Today’s multi-tasked world has very little “black and white.”
Things get busy and it’s tough to remember how important both history and we are.

1715 – Ann Mathews’ invention for cleaning and curing corn was patented (under her husband’s name).
1775 – Mary Goddard was appointed the first woman postmaster.
1776 – Betsy Ross made the first U.S. flag.
1777 - Abigail Smith Adams, wife of 2nd (and mother of 6th) U.S. president, began the women’s rights movement by stating that women “will not hold ourselves bound by any laws which we have no voice.”

1812 – Lucy Brewer became the first woman marine
1819 - Emma Hart Willard defined women’s education issues of the time in her “Plan for Improving Female Education.” 1826 - New York and Boston opened the first public high schools for girls.
1838 – Oberlin College in Ohio became the first co-educational college in the U.S.
1849 – Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S.

1850 – Harriet Tubman was the first woman to run an underground railroad to help escaping slaves
1852 – Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton formed the Women’s New York Temperance Society.
1866 – Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Stanton, Martha Wright and Ernestine Rose founded the American Equal Rights Association.
1869 – Arabella Mansfield was the first woman admitted to the bar.

1872 – Victoria Chaflin Woodhull became the first female presidential candidate.
1877 – Helen Magill was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. degree (Boston University).
1879 – Belva Ann Lockwood was the first woman to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court.
1881 – Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross.
