STANDARD ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT

A standard type order picker consists of a control platform forthe operator to stand on and while connected with a harness& lanyard (fall arrest equipment), the operator is able tosafely lift an empty pallet, cage or loading platform up to highlevel racking locations to pick and pack stock.

You may be manually steering the order picking forklift inracking aisles to pick stock or you may be secured in a verynarrow aisle with sensors (wire guidance) or rails whichmeans your steering is inactive and you only have to operatethe machine forward, backward, up and down while pickingstock.

WHAT IS AN ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT?

EXAMPLES OF ORDER PICKING FORKLIFTS

An order picking forklift is an industrial truck used mainly in warehousing to pick stock from high levelpicking locations. It is more commonly known as an ‘order picker’ or ‘stock picker’.

While most order pickers are similar, there are many different designs for use in a variety ofenvironments.

Here are some examples of various order pickers under licence class ‘LO’ which stands for ‘load

shifting order picking forklift’:

TURRET TRUCK

Turret trucks are designed to operate in verynarrow aisles, retrieving and placing pallets ofstock at high levels.

The operator sits inside the platform and raisesthe mast, and/or the platform to reach thedesired location.

Other forklifts cannot fit into these aisles but theturret truck is designed with fork-arms that reach,retract and swivel 180 degrees. It has the abilityto turn a pallet around within the narrow aisle.

Because the operator is also risen up in the platform, it is classed as ‘LO’.

HIGH RISK WORKINTRODUCTION TO HIGH RISK WORK LICENSING

WHEN CAN I DRIVE AN ORDER PICKER?

To drive an order picker in Victoria, you are required to have a HRW Licence (Licence To Perform HighRisk Work) under the class ‘LO'.

This HRW licence will be issued by WorkSafe Victoria and is nationally recognised, which means youwill be legally allowed to drive an order picker in all states and territories within Australia.

HOW DO I GET A 'HIGH RISK WORK’ ORDER PICKER LICENCE?

Well, you have taken the first step already by enrolling into a order picker licence course with aregistered training organisation (RTO) that is approved by WorkSafe Victoria.

The next steps that you will need to take are: complete the training during the course and successfullypass the following three (3) parts of the HRW forklift assessment (test):

§ Theory/Written§ Calculations§ Practical/Driving

After successful completion of the above three (3) sections, you will be issued with a 'Notice ofAssessment.' In other words, some paperwork to prove you have passed.

To be precise, you will be given two (2) copies of the 'Notice of Assessment'. A 'Green Coloured' copyand a 'Pink Coloured' copy.

Now, this part is very important, so please read the following section very carefully.

Once the course is completed, you only have 60 days to apply for your High Risk Work licence.You will need the following items to take with you to an Australia Post branch when submitting your‘Notice of Assessment’:

§ Green Coloured Copy of your ‘Notice of Assessment’§ 100 points of I.D§ 1 x Passport Size Photograph of yourself§ L2 Application Form (available at the post office)§ WorkSafe Victoria ‘High Risk Work’ Processing Fee.

The pink coloured ‘Notice of Assessment’ is only a temporary licence for a 60 day period and allows youto legally drive an order picker until your physical licence arrives in the post.

IF I DON'T HAVE AN ORDER PCIKER LICENCE (HRWLicence), CAN I STILL DRIVE AN ORDER PICKER?

You can only operate an order picker in Victoria without aHRW licence if you are enrolled in a training course andunder the direct supervision of an HRW licence holderwith the class LO.

HIGH RISK WORKINTRODUCTION TO HIGH RISK WORK LICENSING

PROVIDING PROOF OF IDENTITY / 100 POINTS OF I.D.

It is a requirement for a ’Licence to Preform High Risk Work’ that you provide proof of your identity toWorkSafe Victoria when you lodge your notice of assessment at Australia Post.

Proof of identity must be from the list below:

IF YOU CAN’T PROVIDE ENOUGH IDENTIFICATION

If you are unable to provide documents that meet the above requirements for proof of identity, pleasecontact the WorkSafe Victoria licensing branch and they will check your identity via other means andissue you with a letter to enable you to lodge your application.

Please be aware that this option will take longer and may require you to provide other forms ofdocumentation not listed above.

RENEWING YOUR ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT LICENCE

Once you have been issued a High Risk Work licence card, you will need to renew it every 5 years.

