DAY

Thank You Michael Weinper Long time member Michael Weinper (right of photo) has stepped down from the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation Board. Weinper, a proud Valley College alumnus, began with the Foundation Board in 1998. He served two terms as President from 2003 to 2006. During his tenure, he saw the Foundation’s assets go from just below $300,000 to $1 million. He also instituted the much needed investment policy to allow the Foundation to incorporate a sound endowment vehicle. In the four years he was president, the Foundation went from having two endowments to eleven. After his tenure as president, Weinper chaired the Investment Committee to monitor the Foundation’s portfolio performance. “While I depart from the Board, I will always continue to stay true to Valley College and this Foundation, and support it .”

The Very First Student Returns Lloyd S. Jones (pictured in the center) was the very first Valley College student to register and enroll in 1949 when the college opened its doors. He returned to Valley College in April of 2013 after 64 years to address the students at the Deans’ Reception.

Mr. Jones still has his Associated Student Organization card and it was in his wallet when he came to visit. He informed the students that he majored in Advertising Art and mi-nored in Spanish. He started the first Spanish Club on campus and was the photographer for the football team.

After Valley College, Mr. Jones eventually went on to become a highly respected aviation artist, well known in the airplane model industry as a researcher, author, artist and avid modeler. While working for Revell, a well-known plastic model company; he designed and developed model kits and wrote the historical accounts for instruction sheets. Mr. Jones has and continues to illustrate aviation books and magazines.

Saying Goodbye to Art Ginsburg Los Angeles Valley College and its Foundation lost a dear friend in alumnus Art Ginsburg, who passed away in late July. Ginsburg was a major supporter of Valley College. He sat on the Foun-dation’s Board for ten years. He was involved with student scholarships and the Ginsburg family has awarded scholarships to twenty-two LAVC students. As the owner of Art’s Deli in Studio City, he hosted a number of luncheons and meetings for the Foundation at the Deli. He often mused, “the Deli is a great place to make business deals so why not fundraising deals for the college Foundation?” Art was proud to have attended Valley College. After finishing a Business exam in 1957, he and his wife Sandy bought the Deli the following day. Even in passing, Art continues to support Valley College. His family asked that in lieu of flowers and gifts, that donations be made in his memory to the LAVC Foundation. We will miss you Art!

Legacy Society Off to Good Start!

3 Greetings from Dr. A. Susan Carleo, President of LAVC It’s time to go back to school. For educators and students alike that thought evokes a sense of anticipation and excitement. We are beginning a new teaching/learning cycle. We are full of hope about what the year will bring. For Valley College the new academic year promises another round of budget reductions and the prospect of turning away more students. Without the LAVC Founda-tion the struggle for many of our students would be even greater. The scholarships awarded on behalf of our generous donors really do make a difference. Despite our continuing hardships, 2013-2014 promises to be rewarding and productive thanks to our continuing spirit of excellence. Valley College, with the help and support of our Foundation, is here to make a lasting difference in our community.

A. Susan Carleo, Ph.D. President

This past year, the LAVC Foundation Legacy Society was established and welcomed its founding members which included Rosalyn Shostak Heyman, Joseph B. Nordmann, Sharon J. Udkoff, Martin M. Cooper, and Cindy Sardo. These members have named the LAVC Foundation in their estate plans, notified the Foundation, and filled out the Legacy Society membership form.

The Legacy Society not only enables members to leave a lasting legacy at Valley College, they are forward thinking individuals who want to make sure that LAVC and its students are supported long after they are gone.

By becoming a member of the Legacy Society, you allow the Founda-tion to thank you now and not your executor.

If you have already named or plan to name the LAVC Foundation in your will or estate plans, please contact the LAVC Foundation at (818) 947-2618. A Legacy Society Membership Form will be sent to you so you may become a member immediately!

L-R: Exec Dir. Raul Castillo, President Sue Carleo, Legacy Society Founding member Rosalyn Shostak Heyman, and Foundation President Bob Oberstein

Thrilling Book & Signing!

Dr. Laurie Nalepa and Dr. Richard Pfefferman, authors of “The Murder Mystique,” had a book signing party at the LAVC Historical Museum in April. Approximately fifty peo-ple attended the party and proceeds from book sales ben-efited the LAVC Foundation.

