Seminar on Grey water as an alternative to save water A seminar on “Grey water as an alternative to save water” was held at the department of Civil Engineering, on 2nd April. Engr. Fatema Tuj Jahara, Lecturer, Department of Civil engineering, presented the key note paper. The seminar was presided over by the departmental head Prof. Engr. M Ali Ashraf, PEng. In her paper Fatema Tuj Jahara dealt with the reuse of grey water. The program was conducted by Engr. Md. Ibrahim Mostazid, lecturer, department of Civil Engineering, civil engineering students, professional engineers and the faculty members attended the seminar. An increasing global population coupled with growing urbanization worldwide has led to increased demands on water supply. The rapid growth of water-intensive agriculture in developing countries and inefficient water management practices in the developed world are contributing to a global reduction in future freshwater supplies. As pressures on freshwater resources grow around the world and as new sources of supply become increasingly scarce, expensive, or politically controversial, efforts are underway to identify new ways of meeting water needs. Among these potential new sources of supply is “grey water.” Grey water, which can be defined as all in-building wastewater streams, with the exception of toilet wastewater. The reuse of grey water holds a number of advantages. Firstly, it is continually and consistently produced onsite, meaning a readily available and reliable source of water is available for reuse. Secondly, grey water is produced in sufficient quantities for reuse applications. For example, 68% of in-building wastewater is discharged as grey water and 32% as black water indicating that reused grey water can provide sufficient water for household toilet flushing in addition to other applications, such as garden irrigation. The rule of thumb for reuse of grey water is “You can use it for anything except drinking, cooking and perhaps teeth brushing (and showering/bathing) that does not require water of potable quality. This rule of thumb applies to the normal low-cost treatment methods. If you went for high-tech methods such as membrane, UV, ozonation etc. then eventually you would get drinking water quality”. So, we can reuse grey water after some physical treatment like screening & filtration for gardening, irrigation purposes at minimum cost which will be beneficial to reduce the amounts of fresh water consumption in our country.

The very recent earthquake of Nepal in April 25, 2015 of magnitude 7.8 is the extreme warning for the vulnerable structures in Bangladesh, specially the region around the fault line over the contact of Eurasian and Indian plate. Plate Boundary Fault 1 passes just beside the Chittagong city, where the sub ducting Indian plate created a reverse fault with Burma plate, which has potential to create earthquake of magnitude 8.5, which will destroy the vulnerable structures in Chittagong and probably 1,37,063 people could have been dead. The earthquake of magnitude 6.0 at Bandarban-Myanmar border in 1997 killed almost 20 people. A gas pipeline have crossed Sitakund fault at Nasirabad which could have collapsed during strong earthquake around Chittagong. Engr. Mohammad Raihan Mukhlis emphasis in his presentation about the fact that as earthquake is a natural hazard we cannot avoid it. Now the question is what to do? Yes, we have only opportunity to minimize the risk of the hazard by assessing seismic vulnerability of built environment i.e. buildings, bridges, electrical transmission, water and gas pipelines of Chittagong city as quickly as possible so that the vulnerable structures can be retrofitted on the priority basis and also by growing awareness among people.