If you don’t renew your HRW licence within 12 months of the expiry date, the following can happen:

§ The existing HRW licence can’t be renewed

§ You’ll need to complete a training course to be re-assessed§ You will only be able to operate under supervision and when enrolled in a course

You will also need to stay competent and up to date. If you are no longer competent, you must stopdoing high risk work, get re-trained or return your licence to WorkSafe.

HIGH RISK WORKINTRODUCTION TO HIGH RISK WORK LICENSING

DUTY OF CARE

Employee’s duty of care:

When performing high risk work, you are responsible for the health and safety of yourself andothers around you. You must never put the health and safety of yourself or others at risk. You can dothis by:

§ Following safe work practices & instructions§ Cooperating with your employer§ Obeying OHS laws

If requested by your employer, you will need to show written evidence before performing high risk work.The evidence you can show them is:

§ Your relevant HRW licence§ Written evidence that you’re enrolled in an HRW training course

If you are found to be working unsafely, you may be penalised or punished. These penalties are:

§ Your HRW licence can be suspended or cancelled

§ You may not be able to renew your HRW licence§ You may have to be re-assessed to make sure you’re competent

Employer’s duty of care:

An employer must provide a safe workplace that is without risk to anyone’s health. Employers must alsoprovide training, supervision and information to all employees.

If an employee or employer has shown disregard for OHS or has otherwise failed their duty of care,harsh penalties can apply, including fines and possibly jail.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT FOR THE JOB

Before commencing work, you need to decide which type of equipment is appropriate for the work/taskthat needs to be done and if your chosen order picker will need any special attachments to be able tocomplete the job safely.

You will also need to know if the order picker is capable of handling the type of loads you are required to lift and to the height you need to operate.

To determine this, there are a number of things you will need to understand about your order picker’s capabilities.

WORK / TASK REQUIREMENTS

You will have policies and procedures at your workplace that must be followed.

These procedures will outline what is expected of you while working and also provides you withinformation about performing the task as safely as possible. Ensure you follow your procedures at yourworkplace.

You may also receive work orders which could be documentation stating what your work tasks are i.e.pick orders, load manifest, put-away sheets. These orders could also come directly from yoursupervisor/team leader verbally.

If you’re ever unsure about what task is being performed, confirm the work order with your supervisor tomake sure you’re doing what is required.

ORDER PICKER, TURRET TRUCK OR HIGH REACH FORKLIFT?

Many people confuse forklifts and high reach forklifts with order pickers. Counterbalance and high reachforklifts are covered under class ‘LF’ while the order picker is classed as ‘LO’. The main difference beingthat when the operator can be raised in a platform and the equipment has fork-arms, then it classed as‘LO’. All types of forklifts where the operator stays on the ground level, while the mast raises up anddown, is classed as ‘LF’.

Basically, if you need to retrieve fully stocked pallets from racking or from trucks, then you must alwaysuse a forklift or reach. The order picker is designed only to pick and pack stock.

The only exception is the turret truck which is classed as ‘LO’ because the operator is in a platform thatcan raise up and down. This is only to be used in ‘very narrow aisles’ with wire guidance or rails to keepthe truck secured in the aisle. Loaded pallets are put-away and retrieved with the turret truck.

ATTACHMENTS

Most order pickers have tines (fork arms) for lifting pallets andplacing stock onto the pallet, but some workplaces will require youto pick furniture, white goods and other objects that may require anattachment.

Before an attachment is used on an order picker, it must complywith Australian Standards, be fitted correctly and be the rightattachment for the order picker.

SURFACE CONDITIONS

When operating an order picker, check to see if the surface you are operating on isn’t slippery oruneven. Order pickers can only operate on hard, level surfaces and must never be operatedoutdoors or on any type of ramp/slope/uneven surface.

PLAN YOUR TRAVEL PATH

Before starting any order picker task, it’s important to plan your travel path to make sure you’re safe andto avoid any workplace hazards or risk to pedestrians and equipment.

When planning your path, think about:

• Is there enough lighting?

• Safe speed to travel at• Any ramps or slopes?

• Is the area high enough for your order picker?

• Are there any people around?• Where will you need to sound the horn?

Before starting work, any potential or existing hazards must be identified and controlled.

