Universities have to gain recognition through increasing capacities of teaching and research.Endeavors of the educational institutes are also characterized by close links amongpedagogue, learning, research and collaboration of researchers. Engaging students inresearch is essential, not only because it promotes their critical and creative thinking skills,it also encourages them to develop research based-concepts and enables them to participatein innovation of products and national productivity.

Organizing academic conferences by utilizing university’s platform is always productive andrewarding. Following the tradition of academic excellence and competence, BUITEMS, playingits seminal role, hosted an international conference, on Emerging Trends in Managementand Economics, fulfilling its responsibility to address the challenges faced by the nation whichis passing through a transitional phase to complement the global advancements.

In line with its mission and philosophy, BUITEMS prepares human resource to serve the

nation and in recognition of the dedicated hard work of the students, it held its 9th consecutiveconvocation with fervor and regalia. Wearing the traditional academic cap, gown and walkingup the stage is the dream of every student and a defining moment in life. We wish the pass-outgraduates success.

BUITEMS organized its 1st International Conference onEmerging Issues in Management and Economics(ICEIME) on November 01-02, 2013 at Quetta SerenaHotel. Many renowned national and internationalscholars in the fields of Management and Economicspresented their papers in the conference. The ChiefGuest for the opening ceremony was ChancellorBUITEMS, Governor Balochistan Mr. Mohammad KhanAchakzai who asserted that there are many untappedopportunities present in our country but the need of thehour is to explore and utilize these for the benefit andwell-being of our people. The conference had substantial representation from international arenaincluding presenters from Germany, Australia and US who participated vigorously in theconference. The conference was attended by a huge number of audience from differentuniversities across the country. A vast array of papers were presented in the conference onvarying themes like Human Resource Management, SMEs Management, Total QualityManagement, Organizational Behavior, Strategic Management, Corporate

Social Responsibility, Change Management, SustainableDevelopment, Labor and Population Management,

Energy Economics, Agricultural Economics,Industrial Economics and the like. The

conference had the pleasure of havingtwo of the very renowned internationalscholars Prof. Dr. Joachim vonBraun and Dr. Retha Wiesner as keynote speakers. Prof. Dr. Joachim vonBraunis is the Director of the Center for

Development Research (ZEF) andProfessor for Economic and Technological

Change at University of Bonn, Germany and Dr.Retha Wiesner is Associate Professor of Human Resource Management

and Organizational Behavior in the School of Management and Marketing atthe University of Southern Queensland. For the closing ceremony,

Chief Secretary Balochistan, Mr. Babar Yaqub Fateh Mohammad wasinvited who distributed certificates and shields among the participantsand organizers of the conference. He highly appreciated the effortsof Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, Ahmed Farooq Bazai and the facultymembers of Management Sciences for holding such learningevents in a province like Balochistan marred with manifoldeconomic, sectarian and domestic problems. Three days Cascading Workshop on“Ensuring Training Effectiveness” was heldat Takatu Campus Auditorium, BUITEMS, incollaboration with the Higher EducationCommission. Ms. Imrana Niaz coordinatedthe training workshop. It was scheduled fromOctober 1-3, 2013 where thirty facultymembers attended the workshop. TheWorkshop commenced with the recitationfrom the Holy Quran followed by welcomenote and address by Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghani. Each day was divided in three sessions wheredifferent Modules were presented by Resource Persons, who developed and appreciated the

latent skills of faculty by their lucrativeModules, containing HRD and Organizationwith respect to Training Process, AdultLearning Theories & Modules, TrainingDesign, Use of ICT in Teaching & Learningand Result Based Management, Monitoring& Evaluation. The closing ceremony anddistribution of certificates took place at GreenHall, along with motivational remarks andappreciation of the organizers by the chiefguest Vice Chancellor BUITEMS AhmedFarooq Bazai.

Pakistan’s first ever Wilderness BasedYouth Leadership Conference MARKHOR-2013 was held by Youth Impact fromOctober 2-6, 2013 at Mushkpuri Top at theheight of 9240 Feet (Nathia Gali). The conference brought100 high potential youth of Pakistan together and inculcateda spirit of social leadership amongst them. The conferenceoffered a unique opportunity experience, leadership learningand outdoor adventures. During the four days atMARKHOR, the delegates spent most of the time inactivities, like outdoors surviving, trekking, problem solvingand learning. Following students (Student Affairs Members)participated from BUITEMS: Syed Izatullah BS(EE), AliZainul Abidin BS(BA), Abdul Bari BS(BA), Sohail LalBS(BA), Jahanzaib Samejo (MBA), Wajahat RehmanBS(BA). Syed Izatullah BS (EE) was awarded the BestDelegate of the Conference as a result of his team work,high potential, performance, spirit and enthusiasm. In honorof his achievement, Syed Izatullah, was invited as a chiefguest at MARKHOR-2014, International Wilderness BasedYouth Leadership Conference which will be held in Turkeythis year.

