Principal Report

All parents in Years 7 and 9 should have now received the individual NAPLAN report of your child’s results in the mail for the tests they sat in May. These tests in the key areas of Literacy and Numeracy provide parents and educators with a snapshot of how students are progressing individually. The individual results also out-line our progress as part of their school community and as a nation. If any parent has any questions about the report please contact myself on 9463 7300.

Changes to the Working with Children Act (2005) – Changes to the Working with Children Act 2005 (Act) commenced on 1st August 2017. The changes do not affect the requirement for individuals who engage in ‘child-related work’ to have a working with children’s check. ’Child-related work is still any work that involves ‘direct contact’ with a child that is part of the persons work. The two key changes for schools are the following:

The definition of ‘direct contact’ with children has been expanded to include oral, written or electronic communication as well as face-to-face and physical contact; and

A WWC check is now required for anyone engag-ing in ‘child-related work’ regardless of whether contact with a child is supervised by another per-son or not. This means that a volunteer or visitor who is supervised by a teacher must have a WWC Check if they engage in ‘child related work’

Please be aware that this change has been communi-cated to staff members within the college and means anybody coming into the school to present to the stu-dents must have a WWC. If anybody has questions about these changes please contact me at your earliest convenience.

The schools second Curriculum day of the year was held on Friday the 25th of August. All staff were en-gaged in professional learning workshops that un-packed the DET High Impact Teaching Strategies. The strategies are part of the overarching DET Literacy and Numeracy strategy and provide excellent support and resources to all staff within the college. The school will continue to focus on these strategies in the coming months in conjunction with the Lalor Secondary Col-lege Teaching and Learning model. The DET strategies have reinforced, that what we agreed as a staff was great teaching practice, is great teaching practice. For anybody interested in finding out more about the DET Education State initiative should click on the following link

The school Multi-Cultural concert will run on Wednes-day the 30th and Thursday the 31st of August. The stu-dents and Ms Corvasce have been working extremely hard to put together a wonderful show. I believe there will be some special performances from our staff as well. I encourage all parents and students to purchase a ticket at the general office and come along for a won-derful nights entertainment.

Best regards,

Corey Jewell

College Principal

Year 11 & 12

At this time of the term, our Year 12 students are work-ing hard as they are in their final 5 weeks of course-work and head towards the end of year exams. Within this, it is important that students take advantage of not only the careers advice that they get at the college, but also attend University and tertiary institution open days so that they can make informed choices about their upcoming VTAC applications.

The upcoming term break is an important time for preparation for students and they can begin preparing study timetables now. We are working on the Indica-tive exams that will occur at the college over the Sep-tember holiday break. Teachers generously give up their time to supervise the exams and I suggest that all students take full advantage of this opportunity to have some practice before the VCAA exam period. All of the feedback that students receive on their perfor-mance in these practice exams will help guide them towards more study that is effective for the November exam period. Year 11s have undergone the subject selection process and the Senior School Team will be working with stu-dents to ensure that every student has chosen the cor-rect pathway for them.

All senior students are currently having injections for Meningococcal, which are provided free. If your child did not fill out their paperwork to have this vaccination at school, they are still able to access this important vaccination through their local GP. I thank Mr James for his organisation of this.

The SRC is working hard on some upcoming events for Term 3, which I will speak about in future newsletters. The most exciting event coming up is our bi annual multicultural concert! I am looking forward to seeing all of the hard work of students and teachers involved paying off!

Year 9 & 10

I would like to begin by thanking parents of current year 9 students for their attendance at the Parent Infor-mation Evenings held last week. It was pleasing to see so many of you brave the cold weather to hear information about the subject selection process and curriculum offerings available here at Lalor Secondary College. I would like to remind parents that the online subject se-lections close for year 9 into 10 for 2018 this coming Fri-day25/8. Please ensure that your child has completed their subject selection, printed off a copy for you to sign and then returned this form to the general office by the due date. Next Tuesday 28th August is our final Parent Information session, and will be for students currently in year 8 moving into year 9 next year. I would like to en-courage all students and families to attend.

