President's Message by Henry Penas
A social club for mature men and those who enjoy their company
Look at the top of this page. That's the new name of an organization with a rich tradition. And
you are a de facto member. We decided to give up our old name to avoid unnecessary legal
problems. Other than the name everything else remains the same. We continue to grow and
prosper. We are up to over 550 members and continue to strive to add to our already large array
of activities and events.
If you want to maintain a personal relationship with PTWW should go to
primetimersww.org and navigate the web page until you find independent chapters. For $15 you
can become an independent member and partake in their events.
By now we should have completed the name change with the state of Florida, our nonprofit
registration with the IRS, our bank account, our web page and our email address. The web page
and email address have been set up so that if you use your old bookmarks they will redirect you
to the new one. Then all you will have to do is create new bookmarks.
We've notified the Pride Center and other local organizations and businesses. Now all that's
left to do is get used to the new name.
Say "I am a Fort Lauderdale Prime Gentlemen" five times out loud. Go ahead. Nobody’s
listening. Isn't it catchy and elegant? I think so.

Mr. January by Ken South
Mr. January was born in a small town in Nebraska on May 13, 1944. Little did he know that on that
same day, Armistead Maupin, the gay author of “Tales of The City”, would also be born in Washington, DC. Mr. J’s brother, Edward, would fol-
low him a few years later. Their childhood was spent in a loving, but strict home environment.
By 1954 the family moved to Denver, CO. where Mr. J enjoyed his involvement in Junior Achievement
during high school. After high school he enrolled in an Airline Training School, planning on a career in the airline industry. In 1963 he moved to Los Angeles, CA
to pursue that dream, but it did not come to be.
After graduating from a night college in Fullerton,
California, Mr. J started on a long and varied career working for large as well as modest size
corporations. He enjoyed his mostly sales and management positions like at General Electric, where he was the recipient of several awards. His work life also included years at Budget Car Rental, Westinghouse and GTE
(General Telephone and Electronics), which became Verizon. Over the years he was pleased to accept several awards for his work. He retired from his professional career in 2009.
His varied professional responsibilities meant that he had the pleasure of living in
various cities including, Los Angeles, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Little Rock, AR, and Houston and Dallas, TX.
Mr. J describes his gay life beginning in Los Angeles where he “went through the closet door like a bulldozer!” Soon after making friends at his first job, he was
introduced to many of LA’s celebrities --ask Mr. J to “name drop” and you will be pleasantly surprised. His first “gay encounter” was with a guy in a LA bar. Things sped up from there. He reports that gay life was great, with “lots of loves, however no
lovers.”
He became active in the gay community by attending the Celebration of Friends events in Fort Lauderdale. In 1992 he became a leader in the Prime Timers, Dallas chapter, where he served as event coordinator, newsletter publisher and chapter
president. In this capacity, he also became the vice president for independents on the Prime Timers World Wide Board of Directors from 2009 to 2013.
Mr. J discovered Fort Lauderdale with his attendance of several Celebration of
Friends events. In 2016 he decided to move to Florida where he purchased a home in
Coconut Creek. He is a very gregarious type of guy and has numerous friends in the Ft.
Lauderdale chapter. Can you guess who he is?

Changes to After-Mixer Dinners
After long discussion and deliberation, it has been decided to REVISE or
CHANGE the After Mixer Dinner locations. A lot of the members did not approve
of some of the locations and some just did not like the diners that were chosen.
So we have up-graded the restaurants, and hopefully we will have less
discontent.
On the First Monday of the month we will be going to Ale House located at
2861 North Federal Hwy. On the Second Monday we will continue to go to
Chucks Steak House located on Commercial Blvd. The third Monday will take us
to Tee Jay Thai Sushi, located in Wilton Manors. The address is 2254 Wilton
Drive. The Fourth Monday will take us to Ferdos Grill located at 4300 North Fed-
eral Hwy. Ferdos serves hearty Middle Eastern dishes and is very popular. On
the fifth Monday we will be going to the California Pizza Kitchen located at
2301 North Federal Hwy.
We will try these restaurants for a while and see what response we get. If
you have any suggestions or comments please direct them to Doug Kent at
305-495-2978.

Stan Paley
9/18/1940 - 11/21/17
Fellow member Stan Paley passed away yesterday.
He succumbed to pneumonia and pulmonary
fibrosis. He is survived by Mike Golin, his husband
and partner of 32 years .
Due to Stan’s many health problems they have not
been as active in Prime Timer life as they had been
in the past.
Mike and Stan joined our chapter in January of
2006. Stan was Mr. Prime Timer in the September 2014 Surfer. Click here to read the article:
http://www.ftlprimetimers.org/Hall%20of%20Fame/Stan%20Paley.pdf
A Celebration of Life will be planned in the near future. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Vitas Health-
care would be appreciated.
Keep Mike in your thoughts during this very difficult time.
Robert “Rob” Miller
15/1945 – 11/11/2017
Rob Miller passed away in his sleep overnight on November 11. He has been a member since October of 2013. He used to be one of our Wednesday bowlers and frequently attended our mixers. Rob hailed from Michigan and used to live in San Jose, California. He worked as a stagehand in a theater in San Jose. We have no information about a memorial service, but if we hear of one, we will send a second notice.
He will be missed by those who called him a friend.

Luncheons On Again We have a new volunteer for our regular Thursday Luncheons. Mr. Rick Lenzi will be coordinating the luncheon as soon as he returns to the U.S. Doug Kent has agreed to set up the first four luncheons for 2018. On Thursday January 18, we will be going to Shooter’s Waterfront. On February 22, we will be going to Seasons 52 at the Galleria Mall. On March 29 we will be going to the Café Vico located on Federal Highway. Then on April 26, we will be going to our most popular luncheon at the Sea Watch located in Lauderdale By the Sea. As usual, in order to attend these luncheons just give Doug Kent a call or text at 305-495-2978 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Rick will set up the remaining luncheons for 2018, and he will give you details on how to notify him. Our luncheons are very popular, and we know that Rick will be doing an outstanding job when he returns.
New Lunch Concept – The Diner Our luncheons continue to be a very popular event on the Prime Timers Calendar. We are going to try to establish a second luncheon on the First Thursday of every month except for January 2018 we will be going on the second Thursday. We have revised and upgraded the After Mixer Dinners and we have our regular monthly luncheons at very nice up scale restaurants in Fort Lauderdale. So that left a gap for those members who enjoy going to Diners. Doug Kent has agreed to host this new event each month, since it will not require a lot of his time. He has established a list of 8 Diners in Fort Lauderdale and plans to go to lunch at one of these diners each month. There is an open invitation to all members to join fellow Prime Gentlemen at the designated diner. The meeting will always take place between 12:30 and 1:00pm and all you have to do to join the group is let Doug know you are attending. You can do this via text or call him at 305-495-2978. You can also email him at [email protected] if you choose. On Thursday, January 12th, 2018 we will begin with one of the most popular Diners in Fort Lauderdale and that will be Lester’s on State Route 84. Doug will let us know each month which Diner we will be attending. Some of the Diner choices include, Moonlite, Nelson’s, Foxy Brown, Peter Pan and Diner by the Sea. This will be a nice low cost event for those of you who enjoy mixing with your fellow Prime Gentlemen over lunch. Mark your calendars now for the first Thursday of each month except for January 2018 mark the second Thursday and prepare to have some inexpensive fun over a well thought out diner meal.
