INTERNSHIP ORIENTATION BY NPIA The college and Nepal Pashmina Industry Association (NPIA) jointly conducted an Internship Orientation program for students and graduates at the college on February 28. The aim of the program was to acquaint the attendees with the opportunities and challenges of the pashmina industry in Nepal and also to provide more information about the exclusive internship tie-up between the college and NPIA. The speakers, Pushpaman Shrestha (President, NPIA and Advisory Board Member, NCFT), Durga Bikram Thapa (Vice President, NPIA), Vijoy Dugar (General Secretary, NPIA) and Karken Gurung (Executive Member, NPIA) talked about the history and current status of the pashmina industry as well as it importance to the Nepalese economy. The speakers also shared some of their personal and professional experiences as pashmina entrepreneurs. They also highlighted the opportunities as well as challenges facing the industry and its immediate requirements of talented and upcoming designers for value addition in its products through the internship tie-up with the college. ORIENTATION PROGRAM 2013

The orientation program for the latest batch of students(12th batch) took place at the college on December 06which saw the presence of newly admitted students of the12th batch as well as staff and faculty members.

Tashi Dolma Sherpa (Emcee, 9th batch student) startedthe proceedings and introduced the students to the staffand faculty members present. Gyani Shova Tuladhar(Founder Principal) delivered the welcome speech to thestudents while Jeebeswor Lal Shrestha (Vice Principal)introduced them to the Bachelor of Fashion Design (BFD)program.

Faculty members of the college, Rajendra Singh, RojinShakya, Richa Tuladhar and Kushma Shrestha briefed thestudents about the courses they would be conducting.The guest speakers at the event were Neelima Sharma(2nd batch graduate and Proprietor, Neelima’s FashionStudio) and Shama Banu (5th batch graduate and Owner,Shama’s Creations) who shared some of their college andprofessional experiences. Individual introduction of thestudents were also done by themselves amidst theprogram.

The program ended with a surprise quiz and students whoanswered correctly were handed gifts by Jeebeswor LalShrestha (Vice Principal). The classes for the 12th batchformally commenced from December 10.

PIDIITE WORKSHOP & EXHIBITIONNamuna College of Fashion Technology (NCFT) and PidiliteIndustries Limited jointly organized the “Fevicryl HobbyIdeas – Workshop and Exhibition” at the college premisesfrom January 12 to January 17 for students, graduates,staff and faculty members.

The event aimed to enhance the creativity and skill of theparticipants by imparting new concepts and techniquesin designing and other related areas. The workshop wasconducted by Hema Mehra (Senior Artist and Trainer,Pidilite Industries) and Bablu Kumar Chowdhery (SeniorOfficer and Trainer, Pidilite Industries).

The culmination of the workshop was an Exhibition whichwas held at the college premises on January 17 duringwhich the designs/products made by the trainees weredisplayed. In addition, their individual collections weregraded by Manohar Lal Shrestha (Senior Textile Expertand Advisory Board Member, NCFT) and Hema Mehra(Senior Artist and Trainer, Pidilite Industries).

Manish Rai and Divya Bhandari (12th batch students) weredeclared the joint winners among trainees of the 1st shiftwhile Sanu Namaya and Deepa Bhandari (12th batchstudents) were declared the 1st runner-up and the 2nd

runner-up respectively. Likewise, Arzoo Shrestha (11th

batch) was declared the winner among trainees of the2nd shift, China Kumari Thapa (11th batch) was declaredthe 1st runner-up, and Sarila Maharjan (11th batch) andRishu Thapa Magar (NIT student) were declared the joint2nd runners-up. All of them received cash prizes from thecollege and gift hampers from Pidilite Industries.

All participants received a Certificate of Participation whilethe trainers were presented with a souvenir and a Letterof Appreciation by Gyani Shova Tuladhar (Founder Principal).

TALK PROGRAM WITHSADIK R. KHAN

Sadik R. Khan (President/CEO, SARK Trading & MarketingInternational, Bangladesh) was the speaker at a talkprogram held at the college on February 05. He talkedabout his professional experiences in fashionmerchandising and marketing and also showed some of

the design collections of his company. He advised thestudents to make efforts to become an entrepreneur andto start small but think big while commencing a business.He also highlighted the progress made by thegarment/textile/fashion industry of Bangladesh and theopportunities for the same in Nepal. His visit to the collegeas a speaker was facilitated by Rajendra Singh(Faculty/Advisory Board Member).

TALK PROGRAM WITH LAYNEGOLDSMITH

Layne Goldsmith (Professor of Art at the University ofWashington) was the speaker at a talk program held atthe college on February 28. Besides being a renownedexpert in textiles, she also designs and produces customrugs woven in Nepal under her own label, Layne GoldsmithStudio. She gave a presentation on some designs andhighlighted the concepts behind them. She also sharedher vast personal and professional experiences in the fieldof textiles and rug production. Among the audience werestudents, graduates, faculty/Advisory Board members ofthe college and members of Alternative Technology, whofacilitated her visit as the speaker.

