A sense of community is one of the mostimportant factors in building ready andresilient service members and families. In the military community, support fromothers is the best resource in helping toface daily stressors, including feelings ofisolation caused by being away fromfriends and family, long duty hours, financial stress and other challenges.

It is important for the military commu-nity to recognize when someone theycare for is distancing themselves fromtheir loved ones, their unit, or when theirbehavior is a source of concern. Some

additional signs of someone contemplat-ing suicide can include giving away per-sonal belongings or other actions asobvious as saying final goodbyes.

If someone is in need of help, there areseveral resources to assist. The MilitaryCrisis Line (MCL), 800-273-8255, alsocalled the Veteran’s Crisis Line, is a jointDepartment of Defense and Departmentof Veterans’ Affairs initiative. The MCL isstaffed with caring, qualified VA respond-ers who understand the challenges ofmilitary life. The MCL is a free, confiden-tial service available 24/7 to all active-duty, National Guard, and reserve servicemembers, their families, and theirfriends.

Those in crisis can also send a text to838255 or chat online at www.veterans-crisisline.net with a crisis responder. Those in need of assistance can alsoreach out to their chaplain or SocialWork Services through the installation’smedical facility.
