‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.’ Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:35-38) (The Annunciation by Murillo, 1655–1660) Thursday, December 14 will be the annual parish Advent Penance Service. This year, I will start with Mass at 6:30p. This will be immediately followed by the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with one of five priests (myself included). This is a beautiful and important way of entering into Advent and preparing for the coming of the Lord, whose first public words were: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” (Mk 1:15). St Mary, Expectant Mother, pray for us. ~ Fr. Gries ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH Forming Saints for Christ and the Church DECEMBER 10, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 512 North Perkins Street Rushville Indiana 46173 Parish: 765-932-2588 School: 765-932-3639 www.stmaryrush.org Reflection: Dec 12th is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas. In this week’s Gospel, Mary is greeted by the angel Gabriel. She is sent a messenger, and then she too takes the task in appearing to St. Juan Diego centuries after. “May it be done to me according to your word,” is the acceptance of faith. This is the fiat of Mary- the yes. We, too, are called to this obedience of faith, and although the task of responding yes to the call of God is no easy feat, we are promised that nothing is impossible for God. He provides us the grace to withstand the challenges. It is by Mary’s yes, that the Savior of the World came, and it is by our yeses, that we can bring others to know him. Prayer: “O God, who, fulfilling the promise made to our Fathers, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to become the Mother of the Savior, grant that we may follow her example, for her humility was pleasing to you and her obedience profitable to us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever. Amen.”
