B. Additional placing requirements for the test fill section[,containing an admixture of sodium bentonite shall be as

follows.;

; r

1. Bentonite shall be distributed over unrutted material ;4

! to avoid pockets of concentrated bentonite in the i

! fill. Bentonite applied with a spreader shall be fspread with a fertilizer type spreader capable of con- '

trolling the rate of application and shall be applied,

' in two passes overlapping each other.,

1 initial soil moisture and the grade of bentonite. The ;

i speed of the mixer shall be controlled to minimi:e '

1 loss of bentonite in the atmosphere.

3. If a pug mill is substituted for the spreader and ;

mixer, the mixing shall depend on the soil type, [initial soil moisture and the grade of bentonite. '

Transfer of the bentonite / soil mixture onto the testpad shall be performed such that segregation is

,

minimized with the placed material subject to approval t

by the Contractor. The pug mill shall be operated to [minimi:e loss of bentonite into the atmosphere.

4. Soil moi.:ure content shall be less than the optimummoisture as determined by ASTM D698 before bentonitemay be placed. Water shall be added only after drymixing of soil and bentonite is complete. Materialwith an initial moisture content above optimum shallbe scarified to accelerate drying before bentonite isplaced. After soil and bentonite mixing is complete,

F water shall be added by methods which will provide amoisture content within 0 to plus 3 percent of theoptimum moisture content during the compactioneffort. Water shall be added and mixed in a mannerapproved by the Contractor which will provide uniformmoisture content throughout each lift to achieve thespecified density.

C. The radon barrier test fill shall be compacted as speci-fied in Section 02200 - Earthwork, but shall not be lessthan 95 percent for the base materials and shall bebetween 100 and 102 percent for the radon barriermaterials. The subgrade shall be compacted to a minimumof 90 percent prior to constructing the base pads.

D. Field Quality Control shall be as specified in Section02200 Earthwork, with the exception of the testing-

f requency which shall be as follows: The in-place density.

and moisture content tests will be done utilizing sand '

cone or nuclear methods to check the density, to assurethat densities do not exceed 102 percent for the radonbarrier materials. There shall be a minimum of two sandcone / nuclear density gage correlation tests performed perlift of material placed. The classification tests andgradation tests will be a minimum of two per lift for theradon barrier material prior to spreading and mixing ofbentonite and two per lift after placement and mixing ofbentonite. Testing of the characteristics of sodiumbentonite materials shall be in accordance with Recom'-monded Procedure 138 of the American Petroleum Instituteat a frequency to be determined by the Contractor.

E. Representative areas of the borrow source shall be placedand compacted on the radon barrier test fill. The maximumloose thickness of each lift shall be 9 inches forsoil-bentonite mixtures.

F. The final lift of the radon barrier test fill shall begraded and rolled with a smooth drum roller producing asmooth, level surface to facilitate permeability testsampling. The final elevation shall ensure that the testfill is a minimum of 2 feet thick radon barrier materialplus 7% bentonite, with each of the borrow areasrepresented.
