Naomi Had A Baby
At the conclusion of the book of Ruth, we read about the birth of a baby boy named Obed. With the birth of this child, God has delivered these two women, Naomi and Ruth, and met their greatest needs, food and family. As they praise God for His deliverance and blessing, the women of the city say something to Naomi that may strike the reader as strange. “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel! And may he be a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.” (Ruth 4:14-15) Naomi had nothing, and now she has everything. In Ruth 4:17 they proclaim, “There is a son born to Naomi.” The strange thing is that they say these things to Naomi instead of Ruth. Think about how it would go over if on a child’s first Sunday to attend worship services, it is announced that “a child has been born…” and inserted her mother-in-law’s name instead of the mother’s name. It is a reminder that this narrative is not just about Ruth or even one family. This is a story about the history of Israel. That child would be named Obed. He would father Jesse, and Jesse would father David, the great king of Israel. This is the genealogy we read in Matthew 1. The story began in the period of the judges but serves as an introduction to the period of the Kings.
Have you considered the possibility that the things going on in your life, whether they take the form of incredible tragedy or great rejoicing, are really a part of a much larger story? The coming years of our lives and beyond will help us to see a much fuller and glorious picture in the hand of God.