A hazard is anything that has the potential to harm or hurt you while at work. Check your work area andconduct a ‘site inspection’ to look for any hazards that are above your head, at eye level and groundlevel.

Some examples of potential hazards are:

Not all hazards are environmental. We or other workmates in the area can sometimes cause hazards.These kind of hazards may need to be reported or controlled also:

• Stock that has been been poorly stacked or wrapped

• Driving too fast

• Smoking near battery charging or refueling stations

• Not using pedestrians walkways

• Not wearing protective clothing

If you feel the area is unsafe to work in - DO NOT START WORK.Report the situation to your supervisor or manager.

REAR END SWING

Because of the way the order picker is designed, it creates a hazard known as ‘rear end swing’.It is the action of the rear end of the order picker ’swinging’ outside the line of the front wheel whenturning.

It’s dangerous because the rear end of the order picker swings outwards and could potentiallycome into contact with stock, equipment, racking or shelves and especially pedestrians workingclose to the order picking forklift.

Always allow for rear-end swing when turning corners and maneuvering the order picker.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

You may need to operate an order picker during a range of weather conditions.

Working in some of the following weather conditions may be dangerous:

• Wind• Water/ice impacted ground• Slippery surfaces• Sun glare

Working in wet conditions may be very dangerous but if it needs to be done:

• Drive slowly• Drive carefully

An order picker is not designed to be operated outdoors but if your warehouse has any wet or slipperyareas, try to avoid the area altogether or control the hazard.

Many workplaces will have policies and procedures for you to follow when it comes to operating in thesetypes of weather conditions.

LOAD CONDITION

Sometimes a load that you need to pick upmight be unstable, odd-shaped or damagedwhich can affect your order picker andload stability.

This can affect the safety of others around you.

Assess each load before picking it up andplan the path you will travel.

During order picker operation, you willmost likely be placing stock, i.e. cartons, onto anempty pallet or loading platform and not liftingloads as such. This means you will need to stackstock safely so the load you’re building doesn’tbecome unsafe or unstable when moving.

Re-stack your load if you feel it’s becoming unsafe

OVERHEAD OBSTRUCTIONS

When operating an order picker, you willbe required to raise the platform to locationsin high level racking, to pick and pack stock.

Because of this, you need to be aware of potentialhazards above your head that you could come intocontact with e.g. beams, lights, sprinklers, electrical linesand roller doors.

Always check above your head before raising theorder picker platform to avoid damage to structures,equipment and potential tip-over.

RACKING

Many warehouses use order picking forklifts in‘very narrow aisles’. These aisles are made upof racking structures, either side of the order pickerand a sensor (wire guidance) or rail is implemented to keepthe order picker within the aisle. This means your steeringis inactive while picking stock in the aisle.

When entering or exiting any racking aisle, it’s important toensure you have positioned the order picker correctlyso you don’t come into contact with the racking whenmoving into the aisle.

Racking damage can eventually lead to serious incidents.If you happen to be involved in such an incident, makesure to report it so the problem can be fixed ASAP.

LIGHTING

Always ensure your working area has sufficient lighting.Operating an order picker in a dark area is unsafe.

Well lit areas help you, as an order picker operator, clearlysee the surface conditions, pedestrians, vehicles,and makes your path of travel much easier tonavigate.

DANGEROUS MATERIALS

Dangerous materials could be chemicals, gasses, acids, explosives and liquids that could be harmful topeople and the environment.

An SDS (safety data sheet) shouldalways be carried with the dangerous materials

The SDS informs you about the hazards ofthe material, how to handle them safely andwhat to do if there is a spill.

BATTERY CHARGING

Order pickers are almost always powered by a battery.

Always charge order picker batteries in a well-ventilated area to avoid explosion as the gas frombatteries can explode when it builds up in a confined or restricted space.

When you are doing your order picker visual checks, make sure the battery:

§ Is not damaged or leaking

§ Is fully charged

§ Has terminals that are clean and undamaged

§ Water levels are correct

§ Is secured properly

§ Connections are in good condition

PEDESTRIANS

When operating the order picker, the area should be secured to prevent any pedestrian access.

If you’re not able to secure the area that you’re working in, you should setup witches hats, signs,flashing lights, other workers to assist and other temporary measures to ensure pedestrians aresafe.

