OPEN RUGBY SEASON

The 1st XV rugby season is the final time where the

matric boys will play for their school. Some of them may continue to play club rugby and some varsity

rugby, but for others this will be the last time they will put on a pair of rugby boots! Regardless of what the

boys’ future plans may be, every 1st XV player feels

proud and privileged to play in the “Reds” jersey and is determined to leave a legacy with the boys who aren’t

in matric and for the next team to follow.

The season started with trials which were held over a period of two weeks. With plenty of talent, choosing a

first team was not an easy task for the coaches. We

were lucky enough to have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and even a 4th team which shows the level of ability and commitment

from our players. A weekend training session followed where the boys were put through their paces both

technique and fitness wise.

Our season started off with a very brief tour down to

Clifton in Kwa-Zulu Natal. It was literally an “in and out” tour with one game being played and FHS losing

41-5. They had some work to do. The next weekend

the North Area trials were held at Fourways High and sadly they were beaten by a very impressive Trinity

House side. They consoled themselves with the fact that the Trinity team have been playing together since

primary school! However, as a 1st XV team, this was not a good enough excuse.

CBC Boksburg was their first league game and the boys were ready to put some points on the log and achieve

their first home victory. The team came out firing! Set

moves worked, determination was evident and at the end of the game Fourways came away with a 44-7 win.

A great start to the league games!

The April school holidays were upon us and the 1st XV

squad headed down to Port Shepstone, KZN for the Sportweni rugby festival. The team had a very

successful tour winning all three of their games. The team had found their heartbeat and were keen to get

back to business with regards to their league fixtures.

Their next two matches were friendly encounters, not

counting towards the league but providing good game time and experience. They narrowly lost against

Sutherland, however, they came back with an tight 18-10 win over Potchefstroom Boys at home. Northcliff

was their next league game. They are always a tough

side to play, with strong rivalry, but Northcliff were stronger than Fourways’ 1st XV on the day who left the

field defeated! The boys needed to dig deep, focus more on their game plan and bring the desire and

belief that they could and would be victorious. Bring on

Heronbridge College!

Wednesday afternoon at FHS, the boys were ready and

it was obvious in their body language. After the 1st XV

of 2016 narrowly lost to Heronbridge on their home ground, the boys were ready to show them that at

home they weren’t a force to be reckoned with. They played with pure heart and willpower to push towards

the try line and in the end we won 41-21. 2nd league game victory! Then the traditional rivals of Bryanston,

the big derby day, however not a league match. Once

again the boys were ready and wanted to prove that FHS has what it takes – outwit, outplay and outlast!

And they did just that...they beat Bryanston 33-12.

With only two league games left and a place in the

league final up for grabs, our 1st XV boys are motivated and working hard to see the season finish victoriously.

The team spirit is high and the boys are all encouraging each other to be the best that they can

be. An anonymous quote says “All the talent in the world won’t take you anywhere without your

teammates.”

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country season came to an end this week and it has been a year of mixed results for our team. We had a large group of runners participating and the spirit was fantastic. And a successful team is not possible without great coaches – so a big thank you to Mrs Maritz, Mrs Mason-Rabe, Miss Winson, Mr De Wit and Marcel Viljoen, not to mention our very motivating and stand-up team captains, Caleb Johnston, Ivan Low, Elle Noel and Penny Masondo!

The season kicked off over the Easter weekend with a number of runners attending the sports festival at St Stithians. Grade eight junior girl, Nadya Stolarczy, gave us a taste of things to come with an awesome display of her running fitness. She was the first junior girl home both in the fun run, completed in the rain on the Thursday evening, as well as the relay event on the Saturday morning!

As the season progressed the numbers grew and the performances improved. A total of 659 runners from 23 different schools participated this year, and Fourways was represented by 8 junior girls, 13 senior girls, 14 junior boys and 18 senior boys.

After the six league meetings were completed, the junior girls proved to be the strongest group from our school by ending fourth on their log. The junior boys were sixth (their best performance being second), senior girls sixth as well (best performance fourth), and the senior boys, who had the toughest and largest age group, still came in fifth, and that after two top three performances through the season.

We are also very proud of our four runners who qualified for Northern District colours: Nadya Stolarczy , junior girls (9th at districts) Lungisa Masondo, junior boys (27th) Erin Haupt, senior girls, (9th) Nicholas van Zyl, senior boys (32nd) A big congratulations to our two ladies who both finished in the top 10 in their respective age groups with all three districts represented!

The season was wrapped up by an excursion by some run-ners to a trail run through the lion park. Yes that’s correct – the lion park! In addition to tiptoeing through the reserve they also had to brave the cold weather but once again our team proved how tough they are by completing the 8 km and 12km courses. Meanwhile Mrs Maritz and Mrs Mason-Rabe was not far behind and also represented Fourways at the event!

Well done to all our runners and all the best for the athletics season in the third team!
