Hawks in the rubber game of their 3-game series. (To this point, Fort Wayne only has 1 series win — a sweep of Peoria April 17-19.) A victory would also give Fort Wayne back-to-back wins for the first time since April 24-25 and mean a winning, 4-3 homestand. About Last Game: In front of the largest crowd in the Midwest League last

night — 6,576 fans — Fort Wayne beat South Bend, 8-4, at Parkview Field. The TinCaps raced out to an 8-0 lead with 3 runs in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, and another 3-spot in the 4th.

California Chrome Run: After a 3-for-3 evening Saturday that included his

1st home run as a TinCap, Jake Bauers is 12-for-24 (.500) at the plate since making his debut last Saturday at West Michigan. Since starting 0-for-5 on the road, Bauers has made himself at home at Parkview Field. The 18-year-old from Huntington Beach, Calif., has three straight three-hit games and is 12-for-19 (.632) at home with a home run, a triple, and 7 RBI. Considering he’s the youngest player in the Midwest League at 18, maybe the best part is that Bauers has only struck out 3 times, while walking twice.

TinCaps’ Best: On Wednesday night, ESPN’s Keith Olbermann (jokingly)

dubbed Fernando Perez the sports world’s third “worst” person for his part in accidentally setting off a geyser at Parkview Field in that afternoon’s game. But if you go by the numbers, Perez is the TinCaps’ “best” hitter. After a 2-hit game Saturday, Perez is batting a team-high .349. That’s also good for the 4th highest batting average in the Midwest League. Meanwhile, after his solo home run Friday night (his 3rd of the season), he enters the day 2nd in the MWL in RBI with 22.

1-2 Punch: For the 2nd day in a row, but just the 2nd time in 26 games this

season, Mallex Smith is in the TinCaps’ lineup but not leading off. That distinction instead goes to Ronnie Richardson, who bats 1st for the 5th time in 13 starts. Last year with Fort Wayne, Smith led off 111 times, while batting 2nd just once. That was on July 3rd at South Bend when Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera was with the TinCaps on a Major League rehab assignment… It’s a good combo for Michael Collins to use at the top of the lineup as Smith leads the team with 15 walks, while Richardson has reached base in all 14 games he’s played this year (14 BB, 4 HBP).

The 21-year-old right-hander from Levit-town, New York, debuted at Parkview Field on Monday night against Great Lakes and had moderate success, striking out 6 in 5 innings, while giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. Verbitsky left the game in line for the win, only for Fort Wayne’s bullpen let the lead slip away. On the other side for the Silver Hawks, Adam Miller starts for the 6th time in 2014. Miller’s ERA was 0.92 through his first 4 starts, but he ran into trouble on Tuesday at Bowling Green. The BYU product by way of Yucaipa, Calif., surren-dered 6 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks, as he left the game after only 3 innings.

2014 TINCAPS TRANSACTIONS

Michael Collins (Manager) is in his first season skippering the TinCaps. The 29-year-old is a native of Canberra, Australia, and last year managed the Padres rookie-level affiliate in the

Arizona League. He led San Diego's Dominican Summer League affiliate in 2012. Collins began his 10-year Minor League Baseball career in 2001 as a 16-year-old in the Angels system, making his debut with the franchise's Arizona League club. Collins moved up to the Midwest League in 2004, playing for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. In 2005, again with Cedar Rapids, he finished third in the league with a .320 batting average. Burt Hooton (Pitching Coach) returns to Fort Wayne and the Padres organization for his second season. Hooton, who once threw a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 16, 1972, spent 15 years in the majors with the Cubs (1971-75), Los Angeles Dodgers (1975-84), and Texas Rangers (1985). He finished his major league career with a 151-136 record with 1,491 strikeouts more than 2,652 innings pitched. For the World Series champion Dodgers in 1981, Hooton was named an All-Star and MVP of the National League Championship Series. The Greenville, Texas native began his coaching career in the Dodgers organization in 1988 and has made six different coaching stops prior to joining Fort Wayne. Among those stops, Hooton served as the Houston Astros pitching coach from 2000-04. Morgan Burkhart (Hitting Coach) is in his second campaign with the TinCaps after making his Minor League Baseball coaching debut last year. Prior to joining the Padres organization, the St. Louis native served as manager for the Windy City ThunderBolts, an independent team in the Frontier League. Burkhart played for the Boston Red Sox from 2000-01 and for the Kansas City Royals in 2003. In the minor leagues, he suited up for the Sarasota Red Sox (BOS) and Trenton Thunder (BOS) in 1999, the Pawtucket Red Sox (BOS) from 2000-01, the Omaha Royals (KC) in 2003 and the Charlotte Knights (CWS) in 2004.
