Energy

Where do you use energy? With your partner, right down as many activities as you can that consume energy.

All groups will need to give an answer.

Where do you use energy? The truth is, we use energy for just about everything we do.

If we aren’t directly using energy (turning on a light, charging our phones, watching TV), then energy is being used indirectly.

Industry

Energy is used during every step of the industrial process: obtaining resources, manufacturing goods, and transporting goods.

Where Does Energy Come From?

Where Does Energy Come From?

Fossil Fuels refer to the material that is is formed from decomposed prehistoric organic matter, such as dinosaur bones

Where Does Energy Come From?

The most common forms of fossil fuels is petrol (oil/gasoline) and natural gas

Where Does Energy Come From?

Fossil Fuels● Coal

o Declining in use● Natural Gas

o Used primarily for heating in homes

● Gasolineo Most common form of fossil

fuel

Fossil FuelsWhy are fossil fuels great?

● Fossil fuels are cheap (relatively) and easy to use. All you really have to do is burn the fuel and it creates energy.

● Remember, the basic idea is that heat is energy

Fossil FuelsWhy are fossil fuels not great?

● Non-renewable (finite): they will run outo Some estimates say some forms of fossil fuels will

run out in our lifetime● Cause of conflict

o Small supply = fightingo Wars in the Middle East

Fossil FuelsAnd of course, global climate change

Nuclear Energy● Nuclear energy is

much cleaner and longer lasting than fossil fuels

● But it is very expensive and very dangerous if not used properly

● Creates lots of waste

Chernobyl

Fukushima

Renewable● Renewable energy is energy that does not

run out (infinite) or can be replenished

Hydroelectric● Hydroelectric

energy is one of the most efficient renewable sources of energy today

● Dams around the world create a non-stop supply of electricity

Hydroelectric

The downside to hydroelectric energy is that it is very expensive and difficult to build and has a large impact on the environment (not necessarily negative)

Wind and Solar

Geothermal

Renewable● Positives

o These sources of energy are much more environmentally friendly that non-renewables

o They will last much longer● Downsides

o They are much more expensiveo They usually take up a lot of spaceo Do not work everywhere in the worldo No way to store this electricity
