Now imagine what this new innovative technology means to you, your family members, friends and neighbors. The Villages® Regional Hospital is pleased to announce the development of a new Digital Vascular Surgery Suite with financial assistance from the Auxiliary Foundation. The concept to embark on this project was envisioned two years ago, when the new wing was added to the hospital. At that time, several large surgical suites were shelled-in, but not completed to allow for future expansion. One of these suites has now been dedicated to the installation of the new digital vascular surgery suite. The term “digital vascular” is used because the suite contains advanced c-arm vascular imaging equipment along with a computerized patient table, which can be moved in any direction. This enables the unit to be used for both the placement of minimally-invasive vascular stents, as well as for more traditional vascular procedures. The result of this technology is that it will provide the surgeon with 3-D imaging in real-time while a surgical case is underway. This allows the completion of an appropriate vascular procedure with more speed and precision than ever before. “We are proud to be installing the first hybrid unit of its kind in our region.” said Don Henderson, Central Florida Health President/CEO. Patients will benefit significantly from the addition of the new suite. Previously, many vascular surgeries required large incisions, but now these are done as minimally invasive procedures. “Instead of large incisions to repair damaged vessels, the surgeon operates through a few small openings,” said Ann Keyes, Director of TVRH Preoperative Services. Other benefits to the patient include less radiation used during procedures, shorter hospital stays, less pain and faster recovery time. “It means patients can get back to their normal activities as quickly as possible,” added Ann. This year, the Auxiliary Foundation is raising funds to help make this much needed technology a reality for our community. Imagine a state-of-the art surgery suite right here in The Villages.

Our Mission Statement To raise funds and create awareness

of the services which our hospital provides to maintain and improve

the quality of patient care.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

JEANNIE ROGALEAUXILIARY FOUNDATION WELCOMES NEW MEMBER

The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation has one principal role—to raise funds in support of The Villages® Hospital. And that objective was in full view during this year’s Hearts for Our Hospital Gala.

During the Gala the Auxiliary Foundation presented two checks totaling $600,000 to the hospital to help defray the cost of its exciting new Digital Vascular Surgery Suite. In addition, over $100,000 was raised during the Live Auction and a voluntary solicitation at the end of the evening that will also be dedicated to the project. This $2 million facility will be the only one of its kind in central Florida, and will greatly enhance and modernize the vascular surgeries performed at The Villages® Regional Hospital.

The Gala continues to be the premier charity event in The Villages thanks to the hard work of the Gala Committee and volunteers. I would like to extend a special thank you to Diane Kupchak, Foundation board

member, for her leadership as chairperson of the Gala.

Of course, the staff and volunteers of the Foundation devote their energies to many other activities beyond fundraising. At this writing, our Scholarship Committee is fully engaged in selecting candidates (high school seniors and hospital team members) for more than $100,000 in scholarship awards.

In addition, our new program of informational seminars continues its successful run. Thus far, six seminars on a variety of subjects ranging from financial do’s and don’ts to assisted living choices to end-of-life decisions, have been conducted, and five more are scheduled for the remainder of the year.

The first six months of the fiscal year have been highly successful, and we look forward to building on that momentum. It’s only through the financial and volunteer support of all of you that your Foundation will continue to expand its impact on the hospital and the community as a whole.

Jeannie Rogale is an exemplary volunteer and a familiar face at the hospital and The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. Recently, she was elected President of TVRH Auxiliary and is one of the newest members of the Auxiliary Foundation Board. Jeannie joined the Auxiliary in 2003 and has been working with the Auxiliary Foundation for many years on their annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala. “It is a lot of work and I look forward to it every year,” said Jeannie.

As a volunteer Jeannie has worked in many departments of the hospital including the Volunteer Placement Office, the Surgical Waiting Room and the Infusion Department where she served as the Volunteer Department Chair for eight years. Jeannie assumed the TVRH Auxiliary President position in December fulfilling the previous president’s term and was then elected for a full term in February. She continues to

volunteer in the Emergency Department and the Day Captain’s office.

Her willingness to work wherever she is needed has turned into a real asset for Jeannie. She knows many of the 900 plus volunteers in the organization that she now presides over. It also helped her establish one of her goal’s as president. “I would like to see all of us working together on cross-training,” said Jeannie. While recruiting more volunteers is always important, Jeannie plans to institute a cross-training initiative for the current volunteers. Training volunteers to work in multiple departments will prove to be a huge advantage when filling last-minute openings in the department schedules.

Jeannie is thankful every day for her decision to become a member of the Auxiliary, and states, “I wanted to give back and to help other people.” Having been a volunteer for fifteen years, Jeannie says of the hospital, “This is home and it is family. I feel needed and really enjoy being involved.”

HEARTS FOR OUR HOSPITAL GALA“And the Beat Goes On . . .” was the theme of the 12th Annual Hearts for our Hospital Gala held in February. It was a tremendous success with over 400 guests attending the black tie fundraiser hosted by The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. “We are pleased to announce that the Gala raised over $400,000 in net proceeds,” said Foundation President Dick Campbell. “The funds will be used to further the mission of the Auxiliary Foundation to improve the quality of patient care.”

Attendees had an evening full of activities. In addition to dining and dancing, there was a silent auction during the cocktail hour with almost 200 items for bid. Following dinner there was a live auction which included a few surprises. Villages

Golf Cars generously donated a Stampede 900 ATV to be included in the list of items to be auctioned. Fernando Varela, who contributed a private performance as an auction item, appeared at the Gala to perform for the audience. A seven-week old Goldendoodle worked the crowd before being auctioned to a very happy new family. “He really became the star of the show,” said Diane Kupchak, Gala Co-Chair and Auxiliary Foundation Board member, referring to the cute, cuddly puppy.

Nearly 100 volunteers participated in setting up and working the Gala. Diane said that people keep thanking and congratulating her for such a great event. “I always tell them an event like this takes a Village and we are so fortunate to have such a great village of volunteers.”

YE’ OLDE THRIFT SHOPPE TREE DEDICATIONVolunteers of The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation were honored at a special celebration in January. A majestic oak tree, that is over 200 years old, was dedicated to all of the Auxiliary members for their volunteer service to the community. Lady Lake Mayor Jim Richards read a proclamation stating, “Time is different for a tree. It is not measured in hours or days. Sometimes not even in years. Like most of us, a tree has little control over when its existence will end. Disease, drought and progress can easily terminate the tree’s growth. This is reason enough to celebrate when a tree endures over centuries.”

Today there are over 900 members in the Auxiliary of which 172 are volunteers at Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe where the tree is located. The tree sits on land that was recently purchased by the Auxiliary Foundation for parking expansion and future growth of the thriving boutique thrift store.

Rena Marchand, chair of the thrift shop volunteers, accepted the proclamation and presided over the unveiling of the plaque which is at the entrance of the park-like setting surrounding the tree. The plaque reads: “Ye Olde Tree. This tree is dedicated to all the Auxiliary Volunteers who, like this tree, have shown

strength and grace over the years.  Our volunteers are the roots supporting all members of our charitable community.”

Rena noted that Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe opened with 42 volunteers a decade ago and has grown every year in terms of sales and volunteers needed. “We are like family,” said Rena. “We really know and take care of each other.” She continued, “our volunteers provide a great service, and in addition they get to enjoy the camaraderie of working together.”

TVRH Foundation Board Member Roy Smith supervised the land purchase project which included the tree. When an arborist studied the tree, it was determined that the 200 - 250 year old tree was a healthy specimen and should continue to flourish. “We decided to dedicate the tree to the volunteers to show our gratitude and appreciation for all their tireless work,” said Roy. “They are the driving force in our community.” Following the dedication ceremony, guests were treated to lunch provided by Insight Credit Union; it was prepared and served by the company’s employees.

If you would like more information about Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe including how to become a volunteer, contact Rena Marchand at [email protected].

2017 BIG BIKE WEEKEND TEAM WINNERSThe winners of the competitive Cycling Teams from the Big Bike Weekend in November received their trophies at the Hearts for our Hospital 2018 Gala. The traveling team trophies are awarded to the winning teams within eight different categories. Gerry Lachnicht, a principal with Sabal Trust said his team really enjoyed participating and he summed up the feelings of his team saying, “It is a community event to support the local hospital and as we are also part of the community we wanted to show our support.” Gerry, an avid cyclist, rode the 100 mile route known as the Full Arrest. Lachnicht added that like Sabal Trust, The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation is a long-term planner. He stated that is another reason Sabal Trust thought their participation in Big Bike Weekend was a good fit.

The Beacon College team, comprised of students and staff, won in the college’s category and definitely plan to participate again in 2018. “We loved it. It is all we are talking about,” said Steven McDaniels, Director of Fitness and Recreation at Beacon College, “We will be back this year with an even bigger team.” Steven said that he really appreciated the 10-mile route so that people who were interested but had no experience riding could participate. “We had some people ride the 64-mile route, but having that 10-mile route allowed some new riders who had never cycled before to participate.”

Karen Hughes, leader of the Congregational Team at New Covenant Methodist Church, says their team will also participate again. Karen said that when they first signed up she was thinking of the physical benefits, but after becoming involved they really appreciated being part of a community event that was designed to help the

local residents. “Supporting the hospital is a good cause that benefits everyone in our area. “We are looking forward to the 2018 Big Bike Weekend.”

Norm Davis rode in the Big Bike Weekend representing the Rotary Club of the Villages – Evening, but also found himself as a member of the Sumter Landing Bicycle Club, volunteering as a Ride Leader. “It came to my attention that they were in need of Ride Leaders for the 10-mile route and I was happy to go the shorter distance to help out,” said Norm, who is a qualified Ride Leader. “I certainly plan to ride in the next one representing the Rotary, but will always help out where needed, probably as a Ride Leader.”

The Cycling Trophies were awarded to the following winners:Health Services – Florida Cancer Specialists

HOSPITAL TOURS

The Bob Marley tribute band, “John Truth and Reflexx,” is set to take the stage on Saturday, May 5. Orthopedic Surgeon John Williams, M.D. is the featured group’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist. With the success of last year’s show, the band is moving to a larger venue and will perform at the Savannah Center.

“People started calling in January about tickets for the show,” said Dr. Williams, Director of Total Joint Replacement at the Advanced Orthopedic Institute of The Villages. New songs and instruments are being added this year including a percussionist playing the congas and timbales. He continued, “This is going to be an energy-packed, two-hour, non-stop show.”

A life-long Bob Marley fan, Dr. Williams began performing with the Reflexx band when he lived in Philadelphia. Now that he is in Florida, members of the band travel here to perform special concerts with their friend “John Truth”. “The band is really pumped. They are looking forward to coming down to Florida to do this show,” Dr. Williams exclaimed. “We are really looking forward to bringing the energy of Bob Marley to The Villages.”

The concert is open to everyone. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and can be purchased at Dr. Williams’ office in the Sharon L. Morse Medical Center, 1400 U.S. Highway 441 North, Suite 552 or by calling 352-751-2862. Central Florida Health team members and volunteers may purchase one ticket at half price. Payment for tickets is cash or check. If there any available tickets the day of the show they can be purchased at the door for $30.00. Given the crowd at last year’s event, advance purchase is recommended. Proceeds from the performance benefit The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation.

CABARET SHOWCASE OF TALENT

THE CONVERSATION PROJECT

Page 5

The 12th Annual Cabaret at the Savannah Center in January was a sensation! Played for over 800 people in two performances, this popular show features top talent (mostly Villagers). The Cabaret has certainly become a tradition in The Villages. “I think this show was the best ever,” said Auxiliary Foundation President Dick Campbell. Over the years the Cabaret has raised over $120,000 for The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. This year, the proceeds of over $11,000 will be used to help fund the Auxiliary Foundation’s projects, including scholarships

for area students planning careers in the medical field.

Ray Leggiero, producer and artistic director, has been at the helm for every one of the twelve performances. He describes the show as one of the premier concerts featuring Villagers. “The performers and production team donate all their time and the show is something really special each year,” said Ray.

The final Live @ Five seminar in the spring 2018 series will be held Wednesday, April 18 at 5:00 p.m. at TVRH East Campus, 2nd Floor Classroom 1. Sponsored by TVRH Auxiliary Foundation, Live @ Five is a series of informational seminars presented by industry leaders in health care and wealth management. The seminars are hosted in a casual environment and include a light dinner and time for audience discussion.

The topic of the April seminar is The Conversation Project. Led by Phyllis Baum, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer and Beth Jernigan, Cancer Program Director at Central Florida Health, the purpose of “The Conversation Project” is to ensure everyone’s end-of-life wishes are expressed and respected.

“Statistics show that more than 50% of people can’t participate in their own end-of- life issues,” said Beth. “Studies also show that although 90% of people think it is important to have a Living Will in place, only 30% of people actually do it.” Beth continued, “It is more than the paper documents; it is a conversation you should have with your loved ones and family. The Conversation Project helps prepare people to have these dialogs. We offer a very practical how-to approach that leaves people feeling much more confident when talking about end-of-life.”

If you would like to attend the seminar, call the Auxiliary Foundation office at (352) 751-8871 to make a reservation. All Live @ Five events are offered at no charge, however reservations are required. Seating is limited.

The Live @ Five will break for the summer and resume again in September. Stay tuned to the next edition of the Foundation News for information on the Fall series.

SCHOLARSHIPSPONSORS

In 2017, the Auxiliary Foundation Board approved a contribution of $100,000 to establish an Endowment Fund. To date the fund has grown considerably thanks to a $25,000 gift from a donor who cares deeply about the role the hospital plays in our community – past, present and future. The Endowment will continue to flourish through planned gifts from supporters of the hospital and the Auxiliary Foundation. These gifts can take the form of bequests, charitable gift annuities, appreciated securities, insurance policies, and appreciated real estate. Endowment donors are generally interested in leaving a legacy and providing for the long-term future of the organization they support. Donations to the fund are invested by professional money managers and only the income from those investments may be used.

GEORGE & GLORIA COUNSELMAN

Page 6

George and Gloria Counselman’s relationship with The Villages® Regional Hospital began with Gloria’s trip to the emergency room. “I was admitted as a patient and I really liked the guy who brought me the newspaper in the morning,” said Gloria. From their positive experience at the hospital, a

bond was formed. Today, Gloria and George are not only giving of their time as volunteers, they are also financial contributors to the hospital.

Their volunteer experience started by working a typical four-hour weekly shift. Now, you may see them nearly every day as they volunteer in multiple capacities, collectively, logging over 4,000 hours per year. Gloria works in Patient Care, the Emergency Department and the Volunteer Placement Office as well as oversees the Volunteer Annual Training Program. George also works in the Volunteer Placement Office and the Emergency Department alongside Gloria, in addition to the Auxiliary Foundation Office. He also has oversight of the Student Volunteer Program. In January, he accepted a position on the Auxiliary Foundation Board of Directors. At the 2017 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, the Counselmans received the President’s Award for outstanding volunteer service.

Volunteering where they see a necessity has always been part of their adult lives. “At the hospital there is a need for volunteers. The volunteers really work; they are not just for show,” said Gloria. “George and I put in a lot of hours, but we do it because we want to -- not because we have to, and that makes a big difference.”

While working in the hospital they became aware of the Auxiliary Foundation. They do their homework before donating financially to a charity. “The Foundation is a well-run organization. They don’t waste money,” says George, “They have their act together.” Referring to TVRH Auxiliary Foundation’s President Dick Campbell, George said, “Dick’s fiscal philosophy caught my attention. We knew they would be good stewards of our monetary contributions.”

While they are Room Naming Sponsors, you won’t see their name on the plaque; the donor is listed as “Anonymous”. “We like to be quiet donors,” said Gloria. “The hospital is so valuable to the community. We saw a need and wanted to support what others have so generously begun.”

Fred Robey’s life-long passion for reading, teaching and learning is what first brought him to The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. “I started out participating in the Scholarship Program,” said Fred. “And it just went on from there. For me it is about the people in an organization. All of my donations are based on people. It is the people that make things successful.” He knew President Dick Campbell and Senior Development Associate Cathy Reardon through Rotary International. “As I got

to know more of the Board Members and Auxiliary Foundation staff, I liked the enthusiasm everyone had for the hospital,” said Fred. His involvement continued and most recently he became a Room Naming Sponsor.

Born and raised in Pittsburg Fred has always been an avid reader, “I read my way through the entire local library.” After high school, Fred had a short stint in the Army and then a 32-year career with United Parcel Service (UPS). Starting in the mailroom, Fred retired from UPS as a District Controller. It was after he retired that he finished his college degree. “I wanted to prove I could do it, number one, but also I needed the degree to work internationally as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor.”

ESL has been a big part of his life in retirement. He started teaching in the Atlanta area and decided he wanted to work with students internationally. He has worked as a volunteer ESL instructor in Romania, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. This work led him to move to bigger projects, such as securing funding for libraries for towns and schools. He has personally supplied thousands of books d to fill these libraries. Fred became a Board Member of the Carpathian Foundation based in Hungary. He has reached out and helped individual students both here and abroad with their education. He doesn’t know exactly how many kids he has helped. “I don’t keep track, for me it is not about the numbers. When I see a need – I help if I can.”

FRED ROBEY

More than 3,000 people came out to enjoy the VHA’s second annual Country Western Hoedown in January. This year’s event was an even bigger success than the VHA’s first Hoedown in 2017. Commenting on the increased attendance, Fred Briggs VHA president said, “I was awash in smiling faces and happy comments all day long.”

Because of the success of the first Hoedown the VHA anticipated an increased attendance and they were ready. This year there was more of everything, more music, more entertainment, more children’s activities and more cowboy stews to taste. Enthusiastic attendees enjoyed all that the hoedown had to offer. Briggs said the VHA looks to make the Hoedown even bigger and better as they move forward. “We had over two hundred volunteers involved in the Hoedown, many of them were returning volunteers who helped out with the first event,” said Briggs. “We certainly couldn’t present this event without them.”

Proceeds from the Hoedown benefit the VHA Community Foundation, Helping Hands and The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. The VHA, supporters of the hospital, became a Room Naming Sponsor in 2016.
