is she a sportswoman, she is also involved in the school choir and supports drama productions and has taken part in the carol service every year so far. She took part in the Variety Show again this year making this every year so far.

She is also an Anti-Bullying Ambassador and works hard to ensure that we have a supportive culture in school. She volunteers as a youth leader to help shape the children of tomorrow.

Amber Thomas took the year 11 prize, sponsored by Carpet World. She is an exceptional student and a positive role model; her commitment to the school and wider community is inspiring. As a House Captain for

Fleur de Lys, Amber is dedicated to the work she carries out and is supportive to the students she meets in her role. As well as her in-school commitment, Amber does a tremendous amount for the wider community. She volunteers in Oxfam on Saturdays and she has also volunteered in Bridport library throughout the summer. She is a young leader at Weycroft Mill, a Christian residential centre. Furthermore, Amber runs activities at the summer holiday club at The United Reformed Church in Bridport.

She helps with church services regularly and has done sponsored sleepovers in church and is doing a sponsored night walk in January to raise money for refugees.

Amber is a talented writer and she writes articles for the Bridge magazine and she has been approached to write a book review for Trevor Stubbs.

The sixth form award went to Polly Sutcliffe.

Polly Sutcliffe is our current Head Girl and it‟s a role she carries out with real purpose and pride. She is super-efficient and definitely helps to keep the student leadership team on their toes. Polly has been a key part of our RAG week once again. She remains very active outside of school and once per week is a young cubs leader. Polly has been warmly praised for the quality of her own give back time where she works weekly with Year 11 GCSE Chemistry students and with year 9 science as well. Polly if off to study Chemistry next year and has received offers from all her universities already.

Mrs Taylor thanked all the parents for their support. She said, “All the students should be extremely proud of their achievements and we are all extremely proud of them.”

News Colfox Christmas Readathon Report by Mrs Wright

Colfox readers spent a fabulously festive day in pyjamas as they took part in the Colfox Christmas Readathon.

Over 80 students applied to be part of the day, but 30 lucky readers got to spend the whole day in the school library taking part in a range of read-ing activities organised by year 11 students. They snuggled up in front of a Jackanory chair as different members of staff and 6th form students arrived to read to them. They heard extracts from a number of books, from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Hitchhiker‟s Guide to the

Galaxy, Goodnight Mister Tom, Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl and James Joyce. They also listened to year 13 stu-dent Joe Marley read to them in Spanish from a Mexi-can book about a lady who cried so many tears that they used the salt to season their food!

Students also took part in drama games, scrapbook making and storyboarding, whilst staff fought it out in Harry Potter Mastermind which was won magnificently by Miss Townsend with Miss James coming in a close second place.

Visit From Acclaimed Human

Rights Artist Report by Mrs Burgess

On Friday 9th October artists, Ricky Romain and Heather Fallows spent the day in Colfox‟s Art Department running an art workshop on children‟s rights with pupils from all local primary schools.

Assisted by Louise Burgess and Esther Payne, the artists allowed children to explore the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The children picked a Right that was particularly important to them and then interpreted this in a wide range of media.

The event was one of a series of Democracy events organized by local film- maker, Robert Golden and paid for by the Arts Council.

Zoe Collins’ Christmas wish Report by Mrs Carey Zoe Collins has proved that Christmas wishes can come true!

As part of her AQA Unit award certificate, Zoe decided that she wanted to organise a collection for the town‟s food bank „Cupboard Love‟. After much research Zoe created posters and flyers to advertise her collection. Over the course of a week and lots of visits to tutor groups, Zoe collected a huge amount of non -perishable food that will be distributed to many Bridport families this Christmas.

When asked why she felt so strongly about this very worthy cause Zoe replied:

“This collection makes sure that no one will go hungry this Christmas”

“I knew exactly what I wanted to do but making it happen was the hardest part. Lots of people were very generous with their items and I would like to say a big thank you to those who donated”.

When asked if she would do it again Zoe replied:

“I would definitely do this again so that no one goes hungry at Christmas”

We are all very proud of the hard work and thought that Zoe has put into this project and hope that it will inspire others to take on such a challenge in the new year.