This is especially important in ‘very narrow aisles’. These are designed so only the order picker or turrettruck can fit in and there is no room for pedestrians. It’s also difficult to see them when your platform israised.

When you’re picking stock from height, always use your horn before lowering the platform to warn anypedestrians that may have entered the aisle you’re working in.

HAZARD CONTROL MEASURES

Once a hazard is identified, it’s important to put in place the appropriate hazard control measures.There are many ways of doing this. In some cases, it might be as simple as cleaning up a mess ormoving an obstacle out of your path of travel.

In other cases, you may need to speak with your supervisor, manager or OH&S representative todiscuss how to control the hazard.

It’s also important to know the risk of that hazard. A risk is the chance or possibility of a hazard hurtingsomeone.

You may need to fill out paperwork such as a:

• Risk Assessment

• JSA (job safety analysis)

• SWMS (safe work method statement)

Regardless of what paperwork or discussions need to be had, always setup hazard or risk controls inyour work area before starting the job and as soon as a hazard is identified. This is to preventinjury/harm to your workmates or damage to equipment and/or property.

• Impact on workmates that has affected morale and employee relations

When operating near traffic and pedestrians, put control measures in place that physicallyseparate pedestrians from areas where forklifts operate AT ALL TIMES.

There must be at least a 3 metre distance, or a suitable permanent physical barrier, betweenpedestrians and the area in which a forklift is operating.

COMMUNICATION METHODS

In every workplace communication is extremely important. You will need to communicate with otherworkmates, supervisors, managers and safety officers while in the workplace and they will also need tocommunicate with you.

Some methods of communicating are:

TWO-WAY RADIO

If a workplace is big enough, you may haveto communicate to other personnel via two-way radio.

If you’re operating the order picker, stop in a safe areabefore using the radio.

LISTENING AND QUESTIONING

As simple as it sounds, it’s important to ask questionsand listen to other staff when communicating to makesure you know what is expected on-site.

It is very important that if you don’t understand theinstructions, you ask questions and clarify what youwere asked to do.

SIGNAGE

Workplaces have various signs on-site that tell you what the requirements are in that particular area.Some examples could be speed limit signs, signs that tell you what PPE must be worn and signs thatwarn you of the dangers in the area.

REPORTING A PROBLEM

All workplaces should have a policy or procedure you need to follow when reporting problems in yourwork area.

It’s important to report incidents, accidents, faults, damages and near-misses so the company can putmeasures in place to make sure the same problem doesn’t keep occurring.

AUDIO AND VISUAL

Trying to get someone’s attention over the noise of an order picker, may require a more audible source.For example, in an emergency situation, an alarm may sound to prompt evacuation. Some workplaceshave a loud speaker system that is used by staff to communicate. There may also be flashing lights andother visual warning aids that can alert people.

TRAFFIC WARNING SYSTEM

Some workplaces have a traffic warning system, similar to when we drive a car on the road. This can include traffic lights, automated boom gates, flashing lights, pedestrian stop/go lights and pedestrian gates.

BATTERY CHARGING & CHECKS

During your pre-operational or visual check, you may find that you need to take the order picker offcharge or fill the battery water levels. Disconnect the battery connection from the charger and switch thecharger off. You’ll then need to reconnect the battery connecter to the order picker.

If you need to top up water levels, always wear gloves when re-filling a battery in case of leaks that cancause injuries.

Ensure the order picker battery is charged in a well ventilated area. The gasses from batteries cancause an explosion if there’s not enough ventilation in the charging area.

Follow your workplace procedures when topping up water levels or battery charging.

FLUID CHECKS

There are fluids in an order picker that need to be checked and topped up when required. This shouldbe done as part of your pre-operational check.

Some fluids that should be checked are:

• Hydraulic fluid• Brake fluid

• Power steering fluid

• Battery levels, condition & security

As all order pickers are electric, you’ll need to check that battery electrolytes are at the desired level.If the floats in the battery cells have sunken, then the electrolyte levels will need to be topped up.Only top up battery levels if the battery is fully charged because the cells can overflow.

Ensure the battery and connections are also in good condition.

It’s important to wear the correct PPE when refilling battery levels.

CONTROLS

Most order pickers have similar control layoutswith steering on the left hand side,up/down/forward/reverse/horn on the right sideand the dead-man pedal and pallet grab on thefloor of the platform.

