On first reading, Mr. Emerson’s observationseems clear enough. I suspect though he hadmore in mind than mere consciousness thatdarkness is passing into light. These nine littlewords have intrigued me for many years. I hopethey suggest something more for you as well, especially as they may relate to D&E.

It would seem that to be truly “awake” one mustbe aware not only of what’s happening, but openalso to new possibilities, even eager for thewonder and promise of what might potentiallyunfold. And if we’re alert and motivated we maypossess a willingness – even commitment – tomake the day count, and add up to somethingfar beyond even our highest dreams.

Throughout this issue of Forward, you will seethe heightened sense of energy and newpossibilities pervading the New Dawn at D&E.Everywhere there is a willingness – eveneagerness – by all who care deeply for the placeto do our own part in helping realize its fullpotential.

And what might that be? None of us has acorner on the answer, of course. That’s why weneed to hear your best thoughts of what ourpriorities and New Dawn possibilities should befor the long future. We really do want to hearfrom you. So please email your thoughts directlyto me at [email protected].

Meantime, we’ve got some immediate prioritiesand opportunities on which we need your urgenthelp: increasing enrollment, and gifts to the NewDawn Challenge (see page 10 for details). Weare making huge progress on the enrollmentfront, with applications for next Fall runningroughly 3 times that of either of the last twoyears.

This progress is due in large measure to the factthat those most serious about coming to D&Eoften have a personal connection with someonewho knows the College: a current or recentstudent, an alumnus or alumna, grateful parentswho have shared their enthusiasm. We inviteyou too to nominate at least one young man orwoman for consideration by our admission team.He or she might be a relative, a neighbor, amember of your church. We’ll follow-uppromptly and sensitively. And keep you posted.Just send their names and contact information tome at [email protected].

The other area where we need your immediatehelp is your gift to the New Dawn Challengethrough The D&E (Annual) Fund. We realizethese are tough times on us all. And we’re notasking you to be so generous as to deny yourselfor your loved ones necessities. But even in hardtimes we are enriched by and benefit from thosecauses and institutions that have touched ourlives. To the degree that D&E has been and issuch a factor in your life, we invite yourthoughtful and generous support. Whatever the amount, our three anonymous donors will add 50%.

A reporter called the other day from a statewidejournal with the query: “What’s behind the ‘newday’ at D&E?” My immediate response was thatfolks seem to have discovered that “D&E” standsfor more than “Davis and Elkins.” It also means“Discover Possibilities and Empower People.”Perhaps Mr. Emerson had that in mind as well.

Best regards,

In making the announcement, BoardChairman Paul Stirrup said, “Thisgenerous action comes at a perfect timein the life of the College. Building onthe solid financial and enrollment gainsof the past year, meeting this challengewill move us significantly ahead in ourcurrent five-year strategic plan. We areimmensely grateful for the generosity ofthese good friends and their confidencein the future of Davis & Elkins College.”

The three gifts, representing twofoundations and one couple, range from$500,000 to $1 million each. They willbe paid to the College as matching giftsare received from other donors. All newgifts received since July 1 will be eligiblefor the match.

But it’s an opportunity wecannot let go by. I have every confidenceour alumni, and friends in the largercommunity, will join in contributinggenerously and helping assure this “NewDawn” in the life of the College.”

Davis & Elkins College has been givennew visibility on Randolph Avenue, themain thoroughfare in Elkins.

Through a gift from the Myles FamilyFoundation, the corner property atRandolph Avenue and Sycamore Street, the site of Elkins Tire Company, hasbecome part of the D&E campus. Theproperty was once part of the originalGraceland estate of College co-founderHenry G. Davis.

June Myles said she hopes this action bythe Foundation will contribute to thearea’s attractiveness as a destination fortourism as well as for showcasing thebeauty of D&E’s campus and grounds.

“Over the years, I’ve noticed how theCollege and the beauty of Forest FestivalHill have been obscured by commercialproperties,” said Myles. “We have beenworking with the owner to acquire thebuilding, and we were able to reach anagreement.

“Given my family’s long ties with theElkins community and the surroundingforests, I am thrilled to help create agreen space within the city that will

complement the historic Iron Horsetriangle with its bronze statue of HenryG. Davis, as well as Davis MemorialPresbyterian Church. I hope ourFoundation’s gift can help restore thebeauty of that corner, which oncegreeted visitors to Elkins.”

Commenting on the close relationshipbetween D&E and the Elkinscommunity, Myles added, “The College, its administration, faculty and studentsare all an integral part of the fabric ofthe community, and this should helpbring their presence more to theforefront.”

College President G.T. “Buck” Smithsays demolition work and thedevelopment of a landscaping plan willbegin in the near future. “This far-sighted gift symbolizes the already closerelationship of the College and thecommunity, and will help make a morepositive impression on visitors to the cityand the campus. Thanks to thegenerosity of the Myles FamilyFoundation, the beauty of our City andCollege will both be greatly enhanced.”

Paul Stirrup, Chairman of D&E’s Boardof Trustees, accepted the gift on behalf ofthe College. Stirrup said the gift hastremendous potential for furthering theCollege’s ties to the community.

“The Board of Trustees is very grateful tothe Myles Family Foundation and to ourfellow trustee June Myles for having thevision and the courage to take thisgenerous step,” Stirrup said. “Weappreciate that June saw the value ofthis property in making D&E a moreprominent and attractive destination.Instead of being hidden from the mainElkins thoroughfare, the campus cannow be framed by a beautiful vista thatreflects the shared heritage of thecommunity and the College.”

An aerial photo from 1930 shows theboundaries of the Davis estate extendingall the way to Randolph Avenue as wellas North Randolph Avenue. A portionof the estate, which included GracelandMansion, was acquired by Davis &Elkins College in 1941, but theremaining grounds were broken up andsold by a business consortium that hadpurchased the estate in 1939.

The Davis & Elkins College men’s andwomen’s soccer teams finished strongthis season, led by two tightly knitgroups of seniors. Although both teamshad disappointing losses in the WVIACTournament Semi-Finals, the men andwomen finished the year with impressiverecords of 12 – 7 – 3 and 11 – 8,respectively. Senator fans packed thestands at Harpertown Field during homegames this fall, and it seemed that just asmany made the trip to rival schoolsAlderson-Broaddus and West VirginiaWesleyan, showing their Senator Spirit.

The Senator men’s team was led byseniors Aaron Edings (Odenton, MD),Matt Fannon (York, England) and MarkWood (Baltimore, MD). Both Edingsand Fannon received First-Team All-Conference honors, and Wood receivedSecond-Team All-Conference honors.Head Coach Mark Stollsteimer said, “Allthree were team leaders. We’ll miss theirleadership on the field.

“Both Aaron and Mark spent five yearshere, each sitting out one season due toinjury, showing their loyalty to theprogram. They both had stellar careersand received numerous honors. I givethem a lot of credit for giving up anotheryear of their lives for the program. Mattspent three years here, playing twoseasons, and received accolades throughthe roof. Matt battled injury this year, yet moved up front to striker and wasour leading goal scorer. He showed hispassion and desire for the game and the

team and showed what a quality playerhe was.

“All three of our seniors will be sorelymissed. They were the foundation of theteam and really helped start thisprogram. I hope that the boys that aremoving into leadership positions willcontinue this tradition that they setforth.”
