Military BibleStick in the hands of someone in the field.
Memo checks: BibleSticks.

Max Lucado loves Christmas.
The carols and cookies, the
decorations and favorite films,
the warmth and generosity of
the season. But most of all, he
loves it because it's during this
time of year that people will
wonder and inquire about the
baby born in the manger. This
little baby became the King on
the cross. Christmas proclaims
the truth of Easter to come.
Join with Max in this lively,
heartwarming celebration of all
things Christmas. Because of
Bethlehem features stories both
insightful and whimsical. On
every page, Max's words will
encourage, captivate and inspire
you, but most importantly, they'll
point you towards the One
worth celebrating.

Quemadmodum desiderat cervus ad fontes aquarum ita
desiderat anima mea ad te Deus.
In the same way that the stag is drawn unto the
sources of water, so is my soul drawn unto you, God.
Psalm 42:1
As a child growing up in Indiana, my grandparents lived on
a spring-fed lake. We would pack up laundry baskets with
clothes and stay with Grandma and Grandfather for a
whole month. Summers were filled with frog catching,
paddle-boating, swimming, sunsets, s’mores and croquet.
Still to this day, going to the water refreshes my soul. Wa-
ter is a source of life! It is what makes our planet livable!
As we continue in our series “To the Source,” will be us-
ing Scripture as the source for finding answers to the
challenges we encounter on our daily walk with Jesus.
Join us in worship each week and refresh your soul with
the life-sustaining Word of God.

Angel Tree
The tradition of the Fountain of Life Angel Tree began many years ago! It is through the grace of
God and the congregation’s generous giving that we are able give literally hundreds to gifts to
those in our community.
How do we pick who to help?
Most of the families that become our angels are families that local school counselors have picked
as the need-iest. We currently take 3 families, of any size, from each of 6 different schools. Some of
our Angels are members of our church. Some of our Angels are families of our community that are
sponsored by church members. Each person under the age of 18 is allowed 3 gifts – two things
they need and one that they want. Angels over the age of 18 are given one gift card.
How can you help? First of all please cover the Angel Tree in prayer. It is through God’s grace that we have always met
the needs of those represented on the tree.
I will need people to help shop this year. Please contact me if you can help!
Three additional ways that you can help:
1. Pick one or more Angels from the tree (available November 18). IMPORTANT: Each Angel has a
code on it. Sign out the Angel in the Angel Tree book. Please put your name and phone number or
email. This helps me track missing Angels. Shop for your Angel and then return it back to FOL by
Sunday, December 9. If your gift is a gift card, there is a box at the Information Center or you may drop
it off in the Church office.
2. Donate money for the Angel Tree – you can put cash or a check in the offering plate for the An-
gel tree. Please put it in an envelope or write ANGEL TREE in the memo line a check. By donating
through the church your donation is tax deductible. I will then take the donated money and shop
for Angels left on the tree. You may also donate online!
3. Don’t Want to Shop? You can pick an Angel, give money and leave the shopping and wrapping to
volunteers!
Can we give gently used items?
Yes for some items – Bikes, Game Systems, Electronic
Games, Infant items, For other items please contact me
and we can discuss it.

Call Committee
The Call Committee has received the list of pastoral candidates from the district. We are
currently working with Pastor McDaniels to determine which candidates are open to receiving a
call. The following is a timeline of the call process and displays where we are at:
We want to give thanks for the prayer service and to those who made it possible. It was a great
opportunity to dedicate an extra moment of prayer over the call process. We also would like to
give thanks for those who answered the call and helped beautify God’s house as we prepare for
our next pastor.
In the coming days and weeks we will begin the process of reviewing candidate profiles and ar-
ranging for phone discussions with candidates. During this time we hope to summarize what we
learn in a meaningful way, in order to present it to the congregation during future town hall
meetings. We look forward to continuing this process and serving the congregation as God
works to unite us with the next pastor of Fountain of Life.
Sincerely,

Voter’s Meeting Estimate of Giving Its not too late to submit your
estimate of giving for 2019.
Find it on our website:

As we are preparing for our Pastor to arrive, (NO, we don't have any inside info', just praying
for it to happen in God's time) we thought it would be a good time to get back to basics.
The early Church had no mega buildings, TV coverage, Bibles for everyone, hymnals,
workbooks, etc. "The Way" did have Jesus' teachings and a few good leaders and Christians
meeting in homes and where ever they could to safely gather to become closer to Jesus in
relationship.
We carry on that tradition today at Fountain of Life with our Life Groups. Pat Shaw and I
would like for you to consider prayerfully to be a Life Group Leader or Member this fall.
May the Holy Spirit move you to make the call or text to Pat or Larry.