You need to know where all the controls are onyour order picking forklift, what they do and how touse them.

This information can be found in the operatorsmanual.

Although a turret truck is classed as ‘LO’ thecontrols are very different to an order picker. Besure to understand those controls, prior tooperating the equipment. Additional workplacetraining must be provided when learning to operatea turret truck.

LOG BOOK AND REPORTING DAMAGE

Although it is important to check the order picker, it’s also important to make sure you have completedthe daily inspection sheet or logbook to confirm that the order picking forklift has been visually checkedand any problems noted.

Filling in the logbook or daily inspection sheet lets your supervisor or manager know that the orderpicker is being checked before each shift and it ensures that you know whether or not the order picker issafe to operate.

Operating order pickers that have not been checked properly puts you and other workmates at risk.

If at anytime during your visual check you notice a fault with the order picker,these steps must be taken:

§ STOP USING THE ORDER PICKER

§ TAG IT WITH A ‘DO NOT USE’ TAG

STARTING THE ORDER PICKER

Once you have conducted all the appropriate visual checks,its now time to start your order picker and check thefunctions.

Before you turn the key and start up the order picker:

§ Check for any ‘do not operate’ tags§ Ensure the park brake is engaged (if applicable)§ Order picker is in neutral§ Ensure access gates are lowered§ Connect your harness to the lanyard

Once started, listen for any abnormal or strange noises.If you do hear strange noises, ensure you follow the tag outprocedure and don’t use the order picker.

FALL ARREST EQUIPMENT (HARNESS & LANYARD)

Because you are operating the order picker at high levels, you must wear fall arrest equipment(harness & lanyard) at all times while operating.

Check your harness and lanyard to make sure they’re in good condition (no tears, frays or damage) andensure they have not expired. Most harnesses and lanyards have a limited lifespan of 10 years or less.Do not use out of date fall arrest equipment and report the fault to your supervisor.

You will be shown how to wear the harness during your training course. The harness is then connectedto a lanyard that is attached to a rail on the overhead guard.

DEADMAN SWITCH

To be able to operate the order picker, you will need to ensure your foot is firmly pressing the dead-man switch.

This is a safety device to ensure you are inside the platform when operating and will stop the machine if you fall out or step out of the platform. Check that it works correctly.

Most functions will not work unless the dead-man switch is pressed and you will need to keep your foot there at all times to be able to move the order picker.

It can also be used as an emergency brake when released.

PALLET GRAB/CLAMP

When lifting pallets or loading platforms, you willneed to ensure it’s secured onto your order pickerby engaging the pallet grab. This locks the pallet soit can’t slide off or move on the tynes.

Always lift the pallet or platform slightly first, thenclamp so it’s in the correct position.

When placing a pallet or platform on the ground,you will need to release the pallet grab first.

FIND THE LOAD WEIGHT

Before moving or shifting any load, you need to know the weight of the load and if your order picker cancarry it safely. If a load is too heavy for the order picker, it can become unstable and possibly tip over.

YOU CAN FIND OUT THE WEIGHT OF A LOAD BY:

§ Reading a label on a load

§ Calculating the load§ Check weighbridge certificate

§ Check consignment note

§ Weigh the load if possible

Load’s should also be stacked properly and well-balanced.

If you feel the load that you intend to lift or the load you’rebuilding is not stacked correctly, stop to re-stack the load.

If you find a load has too much weight on one end, lift theload with the heaviest end against the heel of the fork armsor when picking heavy items, keep them closer to the controlplatform and not at the far end of the pallet or loading platform.

CALCULATION

Calculating the load is one of the most common methods used by order picker operators.

It can be as simple as identifying the weight of one item on the pallet and multiplying that weight by thenumber of items on the pallet (if all are the same).

Example 1

• There are 6 cartons per layer and 4 layers on the pallet.

• Each carton weighs 20kg• Pallet weight is 10kg

• 6 cartons x 4 layers = 24 cartons• 24 cartons x 20kg each = 480kg• 480kg + 10kg pallet = 490kg total

Example 2

• There are 4 drums on a pallet • Each drums weighs 210kg• Pallet weight is 15kg.

• 4 drums x 210kg each = 840kg• 840kg + 15kg pallet = 855kg total

THE DATA PLATE & RATED CAPACITY

Once you have found out the weight of the load, you need to know if your order picker can carry itsafely.

