There is no power for change greater than a communityfocusing on what it cares about. After so many years offear-based, fractured relationships in our schools andcommunities, we need to work wholeheartedly on creatingnew levels of collaboration, respect, and possibility withinschools. There is no other way we can deal with the manyunending challenges and fears of this time. Fortunately, the simple process of good listening in conversations thatmatter offers a potent means to bring us back togetherand accomplish good work. Dr. Wheatley will describeexamples of how simple conversations that encouragereflection and clear thinking lead to extraordinaryoutcomes, including finding solutions to difficult problems, and finding each other as colleagues.

Margaret Wheatley is an internationally acclaimedspeaker and writer and president emerita of The BerkanaInstitute, a charitable global foundation that works inpartnership with diverse peoples to strengthen theircommunities. She has been an organizational consultantand researcher since 1973 and a dedicated global citizensince her youth. Her first work was as a Peace Corpsvolunteer in Korea and a public school teacher and urbaneducation administrator in New York. She has beenassociate professor of management at the Marriott Schoolof Management, Brigham Young University, and CambridgeCollege, Massachusetts.

Meg's path-breaking book, Leadership and the NewScience was first published in 1992, and has beentranslated into more than 20 languages. This book iscredited with establishing a fundamentally new approachto how we think about organizations.

Turning To One Another: Simple Conversations to RestoreHope to the Future (2002), proposes that it is the simple, familiar act of conversation that offers the most hope forchanging the world. This book is being widely used bycommunities, schools, religious organizations, and socialchange efforts. An expanded second edition waspublished January 2009.

Using her unique blend of storytelling, humor, and researchanalysis, sociologist and educator Bertice Berry will discussthe connection between the well-being and preparednessof education leaders and student success. Realizing thedemands on both the professional and personal lives ofschool executives, Dr. Berry will provide information andtools for creating work-life harmony, personal wellness, andeffective communication leading to greater productiveinvolvement with students, parents, faculty, staff, andcommunity leaders. School leaders will leave feelingempowered to change themselves and their communities.

No one defies stereotypes, generalizations, or clichés morethan Bertice Berry. Told by a high school teacher that shewas “not college material,” Berry not only graduatedmagna cum laude from Jacksonville University where shewas awarded the President's Cup for leadership, shesubsequently earned a Ph.D. in Sociology. Dr. Berry taughtsociology and statistics at Kent State University and soonrealized by using humor in her lectures to address suchdifficult subjects as racism and sexism, she was making aprofound impact on her students.

Berry left Kent to become an award-winning entertainer, lecturer and comedienne. She has created a niche as agifted speaker with a comic edge and a serious message. An accomplished singer, she soothes the heart and spiritwith her soon-to-be-released CD, “Breathe”, a delicate mixof meditation and song. Berry also is a best-selling author. Her latest book, The Ties That Bind, was released inJanuary 2009.

Thebenefits of women exerting leadership include multiple effects:children go to school, children become healthier, communitiesdevelop more capacities, women rise as talented and creativeleaders.
