  • RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION AT A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS:

DO NOT RESPOND 'AMEN' BEFORE RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION!

    CHURCH UNITY OCTAVE

The Church Unity Octave (also known as The Chair of Unity Octave) is one of the most special and rich-ly indulgenced novenas of the Church year. It begins on January 18, the Feast of St. Peter’s Chair in Rome and concludes on January 25, Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. It has accomplished an im-mense good in awakening Catholics to a mission consciousness and to the need of interesting them-selves in the conversion of those outside the Fold. The intentions are as follows:

January 18: The union of all Christians in the one true faith and in the Church.

January 19: The return of separated Eastern Christians to communion with the Holy See

January 20: The reconciliation of Anglicans with the Holy See.

January 21: The reconciliation of European Protestants with the Holy See.

January 22: That American Christians become one in union with the Chair of Peter.

January 23: The restoration of lapsed Catholics to the sacramental life of the Church.

January 24: That the Jewish people come into their inheritance in Jesus Christ .

January 25: The missionary extension of Christ’s kingdom throughout the world

Novena Prayers for these intentions will be recited following each Traditional Latin Mass on these days. In charity offer your Holy Communion and Holy Mass for these daily intentions. If you are not able to pray these prayers publicly, please take a leaflet from the church and pray them privately.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF PONTMAIN

O Mary, my Mother, I kneel before you with A heavy heart. The bur-den of my sins oppresses me. The knowledge of my weakness discour-ages me. I am beset by fears and temptations of every sort. Yet I am so attached to the things of this world that instead of longing for Heaven I am filled with dread at the thought of death.

O Mother of Mercy, have pity on me in my distress. You are all-powerful with your Divine Son. He can refuse no request of your Immaculate Heart. Show yourself a true Mother to me by being my advocate before His throne. O Refuge of Sinners and Hope of the Hopeless, to whom shall I turn if not you? Obtain for me, then, O Mother of Hope, the grace of true sorrow for my sins, the gift of perfect resigna-tion to God's Holy Will, and the courage to take up my cross and follow Jesus. above all I pray, O dearest Mother, that through your most powerful intercession my heart may be filled with Holy Hope, so that in life's darkest hour I may never fail to trust in God my Savior, but by walking in the way of His command-ments I may merit to be united with Him, and with you in the eternal joys of Heaven. Amen.

Mary, our Hope, have pity on us. Hope of the Hopeless, pray for us.

Our Lady of Pontmain, Mother of Hope and Queen of Peace,

pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

BLESSED FR. JAMES ALBERIONE'S A PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR

Blessed Souls, you are suffering and asking suffrage from me; I am in great danger and need, and I await aid and protection from you. So for this year I will offer all my prayers and especially all my good works for you. And you in turn remember my needs; de-liver me from the dangers I face and in particular, obtain for me this grace (mention petition). And let the first of you to enter heaven not cease to plead before the Divine Mercy until I, too, arrive there. May the Sa-cred Heart bless this agreement. Amen.

FROM THE LETTERS OF PADRE PIO

When the soul grieves and is afraid of offending God, it does not offend Him, and is very far from committing sin. (Letters II, p. 67).

Temptation is a sure sign the soul is very pleasing to the Lord. (Letters III, p. 52).

I feel a great desire to abandon myself with greater trust, to the divine mercy, and to place my hope in God alone. (Letters I, p. 254).

Terrible is the justice of God. But let us not forget also that his mercy is infinite. (GP, 138).

    DAY OF PENANCE FOR ABORTION

According to a decree of the United States Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops, January 22 is a day of penance and reparation for the sin of abortion in the USA in commemoration of the Supreme Court Decision Roe vs. Wade legalizing abortion in this country. Since Roe vs. Wade in 1973, over 70 mil-lion babies have been killed in their mother’s wombs!

A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a pray-er which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. --Pope Saint John Paul II,

    Evangelium Vitae, no. 100

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe for Life

Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of unborn children, we implore your intercession for every child at risk of abortion. Help expectant parents to welcome from God the priceless gift of their child’s life. Console parents who have lost that gift through abortion, and lead them to forgiveness and healing through the Divine Mercy of your Son. Teach us to cherish and to care for family and friends

until God calls them home. Help us never to see others as burdens. Guide our public officials to de-fend each and every human life through just laws. Inspire us all to bring our faith into public life, to speak for those who have no voice. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who is Love and

