Chapter Test, Form B

SHORT ANSWER 1. The removal of as many as 20 million

Africans caused depopulation in some

African countries and caused divisions

among peoples. Africa was left weakened.

2. The Columbian Exchange was the

exchange of plants and animals between

Europeans, Native Americans, and

Africans. Horses were brought to the

Americas by Europeans, as well as deadly

diseases. American food products were

taken to Europe.

3. Indentured servants were people who

agreed to work as servants for a set

number of years in return for food, shelter,

and passage to America. Indentured

servitude was widely used in the colonies

until it became difficult to recruit

indentured servants. It was replaced with

slavery.

4. The Spanish social hierarchy in America

was based mainly on a person’s ancestry.

The people with the highest social stature

were peninsulares, who came from Spain.

Creoles, the next rung down, were

European, but born in the Americas.

Mestizos, lower on the social scale than

creoles, were of mixed Spanish and Native

American descent. The lowest orders

included people of mixed Spanish and

African descent, Africans, and Indians.

5. Salutary neglect means benefiting from

being left alone. The colonies benefited

from the salutary neglect of the English

government because the lack of strict rule

from Great Britain gave the colonies a

chance to develop self-government

through town meetings or local elected

assemblies.

PRACTICING SOCIAL STUDIES SKILLS 1. The first three colonies were Virginia,

established in 1607; the Plymouth Colony

in Massachusetts, established in 1620; and

New Hampshire, founded in 1623.