You can find out this information by reading your order picker’s data plate.

All order picker’s must have a readable data plate. The data plate tells you the rated capacity of theorder picker. Rated capacity is the maximum weight an order picker can carry at a specific heightand load centre distance.

At certain heights, your order picker’s capacity may decrease. If this is the case it will be stated on yourdata plate. Load centre distance also effects the capacity of your order picker.

If load centre distance is increased then it will reduce your order picker’s capacity.

The data plate may also tell you other information about the order picker,such as:

§ What attachments the order picking forklift is rated for

§ Battery information

§ Limit switch information

§ Weight of the order picker

§ The model and year the order picker was manufactured

LOAD CENTRE DISTANCE

To really understand what the data plate is stating inregards to the order picker’s lifting capacity, you willneed to grasp the concept of ‘Load Centre Distance’.

Load centre distance is the distancefrom the edge of the control platformto the load’s centre of gravity.

Unless otherwise specified, an order picker’s load centre distance will be rated at 600mm (in Australia)

Order pickers in Australia are rated to lift AustralianStandard pallets (think of blue ‘Chep’ or red‘Loscam’ pallets).

Because a standard pallet is approximately1200mm square, this means the centre ofgravity of an evenly stacked pallet will be at600mm.

It’s important to keep your load’s centre of gravityat 600mm when lifting pallets.

When load centre distance is increased(longer than 600mm) or if you do nothave a load hard up against the platform,then your order picker’s capacity will bereduced and it may also cause your orderpicker to be unstable.

The further that load centre distanceincreases, the less weight your orderpicker can carry.

HAZARD PREVENTION

As discussed previously, just like you would do before starting work, before shifting loads you mustmake sure hazard control measures are in place to prevent any mishaps during travel.

Some examples are:

It is also very important to know what kinds of goods you will be moving.Sometimes the load or goods you are moving may include dangerous goodssuch as:

§ Flammable liquids§ Gas bottles§ Lithium Batteries

If you are handling any goods like these, please make sure you read your workplaces ‘Safety DataSheets (SDS) to see what actions you need to take when moving and or packing any dangerous goods.

If you are unsure of what goods your are moving, ask your supervisor or manager.

SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES

All workplaces should have safe operating procedures for order picker operation.You will need to familiarise yourself with the procedures and adhere to them at all times.

Here is a list of common procedures you will encounter that will ensure you operate an order pickingforklift safely:

§ Always travel at a safe speed and follow your workplace safety procedures

§ Ensure your fall arrest equipment is fitted, at all times when operating§ Make sure your travel path is clear

§ You must always remain inside the control platform when operating an order picker

§ Never carry passengers, unless the order picking forklift is designed to do so§ Obey all traffic signs

§ Keep a safe distance from other vehicles

§ Never turn on a ramp or slope as this can cause the order picker and load to tip over

§ Keep left in two-way traffic

§ Drive the order picking forklift slowly and carefully in wet and slippery conditions

PEOPLE AROUND ORDER PICKING FORKLIFTS

Accidents between pedestrians and order pickers within workplaces are unfortunately far too common.

It is very important as an order picker operator to watch out and be aware of any people around you, other vehicles and obstructions.

§ NEVER raise your load near or over people as the load could fall causing injury or death

§ NEVER lift someone on the order picker tines or let someone stand on a pallet and raise them up. This is against OH&S safe working working procedures and it’s more than likely that the people will slip and fall causing injury.

When approaching intersections, blind corners and when you’re nearing pedestrians, use warning devices, such as:

§ Horn§ Flashing lights§ Beepers

WORKING AT HEIGHT

Because you are operating the order picker at high levels,you must wear fall arrest equipment (harness & lanyard)at all times while operating. Even if you might only be travellingat low levels, there is no exception.

Fall arrest equipment will stop you falling from height andhelp to protect you from being thrown out in the eventof a tip-over. Be sure to connect the lanyard to your harnessbefore operating and keep it attached while operating.

When raising the platform to retrieve stock, it’s a good idea to getclose to the location so you don’t have a large gap between yourorder picker and the rack. Try to avoid standing on your pallet orloading platform when placing the stock down.

Never travel with the platform raised. Once stockhas been picked, beep the horn and lower the platform to under600mm before moving again.