Dr. Shahbaz Mushtaq, Director Research/WaterResource Economist, Australian Centre forSustainable Catchments (ACSC), Towoomba,

Queensland Australia, visited BUITEMS on October3rd, 2013. During his visit, Dr. Shahbaz met with the Vice Chancellor of BUITEMS. On thisoccasion Dr. M.A.K Malghani, Dr. Syed Muhammad Khair, Dean FABS and Dr. Abdul Raziq,Dean, FMS were also present.

The Vice Chancellor, BUITEMS Ahmad Farooq Bazai briefed the guest about the progressand growth of BUITEMS during the last ten years. He also briefed about the role that BUITEMShas been playing for the social uplift of the province. The Vice Chancellor specially mentionedthe efforts made so far about the capacity building of BUITEMS faculty. He also mentionedthat the addition of a number of PhD’s to BUITEMS faculty who have re-joined after completingtheir higher studies from countries such as USA, Germany, China, UK, and Australia hasstrengthened the BUITEMS faculty. Dr. Shahbaz praised the progress made by BUITEMS ina short period of only 10 years under the dynamic leadership of Ahmad Farooq Bazai withthe support of his team. Dr. Shahbaz briefed the participants of the meeting about the researchwork currently undertaken at ACSC, USQ, and Australia. He stressed the needfor undertaking research on agriculture related issues in general and watersector in particular in Balochistan, which is comparatively a remote andunderdeveloped province of Pakistan. He also pointed out the possibleresearch areas such as, water management and governance, povertyalleviation through raising crop productivity, and sustainable agricultureand the importance of submitting projects to get funding frominternational donors such as ACIAR, FAO, World Bank for such projectsin the province. He also offered all possible help for such projects andthe preparation of concept papers related to Balochistan through mutualcooperation and coordination between BUITEMS and ACSC, Australia.In the end he also extended invitation to the Vice Chancellor BUITEMSto visit ACSC, USQ Australia.

The closing ceremony ofFICT “Fall Fun 2013”with the motto, “funraising for fund raising”was held on October 3rd, 2013 at Green hall. The chief guest of theceremony was honorable Vice Chancellor Ahmed Farooq Bazaiaccompanied by Dr. M.A.K. Malghani and the Dean FICT Dr. Faisal Khan.

Students and faculty members from FICT and other faculties attended theevent. The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Adil

Siddique, Lecturer Computer Engineering. The Dean FICT presented thecheque on behalf of FICT to the Vice

Chancellor. The lottery prizes and certificateswere distributed among the volunteers andstudents.

The Vice Chancellor and Dean FICT addressedthe audience. A short video clip of the entire eventwas shown to the spectators. It was a splendidceremony indeed appreciated by all the BUITEMSfamily.

BUITEMS Diversity Council of Student Affairs organized“Clean BUITEMS Week-2013” from September 30 to

October 6, 2013. During the week awareness was createdamong the students, staff and faculty members regarding environmental sustainability throughvarious activities like seminars andvisits of the departments and faculties.On this occasion BUITEMS City andTakatu Campuses were decorated withflags, banners and flyers withmagnificent slogans regardingenvironmental sustainability. Ms. AnilaAli, Lecturer Psychology waschairperson of the organizing committeeof the event while team membersincluded Sameen Khan (EventCoordinator) Ms. Asma Yousafzai, Mr.Imran Khan, Ms. Sahar Raza, Mr. SyedQudratullah and Mr. Syed ShahMohammad. Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghani,Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nawaz, Mr. JamalMustafa (Registrar BUITEMS) Mr.Manzoor Hussain (Additional Registrar Academics & HR) and Mr. Abdul Qadeem Kakar(Additional Registrar Coordination & Admin) were judges of the event. Faculty of ManagementSciences remained on the top in the competition. Faculty of Information & CommunicationTechnology got 2nd position, while Faculty of Arts & Basic Sciences stood 3rd in the competition.

