THE SEASON OF SEPTUAGESIMA (PRE-LENT)

Septuagesima is the ninth Sunday before Easter, the third before Lent, called also Dominica Circum-dederunt from the first word of the Introit of the Mass. This Church Liturgical Season begins the Easter Cycle. The Sundays of Septugesima are named for their distance away from Easter. The first Sunday of Septuagesima gives its name to the entire season as it is known as "Septuagesima." "Septuagesima" means "seventy," and Septuagesima Sunday comes roughly seventy days before Easter. This seventy represents the seventy years of the Babylonian Captivity. The second Sunday of Septu-agesima is known as "Sexagesima, which means "sixty". Sexagesima Sunday comes roughly sixty days before Easter. The third Sunday of Septuagesima is known as "Quinquagesima," which means "fifty" and which comes roughly fifty days before Easter. Quadragesima means "forty," and this is the name of the first Sunday of Lent and the Latin name for the entire season of Lent. Septuagesima and Lent are both times of penance, Septuagesima being a time of voluntary fasting in preparation for the ob-ligatory Great Fast of Lent. Throughout this short Season and that of Lent (next Season) you will no-tice a deepening sense of sobriety, penance and somberness with the omission of the Alleluia and Gloria, culminating in Passiontide (the last two weeks of Lent). Septuagesima is inaugurated in the Roman Martyrology by the words: "Septuagesima Sunday, on which the canticle of the Lord, Alleluia, ceases to be said".

YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH December 8, 2020 -- December 8, 2021

“Devotion to St. Joseph is one of the choicest graces that God can give to a soul, for it is tan-tamount to revealing the entire treasury of our Lord’s graces. When God wishes to raise a soul to greater heights, he unites it to St. Joseph by giving it a strong love for the good saint.”

--St. Peter Julian Eymard

UNDER MARY'S MANTLE

"In the last times the Lord will especially spread the renown of His Mother: Mary began salvation and by her intercession it will be concluded. Before the Second Coming of Christ, Mary must, more than ever, shine in mercy..."

--Venerable Mary of Agreda ST. FAUSTINA'S PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O my Jesus, I beg You on behalf of the whole Church: Grant it love and the light of Your Spirit, and give power to the words of Priests so that hardened hearts might be brought to repentance and return to You, O Lord. Lord, give us holy Priests; You your-self maintain them in holiness. O Divine and Great High Priest, may the power of Your mercy accompany them everywhere and protect them from the devil's traps and snares which are continually being set for the soul of Priests. May the power of Your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught all that might tarnish the sanctity of Priests, for You can do all things." Diary #1052

FROM THE DIARY OF ST. FAUSTINA, THE SECRE-TARY AND APOSTLE OF DIVINE MERCY

598 Oh, how ardently I de-sire that every soul would praise Your mercy. Happy is the soul that calls upon the mercy of the Lord. It will see that the Lord will defend it as His glory, as He said. And who would dare fight against God? All you souls, praise the Lord's mercy by trusting in His mercy all your life and especially at the hour of your death. And fear nothing, dear soul, whoever you are; the greater the sinner, the greater his right to Your mercy, O Lord. O incom-prehensible goodness! God is the first to stoop to the sinner. O Jesus, I wish to glorify Your mercy on behalf of thousands of souls. I know very well, O my Jesus, that I am to keep telling souls about Your goodness, about Your incomprehensible mercy. 599 On one occasion, after a person had asked me for prayer, when I met the Lord I said to Him, "Jesus, I especially love those souls whom You love." And Je-sus answered, And as for Me, I bestow special graces on those souls for whom you intercede. 600 How wondrously Jesus defends me; truly this is a great grace of God which I have experienced for a long time now. 601 Once, when one of our sisters became fatally ill and all the community was gathered together, there was also a priest there who gave the sister absolution. Suddenly, I saw many spirits of dark-ness. Then, forgetting that I was with the sisters, I seized the holy water sprinkler and sprinkled the spirits, and they disappeared at once. However, when the sisters came to the refectory, Mother Su-perior [Borgia] remarked that I should not have sprinkled the sick sister in the presence of the priest, as this was his duty. I accepted the admoni-tion in the spirit of penance, but holy water is in-deed of great help to the dying. 602 My Jesus, You see how weak I am of myself. Therefore, You yourself direct my affairs. And know, Jesus, that without You I will not budge for any cause, but with You I will take on the most dif-ficult things.

PUBLIC ROSARY RALLY

On Saturday, February 20, the Feast of Saints Jacinta and Francisco of Fatima, there will be a Rosary Rally in repara-tion for sin and the conversion of Ameri-ca at 12 noon in front of Macy's in Her-ald Square (Broadway between 34th and 35th Streets). Braving the cold to pray for sinners in imitation of the sacrifices of Jacinta and Francisco is a good Lenten penance! Saints Jacinta and Francisco are models for us of the necessity and the benefits of suffering gladly offered to prevent poor souls from going to hell.

