Principal Report It seems that every year the school involves itself in more activities for students and staff to participate in, and I am extremely proud of all of the students who took part in the school program of camps, day trips, ex-cursions and classroom activities throughout 2017. I had the pleasure of attending one of our newest events last week. The first Lalor Secondary College CD launch titled – Intrinsic Expressions. This was a wonderful event that celebrated all of the efforts the students involved in the LSC college music program put in throughout the year. I thank all of the students and staff who were involved, and encourage all members of our community to pur-chase a CD from the general office for $5.00. 2017 was a year of significant school events that were both celebrated and mourned. At the beginning of the school year and end of 2016 all members of the commu-nity celebrated the fantastic VCE results achieved by the class of 2016. For the first time ever our school achieved a median study score of 30 for all subjects. This was an amazing result, and continues the improvement for our senior students which has been consistently high now for over 7 years. We also had the highest percentage of scores above 40 with 4.8% of all scores above 40, anoth-er fantastic achievement for the class of 2016 and the school community. On Friday the 15th of December, 2017 the current Year 12 students will receive their re-sults and we sincerely hope that all of the hard work completed throughout the year has paid off for all of them. That hard work and success will be celebrated by all year 12 students, and their families at the Presenta-tion/Graduation Evening on Wednesday the 20th of De-cember at Parade College. I ask all families who have received invitations to please rsvp your intentions for this evening. One of our schools most treasured staff members re-tired this year. After 42 years at Lalor Secondary College Creina Moloney retired from her role as the Library Technician. Creina touched the hearts and minds of many during her time here and the entire school com-munity wished her a fond farewell. The school also mourned the loss of Julian Mroczkowski who passed away unexpectedly over the term 3 break. Julian was employed at the school for 10 years as a dedicated and passionate English / Psychology teacher who built ter-rific relationships with students. He will be sorely missed from our college. The teaching and learning program continues to engage with the Education State, Framework for Improving Stu-dent Outcomes. In 2017 all teachers where asked to in-volve themselves in the Helen Timperley Teacher inquiry and knowledge-building cycle as part of the schools fo-cus on Evaluating their Impact on Learning. We asked our staff to use student assessment and data to find out about their student’s knowledge and skills prior to com-mencing instruction to ensure they would meet the

learning needs of each student in the classroom. This focus will continue into 2018. The 2018 school year will once again have a staggered start to allow for all students to have Year level assem-blies and to have the correct Home Group Teacher and subject teachers for their first lessons on their first day of school in 2018. Hence, please be aware that;

students in Years 8 and 10 will commence school on Wednesday the 31st of January and will not be required to attend on Thursday the 1st of February.

students in Years 7, 9 and 11’s will commence school on Thursday the 1st of February.

Students in Year 12 will commence school with the Year 12 Study Skills Camp on Wednesday the 31st of January with regular scheduled classes commencing on Monday the 5th of February.

All students in Years 7 to 11 will be required at school on Friday the 2nd of February

All students are required to attend school on their first day in readiness for their classes and all parents are asked to ensure that they have sufficient uniform to meet the schools uniform policy from day one in 2018. As we near the end of the 2017 school year I hope that the year has been a rewarding one for your child and that they have become stronger emotionally, socially and academically. The students at Years 7 to 9 will enter the end of year activities program on Monday the 11th of December. I know that each year this program continues to get better, and that both staff and students enjoy this time in particular the school picnic on Tuesday the 19th of December. I encourage all parents to return their child’s permission form with payment to the general office as soon as possible. I would like to thank the many teams including the School Improvement Team, Teaching and Learning Team, KLA leaders, KLA teams, Student Management team, Wellbeing team, Education Support team, and School Council for their unwavering dedication to their tasks and ongoing encouragement of students to achieve at their highest level. The initiatives implement-ed rely on this passion and without your efforts, the con-tinuous improvement being achieved by the school could not occur. I would also like to say thank you to all of the parents who continue to support their children’s learning and all of the students who are challenging themselves to be the best they can be. As this is our last newsletter for 2017, I wish the entire community of Lalor Secondary College a happy, safe and enjoyable festive season with family and friends and look forward to celebrating the beginning of a new year in 2018. Corey Jewell College Principal.

