Introduction to Format

Standard paper sizes provide a convenient and efficient means for designers and printers to communicate product specifications and control costs. Standardized paper sizes also provides a means for selecting products that work together such as A4 paper and C4 envelopes.

The ISO paper standard, the most common and internationally used paper standard is based on a height to width ratio of the square root of 2, this means each paper sizes differs from the next by a factor of 2. The ISO paper standard provides a range of complimentary paper sizes which work across three systems of A, B and C, this means the standard caters greatly for the needs of most designers. In general the A series paper size is used for general purpose printing for everything from, booklets, leaflets, documents, posters, magazines and postcards. However the B series standard is commonly used for the printing of books and publications. The C series standard works as a complimentary standard to the A series and provided printing of envelopes in which the A series standard can fit into.