BUITEMS and SUPARCO organizedthe “World Space Week” event fromOctober 9th to 10th 2013 at Takatu

Campus, BUITEMS. The theme of theevent was “Exploring Mars, DiscoveringEarth” and the purpose was to createawareness regarding space. The chiefguest, Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, AhmedFarooq Bazai along with SUPARCO Karachioffice Director, Mr. Zafar Iqbal and Mr. Khalid KhanYousafzai, Director Quetta office, inaugurated the event.Students from different schools of Quetta cityparticipated in this event. Various activities includingWater Rocket Competition, Declamation Contest, QuizCompetition and Astronomy Night were held. Mr. Zafar

Iqbal briefed the students & guests about SUPARCO and theimportance of World Space Week. He emphasized BUITEMScontribution in the province, and appreciated its efforts in thefield of Engineering & Information Technology. Students,teachers, media personnel and other officials highlighted therelationship between BUITEMS and SUPARCO, and

A training workshop was organized byBUITEMS Executive Education Center(BEEC) on “Gender Based Violenceand Social Protection” with thecollaboration of UNDP-RAHA from 9th to 11th October, 2013 at BUITEMS, City Campus.Workshop started with the recitation of some verses from the Holy Quran, and a welcomenote was given to the participants by Mr. Syed Qudratullah, Manager Training. The proceedingsession was conducted by Ms. Naureen Lehri, the master trainer ofworkshop, with detailed introduction of participants. After introductorysession the participants were briefed about the basic objectives ofthe training and the importance of the workshop in theirprofessional and social lives. The basic aim was to increaseparticipants’ knowledge & understanding of gender-basedviolence, discussing the role of society & individuals inreducing gender disparities and to increase social protection.The proceeding session was on “Understanding Gender”.The participants were introduced to the concepts related togender like “Gender”, “Sex” and “Social Construction ofGender”. 2nd day session was “Gender Based Violence”. because of the unequal power relations between them. Through presentations it wasexplained that gender violence occurs in families and general community, but is sometimesalso perpetuated by the policies or the actions of the police, military or immigration authorities.The 3rd day covered the legal aspects of gender based violence, laws associated with it andremedial measures. In the last session, personal reflections of the participants were taken inwriting. The participants also provided feedback during the discussion which was formed forthe possible individual contribution towards the gender based violence at their personalcapacity. Participants pledged to take required steps for the conciliation of such violent trends.Last session was followed by the certificate distribution ceremony. At the closing ceremonythe chief guest Mr. Anwar Saleem Kasi from RAHA-UNDP and Dr. Abdul Raziq, DeanManagement Sciences BUITEMS distributed the certificates among the participants.

The 16th meeting of the Advanced Studies &Research Board (ASRB) of BUITEMS was heldon 28th October, 2013 under the chairmanship

of Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, Ahmed FarooqBazai. Agenda items related to academicmatters of graduate students / scholars werepresented before the house for deliberationsand consideration. The main discussionpoints included: Confirmation of the minutesof 15th meeting of Advanced Studies &Research Board (ASRB); consideration ofsynopsis/research proposals, panel ofexternal examiners, evaluation reports of theexternal examiners; and restoration /extension / cancellation related matters ofvarious MS / PhD scholars of BUITEMS. Theboard made deliberations on each agendaitem and recorded decisions accordingly.

An Annual Farewell Partywas organized by thestudents of Departments of Biotechnology &Informatics and Microbiology (8th semester) underthe supervision of Ms. Asma Yousafzai and Mr.Muhammad Waseem Khan on 31st October,2013 in Arfa Karim Randhawa Expo Center.Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghani was the chief guest

of the event.

The Dean Faculty of Life Sciences & InformaticsDr. Jamil Ahmad expressed best wishes for the

passing out students of the session. The partydepicted a sense of entertainment and joy at the same time. Thechief guest during his speech praised the final semester studentsand wished them the best for their future and their families.Towards the end, a farewell song was dedicated to the passingout students.

The 34th meeting of Faculty Development ReviewCommittee (FDRC) was held on November 06,2013 in the Conference Room, Vice ChancellorSecretariat Takatu Campus. The meeting startedwith recitation of verses from Holy Quran. The Director HRD presented the agenda

items before the committee.The committee discussedthe agenda and maderecommendations.

In this meeting studyleave cases, study leaveextensions, status ofscholars doing their MS/PhD studies at differentnational and Internationaluniversities, scholars who havecompleted their MS/ PhD studies and rejoineduniversity and cases of scholars proceeded forhigher studies were discussed.