Congratulations Zoe

News Rag Week Report by Mr Herbert

The 6th Form were busy in the last week of term with „Rag Week‟ activities. The theme this year was „decades‟. The students allocated days to the 20‟s, 50‟s, 60‟s 70‟s and 90‟s, the aim being to have some fun and raise money for charity. Lots of activities took place during the day: Chocolate Santa and candy cane deliveries, sing -o-grams were very popular, face paint nominations, fortune telling and guess how many sweets in the jar and festive music, not forgetting the now annual 6th Form carols around the Christmas tree on the last day. The various activities in the main hall included: students paying to “cream pie” staff, teachers „lip sync‟ battles and an entertaining interpretation of this year‟s school play „Oliver in 5 minutes‟.

Special mention has to go to the teachers who won the lip sync battle. Mrs Holder, Miss Hull, Miss Crowell, Miss James and Miss Wheeler our very own Spice Girls were a highly polished group!!

The 6th form students always enjoy the involvement with the lower years, who, in turn really support the events and involve themselves with the activities. It was a great way to end the year, a positive and festive atmosphere with students and teachers alike getting involved. Thank you to everyone for helping to raise just over £1000!!

A Level Success Report by Mr Herbert

The fantastic A Levels results in 2015 saw 97% of our Year 13 students gaining a place at their first choice university, the schools best ever return. Last term our current Year 13 were very busy finalising their own applications in the UCAS system for 2016. They have been very successful and even before the deadline the number of students who have received all of their offers back is very pleasing indeed. Special congratulations must go to Grace Crabtree who has just learned that she has been successful in gaining a place at Oxford University. Grace will be reading Fine Art at Ruskin College having already achieved three A*‟s in her A Levels in the summer. Many congratulations Grace.

Oliver! Report by Archie Dunbar &Aidan Holmes-Good

In November many were amazed by a spectacular performance of Oliver! by the Sir John Colfox Academy. The play follows an adventurous young boy, Oliver (Ryan Williams), trying to survive in Victorian Britain, from the workhouse to the streets of London. The plays opening scene starts off with a performance of the crowd pleasing „Food Glorious Food‟. Afterwards a terrified young Oliver approaches the bossy and vile Mr Bumble (Doug Lamb) and so starts his mischievous adventures.

The play was directed by Mrs Holder, Miss Lane, Miss Mather and music by Mr Hocking, and it featured many talented actors such as Ryan Williams and Ellie Taylor. The costumes were appropriate to the time period and looked fantastic. There was a great use of lighting which signalled the change of time, giving the speedy background team time to change the set. One of the most outstanding performers, in our opinion, was Frankie Golding while playing Mr Sowerberry as he and co-star Chloe-Amber Cash sang „It‟s Your Funeral‟.

One of the most memorable songs was „Consider Yourself‟ performed by Manny Cox and the rest of Fagin‟s gang. The group worked well together to draw in the audience and demonstrate the skills of the students.

In our opinion, Oliver! has always been a family favourite and this was just like any other performance; amazing. The dances were excellent and they were all in time with each other. The performances were just as good. Overall, we think it was a truly great performance and if they were to ever do Oliver! again, we know to definitely recommend it to others.

Sports News Report by Mr Littlechild

Year 9 Girls Netball The year 9 girls performed exceptionally well, once again representing South West Dorset at the County Netball tournament at Queen Elizabeth School, Wimborne. In the qualifying round at Budmouth they demonstrated some high pace netball putting both Hardyes and eventual winners Woodroffe under sustained pressure. Ellie Wellman performed particularly well in the GS position and her consistent goal scoring kept Colfox in contention.

The County Tournament is always a very competitive contest and the standard of teams this year was particularly high. Some of the netball on show was exhilarating and reflective of teams that train all year just to reach the Finals. Colfox were not overawed by the occasion and continued to play their slick passing game, but with Brooke Luxton and Bronwyn Wright having to mark 6ft tall shooters in every game, Colfox struggled to stop the other teams scoring. Despite this, they stayed focused with captain Olivia Willmore leading by example and maintaining a high level of competitiveness throughout. This was a good team performance and an excellent experience to build on in the future: Team: Ellie Wellman, Hannah Bowell, Emily Hen-dry, Olivia Willmore, Sophie Wilson, Bronwyn Wright, Brooke Luxton, Poppy Legg-Bagg

Rugby During the month of November the area tournaments are held at Dorchester Rugby Club. Colfox always send out teams to represent each year group, and this year was no different. Year 7: On a wet and windy day the Year 7 rugby team put in an admirable performance against the other schools in the tournament. Over the 5 matches played we were extremely competitive against every team and we showed some glimpses of good play and determination in every game. Although the team did not manage to qualify from the group they can be pleased with the fact they managed to win some games, and were only narrowly defeated in the others. Year 8: The Year 8 tournament was held on the same day as the Year 7 meaning this was also a wet and windy day! Overall the team performed exceptionally well, never giving up and pushing themselves through-out every game. Although we did not manage to win a game, our defence was spectacular and we only lost

by a small score in each game. The tackling and aggression from every player was really good to see and they can take a lot away from the tournament.

