THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine somebody coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for posses-sions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we

ought to be ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope because Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advocate through Christ to remain with us always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and pro-claim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us through the power of the Spirit. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The people of Samaria accepted the word of God preached by Philip; they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:5-8, 14-17). Psalm — Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66) Second Reading — Act with gentleness and reverence to-ward all, so that when you are maligned those who defame you will be the ones put to shame (1 Peter 3:15-18) or 1 Peter 4:13-16. Gospel — I will not leave you orphans, but will come to you (John 14:15-21) or Jn 17:1-11a.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. St. Alphonsus Liguori

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just as the origins of Lent have to do with accompanying people in the final stages of preparation for baptism at Eastertime, so does the structure of the Easter season help the newly received Catholics take root in the community. This is the season of “mystagogy,” which means “reflection on the mysteries.” This means that new Catholics are remembering the sacra-ments by which they become one with us, and are sorting out the implications for their everyday life. They can understand the excitement of Cornelius and his fami-

ly in the first reading, filled with the Holy Spirit, and so eager to begin their new life that they overwhelm St. Peter. The sec-ond reading and the Gospel today likewise help our new broth-ers and sisters explore their new life as an experience of God’s tender love. Long ago, our tradition named these newly baptized adults and children the “neophytes,” from Greek words meaning “newly planted.” Newly planted in the garden of faith, they look to us to provide the fertile soil in which their new life can take root and grow. You can help. If you have “neophytes” in your par-ish, a card or note of welcome, or warm words of congratula-tion, are still timely. It’s Easter! READINGS FOR THE WEEK

The Memorare REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
