REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL

In the early church, before Jesus was depicted as

suffering and dying on the cross, he was depicted as

“the Good Shepherd.” This image was central to early

Christina identity. We see paintings and even statues of

Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The cross seems to have

been too painful or too inappropriate to be an effective

way to portray Jesus. The Good Shepherd conveyed the

Christian message much more clearly. Today we

celebrate “Good Shepherd” Sunday as we read this

famous gospel story from John. We are no longer in the

realm of resurrection appearance stories, but now we

have entered the world of Jesus’ “I AM” parabolic

discourse. In John, Jesus doesn’t preach in parables,

“The kingdom of God is like a shepherd, a gate, a

vineyard, etc.” Instead, we hear Jesus say, “I AM the

good shepherd,” or in another passage, “I AM the

gate,” or I AM the vine,” etc. Some scholars call this an

“I AM Christology of the Fourth Gospel because it is

used so frequently here, as opposed to the Synoptics. It

is true that the Gospel of John has an intense emphasis

on the person of Jesus, reflected in a high Christology.

The joke is that if you ask Jesus in the Gospel of John

how he’s doing, he’ll take two chapters to say he and

the Father are just fine. The image of a shepherd is

certainly one rooted in antiquity. There are not as many

shepherds today as there were then. And the site of a

shepherd was much more common in that culture that it

is today. Yet, even though most of us probably do not

know any shepherds, or even seen any recently, we are

all familiar with the image. Even Pope Frances spoke

about shepherds shortly after he became pope. He

spoke about how he wanted priests to have “the smell

of the sheep” on them. This kind of graphic, even

smelly, analogy offended some people. One person

responded, “That sounds gross! Did he actually say

that?” But it is precisely the image Francis meant to

convey about whom he wanted as priests, and the

language stems from this gospel story about Jesus

himself being the Good Shepherd. Interestingly, Jesus

makes a distinction in this discourse about himself as

the “good shepherd” and a “hired man” who works for

money. The latter has no really concern for the sheep.

He is in it only for the pay. Jesus, on the other hand,

loves the sheep and has concern for them. He lays

down his life for the sheep. The hired hand will run

away at the first sign of danger. The result of his

running away is that the sheep are scattered. As we

consider this in our own time we can see the many

Christians, many of us, who have been scattered. As we

listen for the voice of the Good Shepherd and come to

him, we will be reunited. Living Liturgy—year B

IN SYMPATHY Please remember in your prayers + Jose Ramirez Duran, father

of Rosa Ibarra. Remember, Lord, those who have died and have

gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May these, and all

who sleep in Christ, find in Your presence light, happiness and

peace.

SECOND COLLECTION

Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal.

Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are

considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund

the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your

support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses.

Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal by

using the attached envelope.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Applications for the Matthew A. Wagner Memorial Scholarship as

well as scholarships awarded by St. Patrick Knights of Columbus

are available at the Parish Office or from Frances Parker.

Scholarships will be awarded to current graduating seniors who

are members of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Canby. They are

for post -secondary education. Deadline to return applications will

be May 14th, 2018 to the Parish Office.

DONNA CORI GIBSON CONCERT

The Knights of Columbus would like to thank all the volunteers

that made the concert, spiritually, socially, and financially a huge

success. Grand Knight Dave Bernklau stated, “Donna gave us a

prayerful time together and the people responded well during the

Chaplet.” She was an inspiration to many with high hopes that we

will grow in our faith as a Parish. A special thank-you to the

Frank Batteliga family for preparing a fabulous Spaghetti and

Meatball dinner for more than 200 guests. Duane Kloser and Paul

Crawford, Chairmen for the event

BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH

You are invited to participate in a guided tour of Mount Angel Abbey on

Saturday, May 19th. One of the Abbey Monks will provide a personalized

narration of the history of the Abbey grounds and buildings. Sponsored by

the Knights of Columbus, everyone is welcome to join us Saturday

afternoon. We will be greeted by a Monk at the entrance to the Abbey

church at 10:45 am. We will join in the noon prayers following the tour.

The prayers last about 15 minutes. After prayers led by the Monks, we will

have a chance as a group to pray for religious vocations and for families that

they may grow in the grace of our Lord. For those interested there will be an

opportunity to visit the gift shop before returning to St. Patrick’s.

Meet at St. Patrick’s church at 9:45 am to car pool to the abbey, or you

have the option to drive to the abbey on your own. The Abbey has requested

we give them an approximate number of people attending, so please call

John Fontana at 503-266-2788 and leave a message, or email him at:

[email protected], if you plan to attend.

YOUR SUNDAY CONTRIBUTIONS

HOLY LAND—OLIVE WOOD CRAFTS

We welcome back from the Holy Land (Bethlehem & Jerusalem) John Qumsiyeh

who will be selling religious articles after all the Masses the weekend of May 5/6th.

This helps support the Catholic Christian minorities in Bethlehem. As a tradition,

many of the Catholic families in the Holy Land work in small workshops to produce

religious articles from olive wood. These articles represent the Christian art of the

Holy Land. In the past, they used to sell their artwork to pilgrims who visit the Holy

Land. However, these days they are facing an economic hardship as very few

tourists visit the Holy Land due to security issues. Sales will be used to help

support the Catholics in the Holy Land. Please visit their tables after the Masses

which will be located in the vestibule of the church.

LEAVE A LEGACY

One final way to demonstrate your

belief in a generous God is to share

your Catholic values in your obituary.

Consider asking friends and family

members to send memorial donations to

the church instead of sending flowers.

To accomplish this, instruct your

family to place “Remembrances to St.

Patrick’s Catholic Church” or “in lieu

of flowers, please donate to St.

Patrick’s,” as the last line in your

obituary.