  • ST. ANTHONY THE ABBOT - January 17

Anthony "the Great", the "Father of Monks", ranks with those saints whose life exer-cised a profound influence upon succeed-ing generations. He was born in Middle Egypt (about 250) of distinguished parents. After their untimely deaths, he dedicated himself wholly to acts of mortification. One day while in church he heard the words of the Gospel: "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor" (Matt. 19:21). It seemed as if Christ had spoken to him personally, giving a command he must obey. Without delay he sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and went into the desert (about 270). When overcome by fatigue, his bed was the hard ground. He fasted rigorously, ate only bread and salt, and drank only water. Nor would he take food before sun-down; at times he passed two days without any nourish-ment. Often, too, he spent whole nights in prayer. The saint suffered repeatedly from diabolical attacks, but these merely made him more steadfast in virtue. He would encourage his disciples in their struggle with the devil with such words: "Believe me; the devil fears the vigils of pious souls, and their fastings, their voluntary poverty, their loving compassion, their humility, but most of all their ardent love of Christ our Lord. As soon as he sees the sign of the Cross, he flees in terror." He died in 356 on Mount Kolzin by the Red Sea, 105 years old. A year later his friend, the fearless bishop and con-fessor St. Athanasius, wrote his biography, which for cen-turies became the classic handbook of ascetics. As seen by St. Anthony, the purpose of asceticism is not to de-stroy the body but to bring it into subjection, re-establishing man's original harmonious integrity, his true God-given nature. St. Anthony lived in solitude for about twenty years. "His was a perfectly purified soul. No pain could annoy him, no pleasure bind him. In him was neither laughter nor sadness. The sight of the crowd did not trouble him, and the warm greetings of so many men did not move him. In a word, he was thoroughly immune to the vanities of the world, like a man unswervingly governed by reason, es-tablished in inner peace and harmony." Here are a few of his famous sayings to monks. "Let it be your supreme and common purpose not to grow weary in the work you have begun, and in time of trial and afflic-tion not to lose courage and say: Oh, how long already have we been mortifying ourselves! Rather, we should daily begin anew and constantly increase our fervor. For man's whole life is short when measured against the time to come, so short, in fact, that it is as nothing in com-parison with eternity. . . . Therefore, my children, let us persevere in our acts of asceticism. And that we may not become weary and disheartened, it is good to meditate on the words of the apostle: 'I die daily.' If we live with the picture of death always before our eyes, we will not sin. The apostle's words tell us that we should so awaken in the morning as though we would not live to evening, and so fall asleep as if there were to be no awakening. For our life is by nature uncertain and is daily meted out to us by Providence. If we are convinced of this and live each day as the apostle suggests, then we will not fall into sin; no desire will enslave us, no anger move us, no treasure bind us to earth; we will await death with un-fettered hearts."

    EDWARD J. HAWKINS

Age 72 of Brooklyn, died Wednes-day, December 30, 2020. Born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Joseph and Irene Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Hawkins. Edward is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Carmela. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Diana Hawkins of Canton, Ohio and brother-in-law Victor Noce of Smithtown, New York. He has many nieces and nephews, including : Joe (Lore Hawkins, Andrew (Tara Hawkins, Stephanie (Mike) Hawkins-Flanagan, and Patrick (Crystal How-kins. He was a great-uncle to Nathan, Hailey, Ethan, Zachary, Alexander, Riley, Mackenzie, Julian and Liam Hawkins and 26 nieces and nephews in the Noce Family. He was extremely influential and in-strumental in each of their lives.

Edward was a graduate of Bishop Loughlin memorial High School in Brooklyn and went on to obtain a bach-elor’s degree from Pace University in New York City. His profession was an accountant but he was most known for his involvement with the rejuvenation of American girl singing groups of the 50s helping others find their talent and involvement in the Catholic Church. Many were fortunate to have Edward and Carmela design and orchestrate the decorating of var-ious Churches throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. He was a devout Catholic who was fundamental to restoring lost tradition and promoting revitalization of the Traditional Latin Mass. Edward served as past Grand Knight of the Regina Coeli Knights of Columbus, an honor which he treasured. You could always find him at Mass with a rosary in hand.

Edward’s love for New York was infectious and he was happy to introduce many to its great qualities. He could guide anyone through the city from any location, all you had to do was call. Many were amazed at his ability to recall numbers and events with ease. He was a great conversationalist who used much emotion and inflection with a remarka-ble laugh. To say we will miss him is an understate-ment. He touched so may lives and we are all bet-ter that he touched part of ours.

On Saturday, January 30 at 1:00 p.m. here at Holy Innocents there will be a Months' Mind Solemn High Requiem Mass for the happy repose of the soul of Edward Hawkins, followed by absolution at the catafalque.

Many thanks to the parishioners who contributed to having Gregorian Masses offered for Edward. They will be offered at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy beginning on May 1 and a Vigil Light will be lit there for him as well.

We love people and are grateful for our real estate business. Please call/email so we can listen to your real estate needs and together discuss a plan of action for your desire to purchase and/or sale. We could meet via Zoom and/or meet safely with masks/distance at your residence or elsewhere. We are 100% communicative, excellent listeners, careful, very caring, respect-ful, diligent, creative, friendly, and highly experienced. We would like to donate a percentage of our commission to Holy Innocents Church. All would be discussed, put in email and writing upon agreement to work with one another.
