WE’RE CASTING FOR LIVING WAY OF THE CROSS LOVE DRAMA?

WE NEED YOU!

Presenter: Sr. Tracey Dugas The Daughters of St. Paul

In a drama c way the Church puts a pause on our Lenten outlook in order to remind us – in case we have forgo en – of the reason for our Lenten observances. This happens on the fourth Sunday in Lent.          Tradi onally, this Sunday known as the Laetare Sunday has been a day of

celebra on within the austere period of Lent.  The word Laetare means "Rejoice, O Jerusalem!" as it appears in our Liturgy. Lent is not yet over. Our Lenten commitments, resolu ons, and observances must con nue, but, for the mean me, we must also rejoice over what we are doing and why we are doing it and what we hope to accomplish in this holy season.  The psalmist prayed: even though I walk through the valley of the shadow death, I shall fear no evil, for Thou art with me… (Ps 23)  The peniten al mood of the season of Lent is meant to prepare us for a fi ng celebra on of the Great Solemnity of Easter. Our Lenten observances are not mere formali es. The Church intended it to be life-changing and soul-renewing for all of us.  And the assurance that the rigorous penances, sacrifices, prayers, and almsgiving performed this season will lead us to a worthy celebra on of the Resurrec on of Christ calls for a interjec on of joy amidst our penitence.  The Preface of today’s Mass puts this so well: “By the mystery of the Incarna on, he has led the

human race that walked in darkness into the radiance of faith and has brought those in slavery to ancient sin through the waters of regenera on to make them your adopted children.”   Through the outward signs of flowers and colorful vestments, the Church wants to make manifest the reality of laetare (joy/rejoicing) among her members, but we, the members, in turn, must let this joy radiate. People around us should be able to no ce our rejoicing this week and probably beyond this week.  We rejoice because we have been buried with Christ in the waters of bap sm: cleansed, purified of original sin. It was a complete regenera on that makes us a new people; the adopted daughters and sons of God. We rejoice because by the merit of the passion, crucifixion, death, and resurrec on of Christ, our salva on is won for us. We rejoice, because God the Creator did not only allow us to share in His crea ng works, but He also gave us the privilege of par cipa ng in the saving work of His Son.  We rejoice, because Christ is the Light of the world, the Light that dispels the darkness of sin and death, and our associa on with Him not only illumines us but makes us become the light to others, especially to those who are on the margins  So as we make this Lenten journey with the Church, let us heed her invita on to rejoice! But more so, let us make this joy felt by others around us in our families, in the community, in our work places, and schools. When we inten onally share this joy and are ready to explain to those who ask why we are rejoicing, then the season will not be dry for us. It will no longer be boring.  But instead, it will become a  me of reinvigora on.