C e n t r eorganized an event for the well-being of BUITEMS family. MedicalCentre initiated blood group camp on 7th November, 2013 whichwas inaugurated by Vice Chancellor. This camp wasorganized by staff members of BUITEMS Medical Centreincluding Dr. Srichand and Dr. Nafeesa Jamil under thesupervision of Mr. Abdul Qadeem Kakar (AdditionalRegistrar Coordination & Admin). The main lab technicianwas M. Iftikhar who in collaboration with Haji Mohammad,Ayub Kasi and M. Sharif. M Sharif performed the additionaltask of maintenance of data recording. This activity wentconcurrently at both the campuses.One of the purposes of

arranging thisb l o o dgroup campwas to collect details of blood groupsavailable within BUITEMS and tohandle any emergency situation withefficiency. The future plan is to developBUITEMS blood bank, so it was thefirst step towards this objective.

Approximately 2500 students andmore than 300 staff membersparticipated in the camp.

BUITEMS Student Affairs hasalways been on front toenhance the educationalexperiences of students and help them out in studies and personal development. To pursuethe same goal, BUITEMS Student Affairs, Diversity Council in collaboration with CareerServices Office organized a workshopon “Personality Grooming andLeadership Skills” on November 08,2013 in Green Seminar Hall, BUITEMS.The purpose of the workshop was toencourage and motivate all thosestudents who face difficulties in theirstudies and other daily endeavors.

Ahmed Farooq Bazai, Vice ChancellorBUITEMS was the Chief Guest of theevent. Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghani, Prof.Dr. Mohammad Nawaz, & StudentAffairs Coordinator were also presenton the occasion. Ms. Fatima Ali,Assistant Commissioner, Federal Boardof Revenue & a BUITEMS Alumnuspresented her success story.

“Understanding corruption” is the firststep in fighting corruption. Corruption hasplagued Pakistan from the very moment

it came into existence. There are differentforms of corruption such as moral, political andfinancial. To fight corruption we need to educateour youth and develop their confidence to say noto corruption. In the same context NationalAccountability Bureau (NAB) Quetta, held a paintingcompetition titled as “say no to corruption” on 9thNovember 2013 at NAB Head Quarters. Thestudents from the department of Fine Artsparticipated in this competition enthusiastically.Second prize was won by Naseeb-Ullah from 5thsemester, department of Fine Arts. His paintingconveyed a strong message that corruption is theabuse of entrusted power for private gain. We hopethat all our students continue to make us proud.

Football (Students)On 15th November 2013final Match was playedbetween BS (Arch) vs. BS (P&G). The Teamof BS (Arch) won the tournament by 1-0 Goal.

Cricket (Faculty and Admin)On 15th November 2013 final Match wasplayed between Administration and Facultyof Engineering. The Team of Administrationwon the tournament by 65 Runs.

A three weeks program startingfrom 11th November 2013 to29thNovember 2013 was funded

by AusAID through its AustralianLeadership Award (ALA) and hosted bythe University of Southern Queensland.The purpose of this training was to createawareness about improving the successratio of women entrepreneurs and SMEleaders/managers in Pakistan. Theprogram was specially aimed at womenin leadership roles having an impact onwomen entrepreneurial development,capacity building, knowledge transfer andskill building. In this program, 18 womenwere selected from different professionalbackgrounds from all over Pakistanincluding Balochistan University ofInformation Technology, Engineering andManagement Sciences, Sardar Bahadur

Khan Women University, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Women Development DepartmentBalochistan and Women Chamber of Commerce Balochistan. The training program comprised ofdifferent topics related to field of entrepreneurship. The program was conducted in different cities ofAustralia, including site visits, lectures and case studies.

University of Southern Queensland also arranged dinners with The High Commission ofPakistan, Mr. Abdul Malik Abdullah at Sydney and a Dinner with the Vice Chancellor ofUniversity of Queensland Professor Jan Thomas at Toowoomba Campus. This trainingsuccessfully ended on 30 November 2013. The participants were eager to share theknowledge and experiences gained with the colleagues back in Pakistan. The resultingmultiplier effect will definitely have a positive impact on the economy by encouraging thefemale entrepreneurs to earn a living for themselves and support their families in a positiveway. The new sports complex aims to provide space for thesports persons in BUITEMS. The Department of FineArts has its own contribution for this sports Complex.The faculty of the department of Fine Artsmade a relief for the new sports complex tomake the building more attractive. Relief is asculptural technique made on the walls ofbuildings and a variety of smaller settingswhich is common throughout the world. Thesize of the relief is twenty by forty feet. It is thebiggest relief in Balochistan which is a greataccomplishment for the department of Fine

Arts of BUITEMS. The project wassupervised by Director Fine

Arts Mr. Kaleem Khan and Mr. Abdul Wahab was team leader. The studentsfrom Department of Fine Arts were also part of this team. The efforts werehighly appreciated by BUITEMS family. The relief was installed on 17thNovember, 2013. It took an entire week just to install the relief.

