Eastern Fort Bend County - Brazos River Floodplain
Using publicly available, very high-resolution, LIDAR data, I created a map that shows the relative elevations of eastern Fort Bend County. The blues are relatively low-lying areas and the reds are relatively high. The dark blue represents streams, rivers and lakes. The most prominent feature of this map is the Brazos River floodplain...where many of us live. We can live on this floodplain because engineers have designed a system of canals, levees (pink) and detention ponds that turned the wetlands into (mostly) drylands. What could go wrong….?
Detailed View of Riverstone and Sienna Plantation Area
This image shows a larger (1:25,000 scale) image of new subdivisions of Riverstone and northern Sienna Plantation which are building out in low-lying areas closer to the Brazos River (lower left). The edge of the flood plain is shown to the upper right.