This Friday, our year 10 students will be attending the annual Formal at Normanby House. Students and teach-ers are looking forward to enjoying an evening of fine dining and dancing. It is always lovely to see students dressed for the occasion and enjoying the opportunity to spend time with each other in another context out-side of school. Stay posted for some pictures of our love-ly students in the next addition. A huge thank you to Mr Danher for his organisation of this gala event.

Friday 25th August is also the College Curriculum Day. Staff will be spending the day becoming re acquainted with teaching strategies that maximise student learning. These have been endorsed by the Department of Educa-tion and are known as The High Impact Teaching Strate-gies. As a college, we have incorporated them into our instructional model for all teachers who will continue to be provided with opportunities to further develop their skills of these designated strategies.

Year 7 & 8

Among the many things that makes life at Lalor Second-ary College so rewarding is the number of learning op-portunities outside the classroom we offer our students. Term Three has been extremely busy with whole year level excursions and incursions, guest speakers, individu-al class outings, sporting teams going out representing the school and the work experience program.

Last week I accompanied a group of Year 10 students to the Optus building in the CBD to participate in the ‘Interview 2 Impress’ program. This a mentor based in-terview and communication workshop designed to in-crease our student’s confidence and skills when applying for jobs.

The workshop was sponsored and organised by the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN). ABCN is an organisation which partners with business and schools and develops and delivers a wide range of mentoring programs for schools. Last week during the workshop our students worked with the Optus staff leaders to enhance their interview skills in a comprehen-sive range of ways from anticipating the types of ques-tions employers are likely to ask right through to body language and eye contact. Over the last few years ABCN has linked Lalor Secondary College students to compa-nies such as Price Cooper Waterhouse, King Wood and Mallesons and Citibank. Next month our Year 7 students will continue the association with ABCN through their participation in the ‘Innovate’ program. This is a series of workshops held at Price Cooper Waterhouse (PwC) where students work with a mentor who is an employee of PwC to develop their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills. The program involves lots of fun and engaging activities to illustrate the possible ap-plication of the STEM subjects into real life scenarios. Our students learn how to look at things differently, to be creative and to work in teams.

As well as the ABCN sponsored activities our Year 10 Literature students have recently attended a perfor-mance of Macbeth staged by the Bell Shakespeare Com-pany at the Arts Centre. This was a great opportunity for the students to actually see one of the texts they study come alive on the stage. On Tuesday this week all the Year 8 students visited Kryal Castle at Ballarat as a com-ponent of their humanities studies and last week all of the Year 7 students visited the zoo to support work they are doing in science on eco systems and environments. Finally, every Monday for the past few weeks a group of our students have been working with a professional print maker at the Victorian Print Workshop in a creative enrichment program. The program will culminate with an exhibition of our students work at the Gertrude Street gallery. Another great learning experience!

These opportunities help make school fun and exciting, and at Lalor Secondary College we always endeavour to link these activities back into the classroom where they are regarded as an integral part of the overall learning program and school experience.

YEAR 8 KRYAL CASTLE

YEAR 8 KRYAL CASTLE was a fantastic day out for all. All stu-dents gained an insight to the Medieval World. They are more than ready to continue their class work in this area. MS POPOVSKA

On Tuesday the 22nd of August, the year 8’s went to the Kryal Castle, in Ballarat. It was a very fun and enjoyable experience. We saw many things that we do not see every day. People were dressed up as if we were in medieval times! We saw knights fighting on horses and we learnt about all the defence and torture systems. The scariest part was going through the torture chamber and dungeon. Everyone was frightened! It was very interesting learning about the hierarchy and how everyone in medieval times were treated under the orders of the King and Queen. Although we got back to school late, it was a really exciting and fun day!

By Vasanpreet Kaur and Jashan Virk 8E

On Tuesday the 22nd of August, the year 8 students of Lalor Secondary attended the Kryal Castle excursion. When we ar-rived at Kryal Castle, we were greeted with a friendly welcom-ing from the staff who were dressed in medieval costumes. We made many new experiences and learnt new and inter-esting information. We were shown the Kings dining room and taught about how he would dine with his family. We were also shown the Kings courtroom and we learnt about how he would hold parties, how his servants would serve him, and how lawful decisions would be made depending on the King and Queen. The scariest part was going down the dungeon and learning about the torture chamber and how they would treat people. We went through a maze, it was complicated depending on which way you decided to turn, we were also given a chance to sword fight. The defence system was very clever, as they were on a hill and could look down and have time to prepare as they would spot the danger ahead, they had strong thick walls that were impossible to climb. Under-neath there was water this stopped them from being able to dig under and get through. Overall we had an amazing experi-ence and an exciting day.

