The city will hold its next community workshop on the creation of the Fountain Valley Crossings Specific Plan at 6 p.m. July 15 in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

The meeting is the third in a series of workshops designed to create a policy and zoning framework that will allow for alternative land uses in the project area. The Fountain Valley Crossings is the area where Euclid Avenue, Newhope Avenue, Ellis Avenue, Talbert Avenue, and I-405 intersect and where Talbert Avenue and I-405 cross the Santa Ana River.

From the City Manager’s Office

Next Crossings CommunityWorkshop is July 15th

Among the goals of the city’s overall Strategic Plan is to enhance economic development.

The city’s long-term goal for The Crossings is to encourage current and future property owners to transform the current light industrial area into a more integrated district with an active and pedestrian-friendly environment. It is anticipated that this will include a mix of uses that will create a vibrant center of activity and community gathering spot for city residents.

The city has held two previous community workshops on the proposed specific plan. The first, held Feb. 18, focused on the area’s existing conditions. The second workshop was held May 14 and covered a vision for the specific plan as well as a strategic framework.

The July 15 workshop topics are public space, streetscape and mobility access.

Why is the city creating a specific plan for the Crossings?Fountain Valley currently lacks a downtown or similar city center where residents can gather. Reinvigorating the area would bring increased economic growth and tax revenue.

The city has conducted an online survey in which 51 percent of the respondents said the city needs a downtown area. Thirty-four percent of the respondents said the city does not need a downtown area. The remaining survey takers answered “maybe” or “other.”

The proposed Specific Plan also calls for the incorporation of some sort of housing based on the facts that there will be a short-term demand for new housing because Fountain Valley is an aging community of residents looking to downsize and new business can attract young workers to new multi-family homes on a long-term basis.

City Hall is at 10200 Slater Ave.

We encourage residents to attend the workshops and follow the project online at www.facebook.com/fountainvalleycrossings, www.twitter.com/fv_crossings or www.fountainvalley.org/government/departments/planningcommunitydev/FountainValleyCrossings.php