Seminar on Rainwater Harvesting as alternative source of palatable water

A seminar on “Rainwater Harvesting as alternative source of palatable water” was held at the department of Civil Engineering, on 4th August. Engr. Tajkia Ahmad, Lecturer, Department of Civil engineering, presented the key note paper. The seminar was presided over by the departmental head Prof. Engr. M Ali Ashraf, PEng. and was largely attended by the civil engineering students, professional engineers and the faculty members. Engr Tajkia Ahmad in her presentation dealt with the rainwater harvesting i.e. rainwater collection & storage to satisfy the day by day increasing demand of water consumption in our country. The program was conducted by Engr. Md. Ibrahim Mostazid, lecturer, department of Civil Engineering. Groundwater is available in shallow aquifers in adequate quantity in the flood plains and Bangladesh achieved remarkable successes by providing drinking water at low-cost to the rural population through sinking of shallow tube wells. Unfortunately, As-contamination of shallow tube well water in excess of acceptable limit has become a major public health problem in Bangladesh. Among the various alternative technologies to augment freshwater resources, rainwater harvesting and utilization is a decentralized, environmentally sound solution, which can avoid many environmental problems often caused in conventional large-scale projects using centralized approaches. Rainwater harvesting, in its broadest sense, is a technology used for collecting and storing rainwater for human use from rooftops, land surfaces or rock catchments using simple techniques such as jars and pots as well as engineered techniques. Rainwater harvesting has been practiced for more than 4,000 years, owing to the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall. It is an important water source in many areas with significant rainfall but lacking any kind of conventional, centralized supply system. It is also a good option in areas where good quality fresh surface water or groundwater is lacking. The application of appropriate rainwater harvesting technology is important for the utilization of rainwater as a water resource. About 150bn liters of rainwater could be harvested in the whole country during the monsoon season alone and water can be stored for four to five months without bacterial contamination. CWASA is dependent largely on groundwater to meet water demand. This is resulting the groundwater to drop by 3 meter every year. In the coastal belt of Bangladesh groundwater is often saline. Rain water harvesting reduces the rate of power consumption for pumping of groundwater. For pumping amount of electricity required 1000-1400kw/day/pump by CWASA. Engr. Tajkia Ahmad stated that the people of Chittagong City are in real trouble for water, so the importance of RWH cannot be overemphasized. When people will know that a scientific and cheap method is within their reach and it is for the betterment of their health, it will positively change their attitude and practice towards multi-uses of rainwater.

Seminar on“Status of Stagnant and Open Surface Water Sources in Chittagong Metropolitan Area ”

A seminar on “Status of Stagnant and Open Surface Water Sources in Chittagong Metropolitan Area (CMPA), Bangladesh” was held at the Department of Civil Engineering, on 9thMay.Dr. Zinnat Ara Begum, Lecturer in Environmental Science, Department of Civil Engineering, presented the key note paper. The seminar was presided over by the departmental headProf. Engr. M. Ali Ashraf, P. Eng. and was largely attended by the civil engineering students, professional engineers and the faculty members.Dr. Zinnat Ara Begumin her PowerPoint presentation discusses about the prospects of reusing the stagnant and open surface water sources in CMPAas an alternative to traditional water supply sources. The program was conducted by Engr. Md. Ibrahim Mostazid, Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, Southern University Bangladesh. The concern over ensuing fresh water scarcity has forced the developing countries to delve for alternative water resources. The study examined the potential of stagnant surface water bodies (SSWBs) as alternative fresh water resources in the densely populated Chittagong metropolitan area (CMPA) of Bangladesh – where there is an acute shortage of urban fresh water supply. Water samples, collected at one month intervals for a period of one year from 12 stations distributed over the whole metropolis. Samples were analyzed for pH, water temperature (WTemp), turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids, total solids, total hardness, dissolved oxygen (DO),chloride, orthophosphates, ammonia, total coliforms (TC) and trace metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, As and Fe) concentrations. Based on these parameters different types of water quality indices (WQIs) were deduced. WQIs showed most of CMPA-SSWBs as good or medium quality water bodies while none were categorized as bad. Moreover, it was observed that the minimal water quality index (WQIm),computed using five parameters: WTemp, pH, DO, EC and turbidity gave reliable estimate of water quality. The WQIm gave similar results in 72% of the cases compared with other WQIs which were based on larger set of parameters. Based on our finding, we suggest the wider use WQIm in developing countries for assessing health of SSWBs as it will minimize the analytical cost to overcome the budget constraints involved in this kind of evaluations. It was observed that except turbidity and TC content, all other quality parameters fluctuated within the limit of World Health Organization suggested standards for drinking water. From our findings we concluded that if the turbidity and TC content of water from SSWBs in CMPA are taken care of, they will become good candidates as alternative water resources all-round the year.
