Preview Foundation Stone #3: Saving Faith

1. Jesus came to earth to bring us the Good News.

2. By faith, we believe that Jesus paid the price for our sins.

3. By faith, Abraham was made righteous before God.

4. That is why Abraham is called the Father of Our Faith.

5. Doubt is the opposite of faith, and is the normal condition.

6. There are many things that we believe but can’t see.

7. It’s good to believe in spiritual things that can’t be seen.

8. Believing in Jesus means trusting Him and what He says.

9. It’s by believing in Jesus that we are set free from sin.

Q1:

The first reason Jesus came to earth was to get people to repent. What was the second reason?

Page 6: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q1: The first reason Jesus came to earth

was to get people to repent. What was the second reason?

A1: Jesus came to call people to repentance and get them to believe in the Gospel (the Good News).

R1: Mark 1:14,15

Page 7: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Mark 1:14,15 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Q2:

Realizing that we are hopeless sinners, and that the Law can't save us since it only shows us how sinful we are, how can we come to a holy God?

Page 9: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q2: Realizing that we are hopeless sinners,

and that the Law can't save us since it only shows us how sinful we are, how can we come to a holy God?

A2: By faith. We are made right by believing in what Jesus did for us: He took our penalty when he died for us.

R2: Romans 3:28 and Galatians 2:16

Page 10: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works prescribed by the law. Galatians 2:16 yet we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ. We, too, have believed in Christ Jesus so that we might be justified by the faith of Christ and not by the works of the law, for no human being will be justified by the works of the law.

Q3:

When did God start accepting people who had faith? After Jesus came back to life?

Page 12: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q3: When did God start accepting people who had faith? After Jesus came back to life?

A3: Long before then. Back when He called out Abraham to be the father of His favorite nation, God made His choice based on a man's faith.

R3: Galatians 3:6-9 and Genesis 12:1-4

Page 13: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Galatians 3:6,7 In the same way, Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." You see, then, that those who have faith are Abraham's real descendants.

Genesis 12:1-4 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. . . . and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." So Abram went,

Page 14: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q4:

What is Abraham's nickname, and why?

Page 15: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q4: What is Abraham's nickname, and why?

A4: Christians and Jews call Abraham the "Father of our faith" because he is the one who first believed what God told him strong enough to produce children of faith.

R4: Romans 4:13,16

Page 16: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Romans 4:16 Everything depends on having faith in God, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to the doer of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

Page 17: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q5:

What is the opposite of faith? And where does that thing come from? Is it OK?

Page 18: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q5: What is the opposite of faith? And where does that thing come from? Is it OK?

A5: Doubt. If nobody lied, we could believe everything, but there are liars in this world, and they also have a father. We doubt. It's normal. But who wants to be normal? I want to live forever and be filled with the power of God. Doubting keeps us in the natural world. That does not please God.

R5: John 8:43,44 and Mark 11:22-24 and Hebrews 11:6

Page 19: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

John 8:43,44 . . . You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Page 20: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Mark 11:22-24 And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Hebrews 11:6 Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him.

Page 21: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q6:

What natural things do you believe without seeing?

Page 22: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q6: What natural things do you believe without seeing?

A6: Is the world round? Are there atoms? Did the Big Bang happen? Does 2+4=6, really? Does E=mc2? Do germs cause sickness and disease? What is qi? Is "8" lucky? Is it always safe to cross a road on a green light? Do soldiers obey the words of their officers?

R6: Luke 7:2-9, John 3:12

Page 23: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Luke 7:2-10 Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. . . And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." . . When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

Page 24: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

Page 25: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q7:

What are some heavenly (supernatural) things that we can believe in?

Page 26: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q7: What are some heavenly (supernatural) things to believe in?

A7: That Jesus is God. That he died, was buried and rose again on the third day. That our sins can be forgiven by the death of Jesus Christ and that we can live forever in the presence of the Holy God, our loving heavenly Father.

R7: John 3:16 and I Corinthians 15:3-6

Page 27: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1 Corinthians 15:3-6 For I passed on to you the most important points of what I received: Christ died for our sins in keeping with the Scriptures, he was buried, he was raised on the third day in keeping with the Scriptures-and is still alive!- and he was seen by Cephas, and then by the twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 brothers at one time .

Q8:

What does it mean to "believe in him", Jesus Christ?

Page 29: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q8: What does it mean to "believe in him", Jesus Christ?

A8: In this world, when you meet people, do you immediately trust them? No. You don't trust that person until you know more about them. "Believing in" Jesus Christ means knowing what he said and completely trusting that every word is true.

R8: John 14:6

Page 30: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Page 31: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q9:

If you believe in Jesus Christ, then what will He do for you?

Page 32: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q9: If you believe in Jesus Christ, then what will He do for you?

A9: First, he will set you free. Then, you can have anything you want, if you ask for it in the name of Jesus Christ. 100% of your prayers can be answered.

R9: Luke 4:18 and John 14:12

Page 33: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Luke 4:18 (Jesus) "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set oppressed people free,

John 14:12-14 "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Page 34: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q10:

What's the difference between Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father?

Page 35: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q10: What's the difference between

Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father?

A10: There is no difference. They are one and the same. God, through Jesus, bought peace with us.

R10: John 14:8-11 and Colossians 1:19,20

Page 36: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

John 14:8-11 Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

Page 37: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Colossians 1:19,20 For God was pleased to have all of his fullness live in him (Jesus). Through him he also reconciled all things to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, thus making peace through the blood of his cross.

Page 38: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q11:

How do we believe in Jesus?

Page 39: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q11: How do we believe in Jesus?

A11: Hear the facts, believe them in your heart, and confess them with your mouth.

R11: Romans 10:8-11

Page 40: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Romans 10:8-11 But what does it say? "The message is near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart."

This is the message of faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For a person believes with his heart and is justified, and a person declares with his mouth and is saved.

For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be ashamed.”

Page 41: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q12:

Why was the Bible written?

Page 42: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

Q12: Why was the Bible written?

A12: The Bible helps us believe in Jesus Christ and, by faith, receive the precious gifts and promises that God has for us. (But faith in Christ spread for hundreds of years before the Bible, just by word-of-mouth.)

R12: John 20:29-31

Page 43: Foundation Stone 03: Saving Faith

John 20:29-31

Jesus said to him, "Is it because you have seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!"

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book. But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name.