On Tuesday the 22nd of August the year eights went to Kryal Castle. At Kryal Castle we got to explore the entire castle. The castle showed us how people used to live Medieval Europe. The castle featured different sections that each represented something from the medieval time. For example we got to learn how people were punished from crime, what medicines people used and we also got to see performances by the knights.

Lalor Personal Training

All students have the opportunity to be involved in a FREE personal train-ing session every Wednesday at lunch. The session is run by a quali-fied personal trainer, Michelle. The sessions will involve body weight ex-ercises, circuits, weight training and many more fun fitness related activi-ties.

Adolescents should participate in 60 minutes of moderate-vigorous activity every day for health benefits. By providing this opportunity, students can increase their activity levels. Being active not only has an effect on physical fitness and weight management but can boost student performance in the classroom.

All students need to go is sign up the Monday before the free session and bring their runners on the day.

The free personal training sessions will run throughout the remainder of Term Three.

Ride2School

Program

Lalor Secondary College is signed up with the Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program in

an effort to encourage more students to actively make their way to school by walking, riding a bike or other active means of travel. Students aged 13-17 are required to be involved in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Unfortu-nately many don’t reach this amount. By actively traveling to school, students can improve their health and fitness and meet this National Physical Activity Guideline.

In home groups, students have been surveyed on the means they travel to school. The most active home group from the most recent count on 18th August was 11B-well done to those active students.

ABCN – Focus on Young Women in

Leadership program.

This term, seven of our Year 11 students have been trav-elling into the city each fortnight to participate in a pro-gram that provides mentoring from women in a variety of business management roles. The program was de-signed to assist the girls to explore ways they can work on their own leadership skills and build confidence. The program was an enjoyable experience for everyone in-volved and the mentors where very enthusiastic about the way our students represented themselves and where very complimentary.

Congratulations girls!

Romeo and Juliet

Last Wednesday Year 10 English students had the privi-lege of attending the Shakespeare Without Tears pro-duction of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ presented by the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company. The students enjoyed the performances of the two actors who portrayed some of the dramatic scenes from the Bard’s most famous of plays. Students laughed, cheered and also danced as the duo adapted Shakespeare’s prose in a more lighthearted and humorous manner with some modern adaptations of the dialogue and a bit of hammy acting on the side, all in good fun! At the end of the performance, students were enlightened further with an in depth discussion of the play’s context, characters and themes which was valuable for their upcoming oral presentation and essay on Romeo and Juliet. Best of all however, was the audi-ence participation (pictured below) when four of our brave students took to the stage to deliver their best Shakespearean dialogue and acting skills, to the delight of all.

Macbeth

On Wednesday the 23rd, 15 Year 10 Literature students had the privilege of witnessing their first ever profes-sional theatre production, attending Bell Shakespeare’s production of ‘Macbeth’ at The Arts Centre Melbourne. Awed by the splendor of the theatre itself, the students were treated to a riveting production of ‘the Scottish play’ with exciting action sequences, a dynamic cast and high production values. Afterwards students were able to experience the vibrancies and grandeur of the city, culminating in a culturally enlightening visit to the State Library of Victoria, where they viewed the exhibitions and the views from the heights of the domed reading room.

It was a worthwhile and valuable experience for our Lit-erature students who thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Literacy Corner

In celebration of book week, we would like to recommend some fantastic books for teachers and students to read and share with a friend. The theme this year is ‘Escape to Everywhere’ and what better way to escape than to let yourself fall into the amazing world of the book.

The first book we’d like to recommend is ‘The Lost Thing’ written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. This wonderful picture book has connected with many students and is has also been adapted into a short film for viewing.

Another wonderful read is ‘Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar

Children’ a fantasy novel by Ransom Riggs. The world the

children live in is literally an escape from the dangerous

hollowgasts that are hunting the children for their eyes.

Hope you have a great book week, happy reading everyone!
