Former Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute most recently served as the second-highest official and COO inthe Department of Homeland Security responsible for the day-to-day business and management of the thirdlargest department in the US Federal government which is comprised of more than 240,000 employees andan annual operating budget of nearly $60 billion. Ms. Lute has over thirty years of military and seniorexecutive experience in the United States government and at the heart of efforts to prevent and resolveinternational crises.

Previously, Ms. Lute served as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations responsible for logistical andadministrative support to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide. Ms. Lute also served as AssistantSecretary-General for Peacebuilding, responsible for coordinating efforts on behalf of the Secretary General tobuild sustainable peace in countries emerging from violent conflict.

Prior to joining the United Nations, Ms. Lute was executive vice-president and COO of the United NationsFoundation and the Better World Fund. She also headed the Carnegie Commission on Preventing DeadlyConflict and was a senior public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Ms.Lute also served on the National Security Council staff under both President George H.W. Bush and President

William Jefferson Clinton and had a distinguished career in the US Army, including service in the Gulf during

Operation Desert Storm. She has a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University and a J.D. fromGeorgetown University.
