Please note that the school will be closed on

Thursday 23 June 2016 for the EU

Referendum. School will be open on Friday 24

June 2016.

Congratulations to the children in P6 and P7

for their production of The Rocky Monster

Show. The children have received many

positive comments about the show and their

performances. Thank you to the staff

involved in bringing this together and special

thanks to the many parents who helped with

costume and make up. Your involvement was

hugely appreciated.

FUNDRAISING

We were also very proud this week of Primary 6 as they showed

themselves to be excellent Ambassadors for the school when they ran

their business stalls at the Gyle and the Virgin Money Lounge. As part

of the Make £5 Grow Challenge, each child was ‘loaned’ £5 by Virgin

Money to create and deliver a business. The three businesses, Cake

Bakers, Jungle Rings and Santeez, together made a profit of £490.01.

This year P3 also took part in the initiative. They organised Christmas

crafts and an Easter Egg raffle which raised £300.

P5 took part in the £1 Challenge, individually coming up with ideas to

grow their pounds and deciding as a group how to spend or invest the

money. P5 chose to spend their money on a trip and use some to invest

in a developing business via Lend a Hand as well as a donation to Tong

Len.

Over the course of this session we have supported a range of charities

through donations of goods as well as fundraising: Edinburgh Direct

Aid, Mercy Corp, Sciaf, Unicef, Samaritan’s Purse shoe box presents

and Tong Len. Children have also used some of the profit from their

Make £5 grow to invest in business in other countries through the

organisation Lend with Care. Dragon’s Den here we come.

Thank you to our families for being generous in so many ways – buying

raffle tickets; donating items for the container shipment, Christmas

hampers etc.

Overall we have raised approximately £1887.38 for all of our

charitable links.

SPORTS

Congratulations again

to the P6 and P7

athletes who formed

part of the joint

Interscholastics

Sports team and

achieved a fantastic

result winning both

the girls trophy and

the overall trophy.

More sporting success was achieved by the football team who took part

in the Clermiston & Drumbrae Gala, bringing the winners’ shield back to

school with them. Well done.

Our Cross Country team took part in the Cross Country heats at

Saughton and the finals at Inverleith and achieved some very good

results.

We also had great representation at the recent Edinburgh Marathon

Festival weekend.

Thank you must go to Mrs Prentice for her commitment to the Cross

Country club and to Mrs Watt, a dedicated helper.

ST AUGUSTINE’S HIGH SCHOOL

This session pupils from P5 to P7 have taken part in a range of

transition activities. We were also pleased to welcome S6 pupils as

guides for our Open Morning in November. It is fantastic to see how

well they have done and hear about their plans for the future.

Today’s Science: Tomorrow’s Engineers – Teams of pupils took part in

this competition at St Augustine’s. Pupils competed against other local

primary schools, presenting their work to judges from industry and the

Universities. Teams had been developing solutions to improving

accessibility for people with disabilities. Our pupils did extremely well

Fraser Watt, Freddie Owens and Liam Haughian winning a first place

and Ciara Boyton and Grace McGinley coming second. As well as taking

1st and 2nd place, many pupils were highly commended for their designs.

The judges commented on the level of organisation and planning, and

the quality of the presentations.

P5 Club Golf – P5 took part in an area golf tournament at St

Augustine’s.

a 4 week block as part of their transition year.

and took part in art, music and dance activities before celebrating Mass

with their new friends.

PARENT COUNCIL

The Parent Council have been very active this year organising a range of

social and fundraising events from Discos to Quiz Nights. A fantastic

amount has been raised and has been used to buy a new Smartboard,

lots of new reading books, to support our new reading and phonics

programme as well as. The Parent Council have also played an important

role in the planning and design process for the new classroom block and

the multi-sports pitch. We are always keen to have more ideas and

involvement so please come along to our first meeting next session and

meet new people, share your ideas and explore how you can become

involved.

NEXT SESSION

We are off to a busy start in August with our school’s 50th Anniversary

celebrations. More information will follow soon but we plan to start the

year with a block of learning relating to our Anniversary e.g. local

history, the 60s, changes through the decades etc.

If you are a past pupil and would like to become involved, perhaps

sharing your own memories with current pupils, please let us know. We

will hold a celebration event and this is still to be finalised.

We will also celebrate an anniversary Mass, celebrated by Archbishop

Leo Cushley on 9 September in the school. All families will be invited.

Father Piotr and Father James have played a significant role in the

school this year working with all classes and helping us to prepare the

children for Sacraments. We value their partnership enormously.

Other early activities planned include:
