matters most,” said Vicky McGrath, Cancer Center director. “We are excited to bring this technology to our patients. It truly will make a difference to individual outcomes and our ability to serve more patients at the Cancer Center.”

The equipment purchase would include:

• Real-time Position Management (RPM) System: Helps physicians deliver the optimal doses of radiation with greater accuracy and protects surrounding healthy tissue from unnecessary treatment.

• MapCHECK/Matrix X: Provides precise dosage calculations more efficiently, allowing physicians to treat more patients.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

“Our sponsors are what makes the BIG HEARTS tournament such a success year after year,” said Tina Long, development

officer with the Foundation. “Their generous support means state-of-the art cancer care is available close to home, giving patients more flexibility in managing home, work and other activities while receiving treatment.”

Rick and Sue Wienckowski are the honorary co-chairs for the 18th annual event. The tournament’s presenting sponsor is Hospital Assistance Program, with Goodell, Stratton, Edmonds and Palmer LLP and Lockton Companies serving as title sponsors.

Percentage Giving Puts Family FirstNaming the Stormont Vail Foundation as a beneficiary in your will is a simple way to support the future of quality, compassionate care in northeast Kansas.

But maybe you’ve hesitated because you’re unsure about how much to give because you don’t want to risk that your charitable gift could outweigh the well-being of your family. Fortunately, there’s a solution.

Instead of a fixed amount, consider gifting a percentage of your estate or specific assets. That way, gifts to loved ones and to charities remain proportional – no matter how your estate fluctuates.

Here are three simple ways to put family first while continuing to care for future generations:

• Gift a percentage of your estate to the Stormont Vail Foundation in your will.

• Leave the Foundation a percentage of your residual estate (the portion of your estate that remains after all other obligations are satisfied).

• Name the Foundation as a beneficiary of a percentage of your life insurance policy or retirement account.

Contact Amy Burns at 785-354-6851 if you have any questions about naming us as a beneficiary.

Program Honors Nursing ExcellenceU.S. Bank, Security Benefit, and Dean and Pam Ferrell have teamed up to sponsor Stormont Vail Health’s 2018 Excellence in Nursing program. The aim of the program is to enhance efforts to recruit, retain and recognize nursing staff in a field with extraordinary responsibilities.

“Stormont Vail currently provides a wide array of services and is committed to meeting the future health care needs of northeast Kansans,” said Carol Perry, vice president and chief nursing officer. “These services depend on our ability to attract and keep highly trained, professional nursing staff.”

At the same time, notes Perry, competition for nurses is expected to escalate as the nation faces an estimated one-million registered nurse openings by 2024.

“We work to promote and provide a healthy, supportive environment for nursing staff that encourages leadership and professional growth,”

Perry said. “The Excellence in Nursing Program is a public way we celebrate the best of care. We truly appreciate our sponsors’ and the Foundation’s commitment to this program.”

The Excellence in Nursing Program encompasses the Excellence in Nursing Awards, the DAISY Foundation awards, and other efforts to distinguish and reward exceptional care. The program helps support Stormont Vail’s Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet status is the highest and most prestigious distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and high-quality patient care.

Donations Fund ProjectsThanks to donor support, the Stormont Vail Foundation was able to invest nearly $188,000 in equipment, facility upgrades and professional development at Stormont Vail Health during the first half of fiscal year 2018.

Funded requests include:

Giraffe OmniBed/Neonatal Intensive Care ($78,768.56) – The Giraffe OmniBed is the unit of choice for low-birthweight infants. It pairs an incubator and radiant warmer to create a seamless healing microenvironment for these babies. The Foundation purchased two of these units in the NIC.

Legacy Teaching Doll/Child Life Services ($4,190) – Stormont Vail’s Child Life Specialists will use these specialty dolls and real medical equipment to effectively teach pediatric patients and their families about their diagnosis and care.

Continuing Education Workshop/Kanza Park ($4,730) – Rather than sending one or two therapists for training in the Sahrmann Method, the Foundation funded a two-day workshop for some 20 therapy staff in Topeka. The training focused on diagnosing and treating movement impairments in the core and back.

Blood Pressure Machine at Lebo Library/Cotton O’Neil Clinic Lebo ($8,000) – Because there was no place for Lebo residents to go to check their blood pressure, Lebo staff requested funding to install a machine in the Lebo library. Now area patients can stay on top of their numbers and get information about Stormont Vail and Cotton O’Neil Clinic services.

Dance Marathon Raises $15,016Kansas State University’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon wasn’t just the inaugural effort for the Wildcats, but also the first Children’s Miracle Network event to benefit Stormont Vail Health.

When K-State found out that they were the only school in The Big 12 Conference that hadn’t hosted a Dance Marathon, they knew they had to join the movement. A planning team was recruited and kick-off event hosted in the spring of 2017 with the goal of holding their first Dance Marathon in 2018.

Along the way, Stormont Vail joined CMN as the Network’s region hospital. Despite the transition, the team remained committed to its purpose and with the support of other campus organizations, sponsors and fellow Miracle Network Dance Marathon programs, K-State held its first event on April 7.

Planning is already underway for the 2019 K-State Dance Marathon and the team is ready to make even more miracles next year!