If you or someone in your workplace has fallen from height,there is an ‘emergency lowering valve’ in the front of almostall order picker’s which enables you to lower the platform andbring the operator down safely. Always locate the emergencylowering valve on the order picker you’re operating.

PICKING UP A LOAD OR EMPTY PALLET

§ Line up straight in front of the pallet stack. Try to keep the order picker central to the pallet you’re

going to lift.

§ Position the tines so that they’re approximately 300mm away from the load before entering.

§ Stop and raise the platform so the tines are lined up with the desired pallet

§ Drive the fork-arms/tines into the pallet

§ Stop and lift the pallet off the stack

§ Engage the pallet grab once the pallet is lifted slightly

§ Check your path is clear before driving off the stack

§ Drive approximately 300mm clear of the stack so the pallet won’t hit the stack when lowering

§ Stop and lower the platform to under 600mm before turning or driving off

When stacking loads or cartons on top of eachother, you need to make sure you have a-

• solid & level surface,• heavy goods are stacked at the bottom• the load is stable and not stacked too high

TRAVELLING WITH A LOAD

Once you have a load on your order picker, it becomes your responsibility. If the load is not stackedcorrectly, re-stack it.

§ Never travel in a straight line or around corners with a load raised in the air. It can cause the orderpicker to tip-over either forward/backward or sideways. Always travel with a load at 600mm orlower.

§ Never raise or lower a load above people as it could fall on them causing injury or death.

§ Always ensure the pallet grab is engaged to make sure the pallet doesn’t move on the tynes.

§ Ensure your fall arrest equipment is fitted at all times when operating

§ Be aware of slippery conditions e.g. wet floor. Drive slowly and carefully.

§ Monitor the load you are moving to ensure it doesn’t become unstable or unsafe

§ Constantly be alert for pedestrians and other obstructions

§ Stick to your travel plan and follow traffic management procedures

§ Always try to operate with your load trailing, where possible

§ Ensure the access gates/hand rails are closed at all times when moving

OBSRUCTED VISION

If your view is obstructed, before moving you need to:

§ Check the path is clear

§ Check your mirrors (if fitted)§ Look over each shoulder (if reversing)

§ Use warning devices such as horn and flashing lights§ Use a spotter if need be

THE POINT OF BALANCE (FULCRUM)

All order picking forklifts have a ‘point of balance’ or ‘fulcrum’.

§ The fulcrum is a where the tyres closest to the load touchthe ground.

An order picker is like a ‘see-saw’. Think of the fulcrum as themiddle of that ‘see-saw’.

The batteries on an order picker acts as a counter-weight tocounteract the load weight that is being lifted.

This helps to balance out the ‘see-saw’.

You cannot add more counterweights to anorder picker without checking with the manufacturerfirst.

LIMIT SWITCHES AND SENSORS

Most order pickers have limit switches and sensors that help tokeep the operators and other people safe. Some examples ofhow the limit switches work are:

• When the platform is raised above 600mm, the speed willbe reduced or your order picker may be stopped frommoving at all

• When the platform is raised, if you try to turn fast, it won’tallow you

• When entering and exiting aisles, your speed is automaticallyreduced

• Motion sensors that detect pedestrian movement and stopsthe order picker from moving

• Access gate/hand rail sensors stop the order picker frommoving unless they are closed.

These limit switches are designed for safety reasons and you arenot permitted to interfere with any safety devices orswitches.

MONITOR THE LOAD

While driving the order picker, you must monitor the load you’re carrying to ensure it doesn’t shiftand become unstable or unsafe.

This could become a hazard for pedestrians nearby, other vehicles and equipment.

If it looks like the load you’re carrying isn’t stacked properly, stop to re-stack the load.

Because you will be stacking stock onto a pallet or loading platform, you need to ensure your load isgoing to remain stable while moving.

If you find the pallet that you’re building is becoming unstable or unsafe, stop and re-stack it beforemoving the order picker. It’s always safer to do this at ground level.

You won’t be able to secure your load with any wrap as you’re picking, so you will need to move theorder picker with an unsecured load most of the time.

This means it’s extremely important toensure your load is safe and stable whenmoving.

IF there is an emergency - you MUST communicate three important things:

1. There is an emergency situation2. The nature of the emergency3. Where the unsafe area or areas are

Who do you tell:

1. Other people at the workplace2. Manager, supervisor or safety officer3. Emergency services

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

The actions taken in the initial seconds/minutes of an emergency are critical.