PRESENTATION BY 12TH BATCH

A presentation by students of the 12th batch took placeat the college on March 13 and 14 as part of their ComputerBasics course. The students were divided into groups andeach group prepared and presented two cutworks ofdesigns. The group members then elaborated on thetheme, concept, inspiration and other details of the designs.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO NEPALSRIJANATMAK KALAGUTHI

Students of the 11th batch visited Nepal SrijanatmakKalaguthi, Lalitpur on December 23 during which theyobserved and learnt about various processes and activitiesfirsthand such as weaving, yarn spinning, silk cocoontreatment and production, batik painting, and gemprocessing and cutting. The visit enhanced the practicalknowledge of the students as well as complemented theirclassroom based theoretical knowledge.

WELCOME PROGRAM FOR12TH BATCH

The Welcome Program for the freshers of the 12th batchwas jointly organized by students of the 9th, 10th and 11th

batch at the Directional Exhibition and Conventional Center(DECC) on March 28.

The program started with a welcome speech by GyaniShova Tuladhar (Founder Principal) and Jeebeswor LalShrestha (Vice Principal).

A group dance was performed by Aleena Shrestha, AshikaRaut, Nabina Karki and Rabina Karki (11th batch students).Solo dance performances were given by Smita Maharjan,Neha Joshi Khanal (10th batch students) and China KumariThapa (11th batch) while Sangita Thapa and AshmitaSharma (9th batch students) performed as a duo. ChummiDolma Sherpa, Rabina Karki and Nabina Karki (11th batchstudents) also performed a dance. Likewise, there weresong performances by Arzoo Shrestha and Chummi DolmaSherpa (11th batch students).

Students of the 12th batch gave their introductions duringthe introduction session and also participated in fungames. Rajendra Singh (Faculty/Advisory Board Member)delivered a speech to the freshers while Arzoo Shrestha(11th batch) and Dipti Karki (10th batch) shared some oftheir college experiences with them.

Divya Bhandari (12th batch) received the “Best Dress(Female)” prize from Jeebeswor Lal Shrestha (Vice Principal)while Manish Rai (12th batch) received the “Best Dress(Male)” prize from Kushma Shrestha (Faculty Member).Likewise, Binod Khattri (12th batch) received the “BestPersonality (Male)” prize from Richa Tuladhar (HR Manager)while Tashi Dolma Gurung (12th batch) received the “BestPersonality (Female)” prize from Rajendra Singh(Faculty/Advisory Board Member).

The emcees for the program were Karma Yangzeen Lama(10th batch), Pramisha Shrestha (11th batch) and TashiDolma Sherpa (9th batch). The dress code at the eventwas High Fashion or Punk.

“DESIGNER CARPET 2014”COMPETITION

Alumni Association of Namuna College of FashionTechnology (AANCFT) and Alternative Technology, themakers of “Galaincha” software jointly organized “DesignerCarpet 2014” a carpet designing competition at the collegeduring January.

The competition was held among graduates and studentsof the college and gave them an opportunity to designcarpets of their own concept and theme either manuallyor by using “Galaincha” software.

Radha Barmasakha (5th batch graduate) was declared thewinner among the 13 contestants and received 1 yearGalaincha software subscription worth $1200 and a cashprize of Rs. 3000. Sabin Dhungana (12th batch student)was declared the 1st runner up and received 6 monthsGalaincha software subscription worth $600 and a cashprize of Rs. 2000. Likewise, Arzoo Shrestha (11th batchstudent) was declared the 2nd runner up and received 3months Galaincha software subscription worth $300 anda cash prize of Rs. 1000.

Layne Goldsmith (Professor of Art, University of Washington)handed the prizes and the certificate of participation tothe winners and the participants. The prizes weresponsored by Alternative Technology and AANCFTrespectively.

5TH BATCH GRADUATE’S SOLOFASHION SHOW

Shama Banu (5th batch graduate and Owner, Shama'sCreations) organized her solo fashion show titled "Sampada- The Heritage Fashion Show" at the Hotel Yak and Yeti onSeptember 27. The show promoted traditional and naturalfabrics of Nepal through five fashion sequences: TraditionalTwist, Culture Fusion, Ethnic Flavor, Panchebaja andTributes to Royals.

STUDENTS FEATURED IN ECSLIVING & THE HIMALAYAN TIMES

Sangita Thapa, Shreena Maharjan, Anu Thapa and MeeraMaharjan (9th batch students) were featured as designersin the cover story of the September 2013 issue of ECSLiving magazine. Likewise, Subindra Thapamagar andRanjeeta Adhikari (10th batch students) were featured asdesigners in the September 27, TGIF issue of TheHimalayan Times.