$157K Awarded in Scholarships The LAVC Foundation distributed $157,000 in scholarships and awards to its students in fiscal year 2013.

In the past 10 years the LAVC Foundation has awarded a total of $1.2 million in scholarships. The success of the LAVC Foun-dation Scholarship program has been due in large measure to the support received from do-nors that include alumni, corporations, and faculty and staff. A number of endowed scholarships have also been estab-lished ensuring perpetual scholarship funding.

If you wish to establish a scholarship, please call the LAVC Foundation Office at (818) 947-2618.

Your Los Angeles Valley College Foundation was active in fiscal year 2013! It received a number of major gifts from gener-ous donors. It followed through to initiate programs and work towards playing a more significant role in the life of Los Angeles Valley College.

This past year, we received a very generous donation of $150,000 from Felix and Beverly Grossman. $115,000 was used to establish the Bruce Grossman Memorial Endowment in Music to benefit the Music Department. $35,000 was used to purchase equipment and supplies for the Commercial Music Program at Valley College. The Eli & Edythe Broad Foundation donated $50,000 to the Library Endowment this past year. To date, thanks to donations and investment revenue, the Library Endowment totals $197,000. Revenue from this endowment may be use for Library needs that include equipment, supplies, or services. Last-ly, Foundation Board member Eric Bubbers and his wife Sandra Welgreen pledged to donate $10,000 over the course of three years to the Art Department Endowment; part of this will be called the Bubbers & Welgreen Endowment.

Los Angeles Universal Preschool extended its grant to the LAVC Family Resource Center’s CAST Program through 2016. The pro-gram assists Child Development majors with academic and career advisement, mentoring, professional development, networking and host of other resources.

Various Foundation endowments have been hard at work. Reve-nue from endowments have allowed the Foundation to donate $40,000 directly to LAVC towards Media Arts, Engineering, Library, and the Museum.

Lastly, the Foundation distributed $157,000 in scholarships, awards and stipends to 277 students and distributed $635,000 to various campus programs and projects.

We thank you for continuing to support our Foundation. Your gen-erosity truly plays a hand assisting Valley College and our students!

Sincerely,

Raul Castillo Executive Director Los Angeles Valley College Foundation Class of 1988

Foundation Annual Report

I would like to thank all of you who have been so supportive of Los Angeles Valley College and our Foundation. When times were fiscally difficult, as they were last year, a number of you stepped up to the plate and offered your assistance in terms of finances and time. While the Governor’s Proposition 39 passed, I’m sure you will agree that our community colleges are not quite out of the woods.

Valley College and other community colleges continue to receive far less in state funding than the California State Universities and the Universities of California. Yet, it seems to me that community colleges like Valley have just as much impact in education and our community, if not more, than our “big brother institutions”. You have been important in addressing the needs of Valley College and our students. We are very grateful to you.

Our Foundation is going through some very positive changes. In the coming year I, along with Andrea Goldberg Kaufman and Pat Ballew, will retain our respective Foundation board positions as President, Vice President, and Secretary. Eric Bubbers becomes our new Treasurer and replaces Sharon Udkoff. Sharon, the Foundation’s Treasurer the past ten years, will continue as a board member. Thank you Sharon for your service as Treasurer! I also want to thank Michael Weinper, who has stepped down as a member of the Board after fifteen years. He was a past president during a very important transitional time for the Foundation. Michael will continue to support the Foundation because he says, “it’s a part of who I am.” Lastly, I want to convey my condolences to the Ginsburg family on the recent passing of Art Ginsburg. In some ways our board was a “work of Art” and we thank him for his astute counsel for the many years that he was a board member. Art supported Valley College in a tremendous way. He directly contributed to financially support students through scholarships. He also hosted countless numbers of luncheons and meetings at Art’s Deli – a restaurant he founded with his wife Sandy back in 1957. We will miss his humor, friendship and guidance.

As we embark on a new fiscal year, we ask you to continue to support the Foundation by donating to our annual fund or endowment. Establish a scholarship if you haven’t done so already. If you have established a scholarship, consider establishing another one! Please also consider Valley College in your estate plans. By doing so, you can become a member of our LAVC Legacy Society.

Thank you once again and “Go Monarchs!”

Sincerely,

Bob Oberstein President Los Angeles Valley College Foundation Class of 1968