A five day course onPakistan Federalismand Decentralization

was held from November 22nd to 26th, 2013, at Hill View Hotel, F-7 Markaz Islamabad.Course was jointly organized by UnitedNations Development Program (UNDP) andthe Center for Civic Education Pakistan. Inthis course 20 young scholars all overPakistan participated through competitiveselection process. Mr. Abdul WadoodChairperson Department of Social Scienceswas selected to participate in the said course.The main objective for conducting this coursewas “to impart knowledge of federalism withrespect to its theoretical as well as practicalaspects”.

UNHCR arranged a campaign with an Open Forum for youth,under the theme "Demanding Implementation, ChallengingObstacles: End Violence against Women." The event was conducted in collaboration withBUITEMS. The open forum sought to increase awareness about women's rights among thestudents and faculty members. The event started on 27th November and ended on 12th

December 2013. A thematic painting competition was held by the UNHCR tospread awareness about gender based violence.

The students participated enthusiastically andstudents from BUITEMS won first, second andthird prizes. The event also included differentactivities such as theater performances,seminars and workshops. The teachersfrom the department of Fine Arts were the

judges of the event.

A three day session was conducted on'Agri-Business Program of Balochistan' withthe collaboration of Pakistan Agriculture

a n dCold Chain Development Project (PACCD) on 29th May2013. Third session of training which started on 26thNovember 2013 was organized by BUITEMS andPACCD to improve the entrepreneurial skills and basicknowledge of business and marketing tecnniquesamong the participants which increased understandingof market linkages & market development, and providedinformation regarding financial assistance and

investment. It was a three-dayactivity which ended on 28thNovember 2013. In the closingceremony Dean Faculty ofManagement Sciences wasthe Chief Guest, along withDirector UA&FA, ChairpersonDepartment of ManagementSciences and ChairmanDepartment of Economics.The chief guest in his speechelaborated the importance ofsuch activities and distributedcertificates and shields amongthe participants.

The Department of ManagementSciences organized a “ResearchWeek” training session for

students, administration andfaculty members. The session’s duration was a week-long (from 2nd to6th December 2013) and the modules covered were “A to Z of SPSS inResearch” and “Effective Research Proposal/Project/Thesis Writing”. Theparticipants received a training dossier, including a DVD of the SPSS v21software, related data files and tutorial slides. Complete information aboutthe training session was also available online on a dedicated website ofworkshop. Research as a subject of any discipline is a core course in BusinessProgram and it has been made an essential part of post-graduate studies. Equally

essential for both the academicians and students, academic researchcombines reasoning, methodology and empirical approaches to

increase the stock of desired knowledge and to formulate newapplications of this knowledge. Acknowledging the importanceof Academic Research, courses of Business Research Methodsand Advanced Research Methods are taught at Departmentof Management Sciences at graduate and Post-graduatelevels. Mr. Raja Rub Nawaz, Head of Department, PAFKarachi Institute of Economics and Technology (KIET) wasthe resource person. He has 14 years wide range ofexperience to his credit. Mr. Raja also rendered expert services

in different academic administrative assignments. The trainingsessions started each day with the recitation of the

verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Noorullah Davi(BSBA) and Syed Haroon (MS). Ms. Khalida

Durrani was stage secretary and the organizers ofthe session were Ms. Sajjida Reza, Mr. Bilal Sarwar, Mr. ArbabNaseebullah, Mr. Ali Kakar, Mr. Muhammad Ali, and Arbab ShujauddinKasi with additional support from different administrative staff. Theparticipants were introduced to different aspects of the SPSS softwareand data management. Similarly, effective scholarly research writingelements and guidelines were discussed. The Q & A session at the end ofevery day was eagerly awaited by the participants where their researchqueries were answered by the resource person. The week long trainingsession concluded with the presentation of the Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, Ahmed

UN Refugee Agency acrossthe country organizedactivities to mark the annual“16 Days of Activism againstGender-Based Violence” BUITEMS Student Affairs in collaboration with UNHCR and WESSorganized a seminar on “Human Rights & Gender Based Violence” on December 3, 2013 at

Green Hall. BUITEMS students, staff, faculty members,Media personnel and guests from different organizationsparticipated in this seminar. Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghaniwas the chief guest of the event. Mr. Perveez Iqbal, CEO,WESS, Mr. Jelvas Masau, Senior Production Officer,UNHCR Ms. Rehana Khilji, (UN) and Mr. MohammadShah Khan, Director UAFA were also present on theoccasion.