CLOSING PROGRAM OFGALAINCHA SOFTWARE TRAININGThe college, Alternative Technology (AT) and AlumniAssociation of Namuna College of Fashion Technology(AANCFT) jointly commenced and concluded training on“Galaincha” software to the college’s alumni and faculty.

A formal event titled “Closing Program of Galainchasoftware training” was organized at the college premiseson December 21 to mark the end of the training whichwas conducted from September 14 to December 14, with11 trainees comprising the first batch of trainees.

Dr. Jyoti Tandukar (CEO, Alternative Technology and AdvisoryBoard Member, NCFT) delivered the welcome and conceptspeech. Likewise, the distinguished personalities to delivertheir congratulatory messages were Pushpa Man Shrestha(President, Nepal Pashmina Industries Association &Advisory Board Member, NCFT), Ram Bahadur Gurung(Senior Vice President, Nepal Carpet Exporters Association),Uday Raj Pandey (President, Garment Association of Nepal& Advisory Board Member, NCFT) and Shambhu Sherpa(President, Central Carpet Industries Association).

Sanij Shrestha (Vice President, AANCFT), RadhaBarmasakha (Member, AANCFT) and Anil Bir Singh Tuladhar(Faculty, NCFT), shared their experiences of using thesoftware and the benefits of undertaking the training. Thetrainees were awarded a certificate of completion by GyaniShova Tuladhar (Founder Principal, NCFT), Dr. JyotiTandukar (CEO, Alternative Technology) and NeelimaSharma (President, AANCFT).

Pooja Shrestha (Assistant Manager, Alternative Technologyand Member, AANCFT) received a letter of appreciationon behalf of the college and the alumni by Gyani ShovaTuladhar (Founder Principal, NCFT) for her contributionsas the trainer.

Other speakers at the event were Gyani Shova Tuladhar(Founder Principal, NCFT), Neelima Sharma (President,AANCFT), Rajendra Singh (Advisory Board and FacultyMember, NCFT) and Padma Tandukar (Manager, AlternativeTechnology).

The program concluded with a display of individual designscreated using the software by the trainees, followed by aQ & A session.

IMAGE CHANNEL’S 17THANNIVERSARY & SKAL NITE 2014

NCFT was one of the sponsors of the “Fashion Show”segment at Image Channel’s 17th anniversary programheld on February 26 at the Radisson Hotel. The fashionsequence contributed by the college was titled “Drapesin Vogue”.

Likewise, the college was the sponsor for the “FashionShow” at SKAL Nite 2014 organized by SKAL Club ofKathmandu at Hotel Annapurna on February 28. Thecollege presented three fashion sequences: (1) Local toGlobal, (2) “Haku Patasi” Fusion (Supported by NaasaMandal) and (3) Drapes In Vogue. Studentsalso performed as models for the "Being Human" clothingbrand during the event.

Models from the 12th batch for the events were: AasthaKhati, Deepika Khadka, Divya Bhandari, Preksha Shahi,Rajani Maharjan, Rajani Thapa, Ritika Lama, SajaniShrestha, Sanu Namaya and Tashi Dolma Gurung.

Dress Coordinators/Volunteers from the 9th batch were:Diva Ojha, Raj Sunam, Rubina Dangol and Sangita Darnal.The shows were choreographed by Rojin Shakya (Faculty,NCFT).

VISIT OF ITC PROGRAM MANAGER

Matthias Knappe (Program Manager - Cotton, Textiles andClothing Sector Competitiveness, International TradeCenter) visited the college on March 12 accompanied byVijoy Dugar (General Secretary, Nepal Pashmina IndustryAssociation) and Murari P. Gautam Upadhya (TradeConsultant – Value Chain, Market Analysis, TradeFacilitation and Project Management).

During the visit, the college’s role and efforts for valueaddition to the pashmina industry of Nepal through its tie-up with Nepal Pashmina Industry Association werediscussed as well as ITC’s facilitations for it. He showeda keen interest in the developments, activities andachievements of the college as well as interacted with thestudents. His visit was facilitated by Nepal PashminaIndustries Association (NPIA).

AUDITIONS FOR 9TH ANNUALGRADUATION FASHION SHOW

The audition of the models for the upcoming AnnualGraduation Fashion Show titled “Journey of Fashion IX –Charismatique Fashionistas” was held at the college onMarch 12 & April 4. The Annual Graduation Fashion Show,now in its 9th year, is being organized by the 9th batchstudents and will be held at the Hotel Yak and Yeti onJune 13.

NCFT was the dress sponsor for students of Ace HigherSecondary School who were declared Winners in the“Fashion Show” segment at “Kaleidoscope 2014 – AceHigher Secondary Inter School Festival”. The eventorganized by Ace Higher Secondary School was held at itsown premises and Nepal Academy Hall fromFebruary 24 - 28.