Circles Are Better Than Rows
Choir As I write this article, we have started busily prepar-
ing the music for the combined worship service on
October 28. I would like to again encourage more
people to become part of our choir. I have been
reading a book that is a “guide for adult choral sing-
ers”. The author, Victoria Meredith, lists some obser-
vations accredited to people in her workshops:
• When I sing, I feel good. (age 67)
• To me, choral singing is an emotional and spir-
itual experience of self -expression. (age 74)
• Singing refreshes my mind, body and soul. It is
joyful to be with others who enjoy as I do and
learn from each other. (age 62)
• Choral singing feeds my soul. (age 35)
Those are just four comments pulled from a long list.
I continue in prayer, hoping that more of the church
members will be joining with our faithful and talented
group. If you enjoy singing His praises, please come
and give choir a try!
Weekly choir rehearsals begin at
6:45 pm on Wednesdays.
If you have questions or would like further infor-
mation, please feel free to talk with me or any choir
member.

Visitation Thanksgiving is almost upon us.
“What do you give thanks for?” is
a question asked around our
Thanksgiving table. Usually my an-
swer is “FOL, family, friends, food,
good health” and other positive
things God has provided in my
life However, yesterday it came to
me, that I should also be thankful
for some of the negative things
that have happened over the year.
As some ended up being positive
in the end, either a learning expe-
rience, or bringing me closer to
Jesus. Jesus wants us to lean on
him in good times and in bad, and
to be thankful for ALL he gives us.
Even if at the time it appears to be
an uncomfortable or traumatic
situation.
What do you give God thanks for
this Holiday ? I give thanks for the
life God has given me, for my fami-
ly, my FOL Family, friends, good
health, and the Ministry he has led
me to, which is to come and visit
YOU. Please contact me when
you need or would like a visit. I
DO look forward to visiting YOU!

Families with Children 9 weeks until "It's the Most Wonderful Time
of the Year!" My family and I just returned
from a trip to the Philippines and their
shopping malls were already decorated red
and green with trees and twinkling lights and
Christmas music playing through the speakers-
-so we are officially ready for the season a bit
earlier than usual!
It is my joy to be coordinating this year's
Children's Christmas Program, which will be
held on Sunday, December 16th at 9:50am.
The beautiful story of Jesus' birth is so full of
wonder, hope, commitment, and love. Having
your child experience the Scripture this way
provides such a special learning moment (and
cute, memorable photos for parents and
grandparents!)
We will begin to practice parts and scenes for
a few minutes during Sunday School starting in
November and a short rehearsal in
December. More information to come!

celebrating the Christmas Story,

Elder Spotlight
Stuart Hofman
Describe your childhood: school, play, sports,
church As a pastor’s kid, church every Sunday was just
as common as school during the week. I truly feel that
has had a significant impact today with my own children
as church on Sundays now is as common to them as
school on weekdays. I was really involved in soccer as a
young kid and as I got older, I played various sports
throughout middle school and high school. I attended
St. Stephen’s Lutheran Day School in Hickory until we
moved to Kansas in 1988, then attended public school
through high school. I remember helping local farmers
bale hay and cut cane out of milo fields until I was 15
and old enough to have a “real” job at Sonic and
Hardees.
How did you decide on a profession? I have
recently changed professions so I’m not sure I am done
making decisions about my profession. I have left
corporate America to become a small business owner. I
feel I can do more for my family and community in this
capacity.
Tell us about your family and how you met your
wife. I met my wife Lauren through a mutual friend
when I lived in Catawba County. She was a teacher at
Claremont Elementary school at the time. We now
have two children, Graham who is 4, and Madison who
is 7 and is a first grader at Cash Elementary where
Lauren is currently a 3rd grade teacher also.
What are your prayers for Fountain of Life
Lutheran Church? My prayers for FOL is that we
continue to grow. I strive to be aware of visitors in
church and make it a point to introduce myself and
my family and thank them for worshiping with us. I
look for some way to connect with them quickly so
they feel welcome and want to come back.
I also pray that current members look to
strengthen their relationship with Jesus. Sometimes
it is easy to become complacent and just come to
church because it is Sunday and go through the
motions. There are so many opportunities to grow
and be fed with the Word of God.
Where do you want to retire?
My wife would love to retire at the beach. I would
prefer the mountains. They are more peaceful in my
opinion. Both places have great golf courses.
What about you would we be surprised at?
Oh wow, I really enjoy acapella music. I was in a
barbershop group and quartet in high school. I
played the tuba in the Kansas State Marching Band
and got to go to 4 bowl games while in college.
Stuart is one of the 3 newly elected elders.
Thanks Stuart for sharing with us.
