Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9, 2014 Churche s Closing The feast today, The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, is a feast that calls to mind the centrality of the Church in Rome. The Lateran Basilica, dedicated to St. John, is located in the Diocese of Rome and is the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis. On November 9, 324 Pope Sylvester I, dedicated this church, and in the 18th century Pope Clement XII inscribed on the façade of this church: "mother and head of all churches of Rome and the world". This cathedral had been the residence of the popes from the 4th century until the return of the popes from Avignon, France in 1309. It was also the site of 5 Ecumenical Councils. Buried beneath the main altar is a wooden altar used by St. Peter to celebrate the Mass. Recently the Archdiocese of New York had to close 50 churches. There are many reasons behind it. Practically, is the fact that many ethnic parishes were established for the sake of immigrants. So literally there are Catholic churches next to one another. These ethnic parishes have done their job and so many have to be suppressed. There is also an exodus of Catholics to the suburbs and countryside and to other parts of the country. In fact churches and schools are being built in the South. The biggest reason for the closures is the fact that many Catholics are not going to Mass. In New York City the Catholic population has not changed but the attendance has dropped. Maybe 15% of Catholics attend Mass weekly. If people are not going, who is to support all these structures. How does this turn around? It was hoped that Vatican II would usher in a new birth among the faithful. The opposite has happened though not necessarily due to the Council. Attendance has dropped off, marriages have suffered, and people are not connected to their churches anymore. It is called secularization. This a phenomenon of the society as a whole, not just of Catholics. We are more focused on personal interests, materialism, consumerism, and a general apathy toward religion and faith. As society looks to humanistic secularism for answers ("Scientists say..."), people look less to the Church and faith to answer their concerns. This can be turned around. It is not the first time that the Church has found herself on the outs with society. We need to teach and evangelize the community. Liturgy and homilies need to be a source of inspiration. It is not about the funny priest or the hip tunes, it is about the reverent celebration of the Mass, the quality of the homilies that give the people knowledge of their faith so that when they walk out the doors they have learned something and are willing to bring that faith and knowledge to others. Our brief hour at Mass where we have come to pray and give worship to God should also be an opportunity to grow in our love for God and all that is good. So while churches may be closing, we still have a Catholic faith to share with the world which is more enduring than any secularist ideology or earthy desire for wealth. Christ said that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church, so be confident that He is with us, we only need to listen and be his instruments on earth. Pax Christi, Fr. Churches Closing

The feast today, The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, is a feast that calls to mind the centrality of the Church in Rome. God preserve us from any deliberate sin, no matter how small it may be. Nothing is small when it means going against God" (Mother Teresa: Her Essential Wisdom ed. by Carol Kelly-Gangi, 2006).

In honor of Christ, King of the Universe, we will have Nocturnal Adoration from

Saturday evening on November 22 at 7:30 PM through Sunday morning November 23 at 7:00 AM. Come and be in the Real

Presence of our Lord and God, Jesus Christ. The church will be open all night. Please enter through the east door (the electric door) in the courtyard. We also ask you to commit some time. The Sign-up sheet will be at the entrance of the Church. We especially need people in the wee hours of the morning. It's a tough time but worth the sacrifice and the graces that the parish and you will receive. We need a leader of a short prayer at each half hour. A Spanish speaker is needed at the bottom of the hour, and English speaker at the top of

the hour to lead the short prayer. Otherwise anyone may be at any hour. This is a time for quiet prayer and

contemplation with Jesus.

Page 5: FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEholytrinity1861.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Bulletin...

Fr. Mayhel Velásquez.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY OF OPERATIONSFor the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2014

I am happy to present the fiscal report ending June 30, 2014. For the fifth year in a row we have a surplus. We had a very good year all together. Contributions were steady and we had gains in rental income from the school. Next year I hope to repaint the interior, replace the floor under the pews and refinish the pews. Fund raisers were a big success this year. Also much of the repairs and renovations of the campus are done through the efforts of volunteers and restricted donations. Please remember your parish in your will so that we can continue to maintain our house of worship and spread the faith in years to come. The fiscal year realized $153,033 in bequests. God has truly blessed us.

Most Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Paul Prevosto