WESS Chief, Mr. Pervaiz Iqbal welcomed guests andaudience, Ms. Rehana Khilji delivered lecture on: “WomenRight” while Dr. Faisal Ahmed Kakar,Dean FICT, BUITEMS expressed

his thoughts about “Human Rights”. A skit about gender based violencewas performed by local TV artists that included Mr. Asad Kakar, K.DPathan and their team. Furthermore a Poster Competition was heldin order to create awareness. Mr. Jelvas Masau highlighted theefforts of BUITEMS & WESS for organizing the seminar and a postercompetition. Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghani emphasized the importanceof such events and valued joint venture of BUITEMS, WESS, andUNHCR. The prize distribution ceremony took place at the end of theprogram.

The students of 9th Semester, fromDepartment of Architecture

visited the final year juries atNED Department of Architecture & Planning and Indus Valley Schoolof Art and Architecture, Karachi. The trip was organized by Jalal FaisalKakar and Palwasha Amanullah from 29th of November to 7th ofDecember 2013. The tour was set to educate the students about theprocess of compilation and presentation of architectural researchleading to design in the final year thesis project. The students of finalyear Architecture; who will be presenting their theses in coming fewmonths got an essence of composing work and graphically designingthe thesis display. The tour was helpful for the young graduating architectsto get an idea of presenting projects to professional external architects whoare expected to visit BUITEMS during the first thesis display of Architecture

Department. Besides observing the juries, the final year students also invitedsenior architect and academician Fazal Noor to talk about and discuss the

projects. The students were given elaborate and thoughtful remarks ontheir projects. The trip created an opportunity for students to visitbuildings and institutions including Karachi Library, High Court Buildingand Central Jail. This helped the students understand the layout,circulation patterns and administration in each building respectively.The students closely observed these buildings because they wereconsidered to be meaningful case studies for the final year thesisprojects.

The concept of emotional intelligence is avery recent and much discussed topic thesedays especially in terms of how it affectstoday's workforce. Businesses are essentiallypeople oriented, so anything that impacts the effectiveness of people'sminds also impacts the businesses they run or work for. In fact, it is

believed that a person's emotional quotient (EQ) is moreimportant than their IQ and is certainly a better

predictor of quality of relationships, happiness andsuccess. A one day workshop on "The role ofEmotional Intelligence in Managerial Success"was held on December 09, 2013 at the city campusTraining Hall. This workshop was organized by Mr.M. Adeel Anjum, Lecturer Department of ManagementSciences. The responsibility of the resource person was

performed by Mr. Dilawar Khan, the master trainer of HEC andcoordinator Faculty Development Program, University of Balochistan.

Prime Minister’s National Information& Communications Technology

Scholarship Program (PMNICTSP) is one of the finest external scholarshipsawarded to the bright students of ICT, BUITEMS. On December 9, 2013Mr. Muhammad Jahanzaib Shahid from PMNICTSP visited BUITEMS.The visit was divided into different sets of activities including bond signingof Fall 2011 (Extended Spring 2012) and Fall 2012 students, directsession with PMNICTSP students (all batches), filling of feedback forms(Hostel and Academics), hostel visit, meeting with focal person andFinance/Accounts personnel regarding PMNICTSP all intakes andmeeting with BUITEMS scholarship team and concerned administration.The visit was completed successfully with its entire agenda being covered.

BUITEMS Student Affairs in collaborationwith Dawn News organized a seminar for thestudents of Mass Communication on, “Codeof Conduct for Journalists Working in Conflict Affected Areas” at GreenSeminar Hall, Takatu Campus on December 10, 2013 in which all thestudents and teachers of the Department of Mass Communicationparticipated. Syed Ali Shah, Bureau Chief of Dawn News, Quettaspoke about the issues of journalists, especially in conflict affectedareas of the country. Mr. Amanullah Ghilzai, Senior Journalist, formerreporter, news caster and producer of BBC World Service deliveredhis lecture on International Media and the role of Media in state

development. He also gave fruitful tips to the journalistsworking in tense areas. Mr. Abdul Razaq Zulmai,

Deputy Director Press Information Department,Quetta and Mr. Mohammad Shah Khan, Director UA& FA, BUITEMS were also present on the occasion,while talking to the students Mr. Mohammad Shah Khanemphasized on hard work and the importance of journalism in the society.In the end he thanked both the guests and participants.