SAINT JOHN BOSCO - January 31

The Dream of the Snake and the Rosary

I want to tell you a dream I had some nights ago, most probably on the eve of the As-sumption. I dreamed that I was at my brother’s home at Castelnuovo d’ Asti with all my boys. While they were at play, a total stranger came up to me and asked me to go with him. He took me to a meadow alongside the playground and pointed to a huge, ugly snake, over twenty feet long, coiled in the grass. Frightened, I wanted to run off, but the stranger held me back. “Get closer and take a good look,” he said. “What?” I gasped. “Don’t you realize that the monster could spring on me and gobble me up in no time?” “Don’t be afraid! Nothing of the sort will happen, just come with me.” “Nothing doing! I‘m not crazy!” “Then stay where you are,” the stranger replied. And he went to fetch a rope. “Take this end,” he said on his return, “and grip it tightly with both hands. I’ll hold the other end, and we’ll let it dangle over the snake.” “And then?” “Then we’ll snap it across its back.” “You must be crazy, the snake will leap up and tear us to pieces.” “Go on! Click it up to full size and give yourself a fright”! “No, it won’t. Leave that to me.” “Count me out! I have no intention to risk my life for a thrill of this kind!” Again I tried to run away, but the stranger once more assured me that I had nothing to fear, because the snake would do me no harm. He talked so persuasively that I stayed on and agreed to his plan. He went around to the other side of the monster. We stretched the rope and then snapped it across the snake’s back. The monster immediately sprang up and struck at the rope, but as it did so, it ensnared itself as in a noose. “Hold on!” the stranger shouted. “Don’t let go!” He ran to a nearby pear tree and tied his end of the rope to it. Then he came to me and tied his end of the rope to it. Then he came to me and tied my end to the iron grating of a win-dow in the house. The snake kept furiously struggling to free itself, writhing, thrashing and flailing about. In its fury, it tore itself to pieces, scattering its flesh over the area, till it was slashed to a mere skeleton. The stranger then un-tied the rope and coiled it up, “Now watch very carefully!” he said as he put it into a box and closed it. By this time the boys had swarmed about me. Within a few moments he opened the box. We looked in and were astounded to see the rope shaped into the words Ave Maria – “Hail Mary.” “How did that happen?” I asked. “The snake,” the man replied, “is a symbol of the Devil, whereas the rope stands for Ave Maria, or rather, the Ro-sary, a succession of Hail Marys with which we can strike, conquer and destroy all of Hell’s demons.” What followed is even stranger and more amazing. Now, while talking with that stranger about the rope, the snake and what they symbolized, I turned around and saw boys picking up scraps of snake meat and eating them. “What are you doing?” I shouted. “Are you mad? That meat is poisonous.” “It‘s delicious!” They replied. And yet no sooner had they swallowed it than they would crumple to the ground, and their bodies would swell and harden like stone. I was helpless, because, despite this, more and more boys kept eating that meat. I shouted and yelled at them, and even slapped and punched them, to keep them from eating, but in vain. For everyone who crum-pled to the ground, another took his place. Then I called the clerics and told them to go among the boys and do all they could to make them stop eating that meat. My order was ineffective; worse yet, some clerics themselves began to eat it and they too fell to the ground. Nearly out of my mind at seeing so many boys lying about me in such a piti-ful state, I turned to the stranger. “What does this mean?” I asked. “These boys know that this meat will kill them, yet they eat it. Why?” “Because ‘the sensual man does not perceive the things that are of God!’ That’s why!” He answered. “But isn’t there some way of saving these boys?” “Yes, there is.” “What?” “Anvil¹* and hammer.” “Anvil and hammer? What for?” “To put the boys back in shape.” “You mean I am to put them on an anvil and strike them with the hammer?” “Look,” the stranger said, “this whole thing is a symbol. The hammer symbolizes Confession, and the anvil symboliz-es Holy Communion. These are the remedies you must use.” I went to work and found the treatment very effective, but not for all. While most boys were restored to life and re-covered, a few did not, because their Confessions were bad.602 My Jesus, You see how weak I am of myself. There-fore, You yourself direct my affairs. And know, Jesus, that without You I will not budge for any cause, but with You I will take on the most difficult things.

The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O’Connor on December 28, 1993

The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn

We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have

your babyʹs name inscribed in our “Book of Lifeʺ.

LEGION OF MARY – REGINA MUNDI

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall follow-ing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more information on joining this ministry as an active or auxil-iary member please contact John Kinney at: [email protected]

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

SUBWAY ROSARY

Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth

Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gath-

er at Holy Innocents by 10:00am. The group will then proceed to 42nd and Broadway Time Square subway station. We will be located by the Time

Square Shuttle downstairs. We recite 20 decades of the Holy Rosary and return back to Holy Innocents around 12:15. Come for all or part of the Subway

Rosary.

Upcoming Subway Rosaries

Will resume when restrictions are lifted

We love people and are grateful for our real estate business. Please call/email so we can listen to your real estate needs and together discuss a plan of action for your desire to purchase and/or sale. We could meet via Zoom and/or meet safely with masks/distance at your residence or elsewhere. We are 100% communicative, excellent listeners, careful, very caring, respect-ful, diligent, creative, friendly, and highly experienced. We would like to donate a percentage of our commission to Holy Innocents Church. All would be discussed, put in email and writing upon agreement to work with one another.