Year 9: The team turned up with a number of players missing through injury and illness, and we had also been placed in to an extremely tough group. Despite this, and the fact we had to call in 3 players on the day, they have every reason to be proud of their performance. Not once did they give up in any game, and the level of tackling against some really big and quick players was excellent. .

Year 10: The team turned up on the day of their tournament after half of them had been playing in a county cup football match 30 minutes earlier! Despite that there were a number of spirited performances across the pitch with all the players showing some good level of skill and determination during the games. The team were able to compete effectively in a number of games against some strong opposition, and despite not getting through to the semi-finals they can be pleased with the way they played.

Cricket Indoor Competition

The Yr10 cricket team took part in the indoor cricket competition for West Dorset on Friday 27th November. Indoor cricket is a fast paced game where everyone has to bowl and runs are scored for hitting the ball off the

walls and running between the wickets. During the course of the afternoon Colfox remained unbeaten and put in some dominating performances against the other school. There was some good bowling by Luke Robertson and Tom Hughes while George Wyrill performed really well with bat. As a result of us staying unbeaten we managed to win the tournament and were put through to the county finals. Unfortunately due to and 5 of the players going on the ski trip we were not able to go over, however we can take pleasure in the fact we are the West Dorset champions!

Sports Leadership Report by Mrs Fairley The annual quicksticks hockey festival introduced younger students, in year 3 and 4, to hockey taster activities and was excellently lead by our hockey club students in years 7-10 this term. Year 9 leaders hosted the years1 and 2 multiskills festivals, organising activities for over 200 KS1 students, and netball club students in years 8 and 9 officiated at the area High 5 primary netball tournament. Officials for the area U15 volleyball tournament, hosted here at The Sir John Colfox Academy, came from students in years 8-11.

Also this half term, sports ambassadors have been out to visits at Powerstock School where they have been involved in leading sessions with students in reception up to year 6 and helping with after-school clubs. This has been a great opportunity to further develop their leadership skills and all have enjoyed the experience.

The commitment and enthusiasm of leaders continues to be much appreciated in the wider community.

Colfox Dominate at Cross Country

Area finals Report by Andy David

The Sir John Colfox Academy played host to the third and final Area Cross Country League race and it turned out to be a great day for our teams

The Year 7 boys team has been in outstanding form so far this season and they ended up winning the league

winning all three races. In the final race we finished

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th which is just incredible. In the individual rankings Mannie Wellman and Jake

Childs shared 3rd place, Tom Kilcoyne 2nd place and the sensational Finley Cauldwell 1st place after

winning every race.

The Year 7 girls have got better and better with each

race and the team ended up finishing 4th place overall after starting in 6th place after race 1. May

Cornwell has been the stand out performer and deserved her third place position in the overall

individual rankings.

The junior girls are a strong team and have, just like

last year, gone through the league series undefeated.

Dulice Gatehouse was third in the individual

rankings with Olivia Willmore finishing in 2nd place.

The junior boys have also had a great start, winning

all three races and having six in the top ten in the final race. Nat Wormleighton was the 3rd place

individual with Manny Cox securing 2nd place.

The Inter Boys have the strongest squad we have

ever had and the depth of talent is quite incredible. After reaching the Southern England final we always

expected them to do well in the area league and they did not disappoint going through undefeated. In the

final race we witnessed an incredible sprint finish

between Tom Crabtree and Dan Elliott for 1st and 2nd place with Tom just edging out Dan.

Probably the real surprise was the inter girls who also

went through all three races undefeated and Olivia

Symes finished 2nd overall and Sydney March 3rd.

The Sir John Colfox Academy would like to thank the Colfox Trust for allowing us to race and train on their

land and to AP Chant for sponsoring the Area Cross Country League.

Y7 Residential Hooke Court

The year 7‟s had another fantastic time on their 2 day residential at Hooke Court. They took part in a variety of team building activities including building dens and rafts. In the evening they took part in a variety show that was won by H7RP the Hinomaru tutor group with a great lip-sync performance. On the second day all the skills they had learnt were put to the test and the final challenge to cross the moat was won by A7MT the Adler tutor group.