Chief coordinator PM YouthBusiness Loan program and

Chairperson standing committeeof information and broadcasting,Marvi Memon visited BUITEMSon account of promotingbusiness youth loans onDecember 12th, 2013. Miss MarviMemon and her team were welcomedby the Vice Chancellor at Green Seminar Hall. Shein her speech highlighted certain features of theloan scheme and also shared the criteria forobtaining the loans. The seminar ended with aninteresting question answer session where Ms.Marvi Memon responded to the queries of audienceand convinced them to obtain loans and start their

own business enterprises. Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to Marvi Memon for hervisit to BUITEMS and said in the closing remarks that the students of BUITEMS would workvoluntarily for the promotion of scheme and he hoped for the program’s success.

Higher education commission of Pakistanhas approved a project for theestablishment of “Plasma Physics Lab” atBUITEMS. Main purpose of plasmalaboratory is to optimize the admixing ratio of different gasses mixture for enhancingproduction for active species of interest. Also to investigate influence on plasma parameters(density and temperature) for change in experimental chamber size and design, this is ofinterest for up scaling of experiments for the development of large size plasma processingreactors. Dr. Hamdullah Khan Tareen is the Principal Investigator of the project.

The Art of Translation calls more attention notbecause it establishes ground for internationalinteraction, and offers an excellent opportunity to

undergo socio-cultural survey of various languagesand their literatures, but also gives an opportunity to establish some kind of relevanceit has in the study area. Broadly speaking, translation turns a text of source language(SL) into a correct and understandable version of target language (TL) without losingthe suggestion of the original. (Adapted from Shiben Raina’s article). Keeping in viewthe importance of Art of Translation, Department of English organized a TranslationCompetition (Urdu to English) for students of BS English Language & Literature on December19, 2013. The activity was inaugurated by Dean FABS, Dr. Syed Muhammad Khair.He encouraged the students by emphasizing the significance of English languagein today’s technological era. He further highlighted the importance of translationskills, and added that in a country like Pakistan where English is the officiallanguage, while Urdu is the National language, and many local languages arealso spoken, students must be able to comprehend a text in SL, and be able toconvert or translate it into the TL. The students were provided with threepassages, and they had to attempt any two of them. This activity gave anopportunity to the students to measure the number of appropriate vocabulary they

have in English and Urdu languages, and thewords that can be used suitably for the translation ofan idea. Meanwhile, it was observed that majorityof the students lacked the ability to find suitableUrdu words due to code switching, and thisphenomenon created hurdles for themwhile translating; but this occurrence shallpave the way for future research. Theenthusiasm of students was witnessedduring the activity with the demand for suchmore events.

Department of Mathematics BUITEMS is flourishingsteadily with emphasis on research activities. Numerousproblems that are encountered in various branches ofscience and engineering are solved scientifically. The Mathematics department is running twoyear MS Mathematics degree program. The students of this program are required to submita thesis as partial requirement of their degrees. Their theses are supervised by the seniorf a c u l t y members based on latest research in the domain of Mathematics. The department

arranged a seminar on December 23, 2013 in which Mr.Mohammad Zahid, student of MS Mathematics at BUITEMS

presented his synopsis. The title of his synopsis was ‘LocalicGroups and Uniformities’. Ms .Sahar Raza, Chairperson

Department of Mathematics introduced the speaker tothe audience and coordinated the session. Dean FABSDr. Muhammad Khair, along with faculty members andstudents of BS Mathematics attended the seminar.Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nawaz, supervisor of Mr.Muhammad Zahid, and faculty members fromDepartments of Physics and Statistics were alsopresent on the occasion. “Bodybuilding is much like any other sport, requiring regular training, balanced diet andpositive thinking”.All Pakistan Inter-varsity Bodybuilding Championship was held on 24th of December 2013.Theevent was organized by University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore onbehalf of Higher Education Commission. The managers’ meeting was held on 23rd ofDecember 2013, which was chaired by Muhammad Irfan Sheeraz (Assistant Director Sports

HEC). More than 100 students fromtwenty universities participated in theevent in different weight classes. Prof.Dr. Muhammad Sarwar Khan was thechief guest of the occasion. Thestudent of BUITEMS, Mr. Shawn Gilwon the 6th position in the mostcompetitive class of 65 to 70 KG. TheUniversity also selected Mr. Pakistanfrom the same class. BUITEMS celebrated the last day of the year 2013 in themost momentous way possible. The 9th consecutive

Convocation of the University was held on December 31,2013. Strikingly cold weather and the warmth of joy exhibited by the graduates and BUITEMSfamily, made this occasion a memorable event, hence making the following New Year'sEvening extra special. The Convocation Procession, like always, displayed an estheticallypleasing spectacle. The elegantly decorated Arfa Karim Randhawa Expo Center, warmlywelcomed the Congregation of graduating students, faculty members, members of theBUITEMS syndicate, The Vice Chancellor and the Chief Guest of the occasion. The wholeproceeding of the convocation was telecasted live through PTV Bolan and web-casted onthe University's website, for the convenience of those, who wanted to witness the event fromhome.

