Anil Umer (Soloist)Anil Umer read music at Exeter College, graduating last year. Whilst at Oxford he performed in all the major university ensembles and, during his first year, sang as a choral scholar in Exeter Choir. He is now studying for an MA in Performance at the Royal Academy of Music under professor Josephine Knight. He is generously supported by a scholarship from the Royal Academy and Postgraduate Performance Awards from the Musician’s Benevolent Fund and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

George de Voil (Organ Scholar)George de Voil is the Senior Parry-Wood Organ Scholar of Exeter College, where he directs the renowned mixed-voice choir and is reading for a degree in Music. He is also Master of the Music at nearby Pusey House, with its 8-voice professional ensemble.

Nicholas O’Neill (Composer)Over the last 20 years, Nicholas O’Neill has regularly won international awards for composition. He is Chorus Master of the Malcolm Sargent Festival Choir, Associate Director of Music at St. Mary Abbots, Kensington, and was recently appointed as Composer in Residence to the Parliament Choir in addition to his ongoing role with them as Chorus Master.

The choral work he has composed for the 700th Anniversary, “Flyht” weaves together texts from the “Exeter Book”, the collection of Old English poetry, with some lines from Exeter alumus Samuel Wesley. The poem most drawn upon, and which inspires the title, is “The Phoenix” whose theme of perpetual renewal is fitting for the occasion the piece celebrates. The text from Wesley addresses academic striving, mastery, and success.