Year 12 & 11 It’s been an incredibly busy time in the Senior school as we've said goodbye to our current year 11s and 12s and are running our comprehensive orientation programs for our 2018 senior students. A lot of our focus here at the college is on improving student academic outcomes, finding pathways for students and supporting our stu-dents as we hold them to high expectations and guide them to achieve their very best not only at Lalor, but in their life when they progress from secondary school to tertiary education or the workforce. But every now and then we get to celebrate all of our hard work and I’d like to share some of our recent celebrations. On Tuesday 21st of November I had the privilege of attending the HWLLEN Network VCAL, VET and SBAT Awards where a number of our students were awarded prizes for their studies in the above areas. A dedicated team of teachers were there to support the students and their families and it was a proud moment for all watching these students achieve their very best. It makes all of the hard work worth it! On Friday 24th November, we held our Year 12 Formal. Our students arrived at docklands all looking beautiful and handsome and ready to dance the night away! Dancing alongside them were a wide range of staff who came along to celebrate and support the 2017 gradu-ating class. Events like these remind me that though our focus is always on students and their achievement, that it takes a group effort from students, families and school staff to guide our young people through the ups and downs and stresses of their senior years of schooling and I feel lucky to be a part of such a caring and hard-working team here at Lalor Secondary College. I encourage all students to use their holiday time well to prepare for the rigours of VCE and VCAL in 2018 and I wish all members of the college community a happy holiday break. Julie Ryan Assistant Principal

Years 10 & 9 This week Mr Wilkinson, Mr Mc Donald and Mr Danher farewelled our year 10 students at the final year assem-bly for 2017. Together, we are all very proud of their achievements, not only for this year but also over the past two years, where we were privileged to see them grow and develop into fine young adults. Their experiences as students throughout the forma-tive middle years of schooling have enabled them to un-derstand that there are no secrets to success. Success is the result of hard work, preparation and the ability to learn from ones mistakes or failures. Together with their teachers, we wish them a happy holiday and all the best in their senior year’s studies in 2018. I will certainly keep an interest in their progress throughout year 11.

Once again, this year, all year 9 students will be involved in The City Experience Program during activities week. This will be a further opportunity to learn from guest speakers, and participate in an exciting journey around the Melbourne CBD. This year under the direction of Ms Jovcevski and Ms Carmody, the program builds on the learning the year 9 students have experienced in Ex-plore sessions thorough the year. It has been wonderful hearing about some of the exciting activities that each home group has planned with their Explore teachers, certainly something to look forward to after the busy end of year period. Keep a look out for photos to be in-cluded in the last newsletter of this year! The Activities Program will culminate with the traditional whole school picnic on Tuesday December 19th

Year 8 & 7 Last week we welcomed the large majority of the 2018 Year 7 families and students to the school for an information session and the opportunity to meet next year’s teachers and class mates. It was fantastic to be able to meet so many families and I am extremely happy to say that Grade 6 students from 30 primary schools will make up the Year 7 cohort in 2018. Such a strong and sustained interest in the school is a clear affirmation of the high regard Lalor secondary College is held in the community. Parents and carers are very aware that a Year 7 place at Lalor Secondary College will provide students with a great start to their second-ary learning journey. We pride ourselves on the work we do transitioning the Grade 6 students into the school and I would like to thank the parents, families and primary schools for the great support we get during the transition process. We will see some of the students next week for our pre-orientation day and again the following week for the state wide year 7 orientation day.

A reminder to our current Year 7 and 8 students that activities week begins Monday the 11th of December. Teachers have put together a fantastic program of events comprising of excursions and events inside the school. Students already have details and permission slips for the excursions and these should have been returned to the school. All students will receive a timeta-ble of all events and activities next week.

I would like to see all Year 7 and 8 students taking advantage of activities week and remind students that The Lalor Secondary College Code of Behaviour applies to all activities and events

Year 12 Formal 2017

On Friday 24th November, year 12 students and quite a few staff members attended the Year 12 Formal at Waterfront Venues, Docklands.

It was a wonderful event, which allowed the students to celebrate the completion of not only their exams, but their secondary studies. Students indulged in a three-course meal, danced the night away and took many a happy snap. There was a photo booth and a professional photographer on hand to ensure that the momen-tous occasion was appropriately documented. The Formal is always a great evening and a chance for staff and students to celebrate their hard work over the year. Congratulations to the Year 12 cohort of 2017 for getting through a tough, but fruitful year!

Advance

At the beginning of November two excited Year 9 AD-

VANCE classes set off on a 3 day adventure down to

Lorne. The students were required to take part in this

camp in order to fulfil the ‘Adventurous Journey’ com-

ponent of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The students were required to carry their packs whilst

walking, with all camping equipment and necessary

food in it. In total, students walked a massive 18 km

of flat, down-hill and the dreaded up-hill terrain. They

cooked their meals on Trangia stoves and slept in two

-man tents with their partner. On the third day,

students were fortunate enough to take part in a two

hour surf lesson conducted by ‘Go Ride a Wave’. At

the end of the three days it was evident that students

were absolutely exhausted but still learnt a lot from

camp. It appeared the hardest thing for students to

do was switch off from technology. Thank you to

Mr. Ladnjak, Mr Magnano, Miss Rogneda, Ms. Leckie

and Mr. Danher who attended the camp and thank you

to all the students that gave it their all over the three

days. It was an unforgettable experience and one I hope

they sincerely enjoyed.

Lauren Christian.