The Chief Guest on the 9th Convocation was His Excellency, Chancellor BUITEMS, GovernorBalochistan Mr. Muhammad Khan Achakzai. This year the Convocation was also honoredby the presence of the Chief Minister Balochistan Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch. This was the firsttime that any Chief Minister attended the BUITEMS convocation. Along with him, a numberof dignitaries and proud parents of the graduating students were also present on the occasion.

The formal proceedings started with the recitationof Holy Quran followed by the recital of a na’at. Inhis welcome address the Vice ChancellorBUITEMS said that our aim at BUITEMS is toprepare visionary leaders who are not just jobseekers but also job creators. Moreover, whileemphasizing the importance of education, heremarked that most of our troubles are caused byignorance. And since the provincial and federalGovernments are on the same page in this regard,he suggested that an educational emergencyshould be declared, particularly in the province.

After the welcome address, degrees were awarded to graduatingstudents in the fields of Computer Engineering, Computer Science,Textile Engineering, Electronic Engineering, TelecommunicationEngineering, Fields pertaining to Applied Engineering, Biotechnology& Informatics, Microbiology, Environmental Management and Policy,Business Administration, Economics and Arts and Basic Sciences.The Governor Balochistan, in his address to the audience,congratulated the graduating students and the BUITEMS family on the9th Convocation. While appreciating the efforts extended by theUniversity he also stressed upon the importance of market based

education, research and development since this is theonly means to improve the social and economic conditions of a nation.

Governor Balochistan Mr. Muhammad Khan Achakzai and Chief MinisterBalochistan, Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch were presented with memorial shields.Maintaining his reputation of being an education friendly politician, The ChiefMinister announced a hundred thousand cash prize for each topper. TheGovernor Balochistan also announced cash awards of fifty thousand rupeesfor each winner of Badge of Honor and one hundred thousand rupees for eachGold Medalist.

As we all know that one of the mostexciting events for BUITEMS isGraduation Ceremony (Convocation),where students receive their degrees, certificates and are acknowledged publicly for theirachievements. There was another relief (a technique used insculpting) made by the department of fine arts on theprestigious occasion of the 9th convocation. The relief wasinstalled on 30th December 2013.

The sculpting relief involves cutting out material andleaving the actual sculpture raised out from thematerial. This was a primary art form in many ancientcivilizations. The relief symbolizes the graduatingstudents, it’s more like a good luck charm for thegraduating class to wish them all the very best fortheir future endeavors.

The project was supervised by the chairman FineArts department Mr. Kaleem Khan along with otherfaculty members. The display of artworks around theuniversity spreads awareness about art and designamong students and teachers from different departments.

It gives me immense pleasure to bring in record my expression as being astudent of BUITEMS. I was student of BS (Computer Engineering) sessionSpring 2003.After completion of my degree from BUITEMS, I served in different organizations, with fullconfidence as I learnt the leader-oriented inspiration through academic excellence ofteachers and administration at BUITEMS.In the Year 2008, I joined Saindak Metals Limited (SML) as Managing Director of theCompany. During my professional career, I have attended many national and internationalseminars, workshops and visited various international mining companies and projects in U.K,China and Australia.In coordination with the Chinese Company we provided electricity and portable drinking waterto all the villages within the vicinity of the project. Presently I am working on a plan for provisionof drinking water to inhabitants of Nokundi, which is a major issue of the area and a generalpublic demand.

Working in this position, I proudly observe that BUITEMS students frequently qualifyfor award of these scholarships and initiatives and come out with significant achievements.

With Masters in Horticulture, he attained hisPh.D. degree in Life Sciences from Northwest A&F University, Shaanxi, Yangling,

A purposive sample of 100 adolescents male and female with age range of10 to 25 years was taken from nonclinical population. The Beck Depression Inventory II andYoung Schema Questionnaire (Short Form) were administered on the subjects to determinethe level of depression stimulated by schema. The Readiness Ruler was also administeredto determine how much the subject was ready or how much daily life events make him toalter his schemas. In addition to these measures the Demographic Information sheet was

also provided to subjects to get the backgroundinformation from them. Data was analyzed byapplying Pearson Product Moment Correlationand Regression analysis. The results clearlysupported the hypotheses that the disorganizedor false schemas and beliefs lead to depression.Results are discussed in relation to latest schematheories and cognitive therapy which can be usedto rationalize the beliefs in maintaining the goodmental health of the individuals.
