Generosity.

The theme of this year’s book brings to mind the great people who have touched our lives through an overwhelming desire to do right and be generous — especially Father Angelo D’Agostino, humanitarian, crusader, and most importantly, friend.

Patty and I met Father DAG in 1995. He was determined and persuasive, but at the same time he was one of the most generous individuals the world has ever had walk its paths.

Father DAG, along with Sister Mary Owens, started Nyumbani Orphanage in Kenya to save babies who were being abandoned. Some were buried from the neck down along the river’s edge in the hope that someone would come across them and take care of them. That someone was Father DAG.

Father DAG spread his spirit of generosity to all he encountered. Starting with little more than faith, his experience helping children has lead to Nyumbani developing into the largest intergenerational village in the world.

Nobody was immune to his spirit of generosity. He even talked Pope John Paul II into donating all proceeds from a Vatican stamp sale to Nyumbani Village.

A few years later Patty and I realized the impact Father DAG’s mission had on us. During one of our return trips to Nyumbani, Sister Mary Owens set up a special welcome ceremony in our honor. We turned to see more than 300 beautiful smiling children, each glowing with their own spirit of generosity.

Page 7: Foundations

Today, Nyumbani Village is home to more than 800 children. While Father DAG is no longer with us, his spirit and legacy of generosity lives on in everyone fortunate to meet him.

Patty and I feel truly blessed to have worked alongside wonderfully generous people like Father DAG and Sister Mary Owens. Time and distance cannot diminish the inspiration they provide our families, businesses, and community.

With support from donors, business associates, friends, and families, Make A Mark Foundation can spread our spirit of generosity. Together we are helping make a difference.

As we enter the season of giving and open our hearts to celebrations of religions throughout the world, may we find time to embrace diversity and be generous to all those around us.

Generosity is not about recognition; sometimes it is better to be

The only way to find out is to try.