Warning other workmates or any people around you of the emergency can save lives.

When an emergency occurs, the priority is always life safety. The second priority is the stabilisation ofthe incident. You should do everything possible to minimize any damage and/or injury to yourself andthose around you.

Firstly, make sure that you have read and understand your workplace ‘Emergency ResponseProcedures’ and follow the instructions carefully.

If you don’t know what the procedures are, speak with your Manager or OH&S representative.

BRAKING CONTROL

Safe braking distances are determined by a wide range of factors and they are often underestimatedwhen it comes to emergency situations.

It is extremely important that all order picker operators are trained and know how long it takes for theirorder picker to stop when travelling at different speeds.

Best practice is to use your throttle to come to a stop. When going forward, pull back into reverse andbefore the order picker actually moves into reverse, move the throttle back to the central position(neutral). You would do the opposite to stop when travelling in reverse. This is known as ‘plugging’.

If you need to stop suddenly, release the dead-manswitch. The order picker should stop immediately

In some emergencies you may have to cut the power of the order picker.

To do this, you can use the emergency isolator switchif your order picker has been fitted with one.

TYPES OF EMERGENCIES

CHEMICAL SPILLS

In the event of a chemical spill or accident you should:

§ Barricade off the area§ Consult the Material Data Safety sheets

§ Contain the spill

§ Clean up the spill.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

You need to be aware of not only the condition of your order picker but also the environment and conditions you will be working in while driving an order picker.

You should never operate the order picker outside but in case you do, be aware of your surroundings and especially the surface conditions. Order picker tyres are not designed for use on anything except a hard level surface.

Driving outdoors on wet or bumpy surfaces can result in the order picker being stuck or could cause a tip-over

FAILURE OF HYDRAULICS

If your hydraulics fail or start to leak badly on the order picking forklift:

§ Don’t Panic

§ Stop the order picker§ Lower the forks to the ground

§ Tag out the order picker and report the

incident

FAILURE / LOSS OF CONTROL

If your brakes or steering fail on the order picking forklift:

§ Don’t Panic§ Take your hand off the accelerator and roll to a stop

§ Gently apply the brakes or release the dead-man

§ Hit the ‘emergency isolator’ switch if all else fails§ Tag out the order picker and report the incident

TIPPING THE ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT

Some things that can tip an order picker over sideways (lateral) are:

§ Turning too fast

§ Turning on a ramp or slope

§ Turning with fork-arms or load raised

§ Uneven surface

§ Driving with a flat or damaged tyre

§ Carrying an unbalanced load

§ Driving too fast

Some things that can tip an order picker over forwards/backwards (longitudinal) are:

§ Uneven surface

§ Driving down a ramp forward with a load

§ Braking too hard

§ Overloading the order picking forklift

§ Load centre distance too far out

§ Carrying an unbalanced load

§ Driving too fast

§ Hitting an overhead structure

IF THE ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT IS TIPPING OVER

• LEAN AWAY FROM THE DIRECTION THAT THE ORDER PICKER IS TIPPING• HOLD ON TO THE STEERING WHEEL• BRACE YOURSELF WITH FEET FIRM INSIDE• DO NOT JUMP!

Jumping from a tipping order picking forklift is dangerous andcan cause serious injury or death from being crushed.

IF YOUR ORDER PICKER COMES INTO CONTACT WITH POWER-LINES

Working near power-lines or overhead cables can be extremely dangerous if the correct precautionshaven’t been made. In a situation where your order picker comes into contact with power-lines, followthese 5 steps:

1. Warn others to stay away

2. Try to break contact with the lines

3. Stay in the order picker if safe. If you must leave, jump clear of the order picker withouttouching the order picker and ground at the same time. Land with your feet togetherand shuffle away at least 8 metres

4. Report the incident to the relevant authorities

5. Have the machine checked before re-use

PARKING PROCEDURES

Once you’ve parked the order picking forklift in a safe area you need to shut it down according toworkplace procedure.

When shutting down an order picking forklift you must do the following (where applicable):

§ Park in a safe area, away from hazards

§ Engage the handbrake or park brake (if fitted)

§ Place transmission into neutral (throttle in central position)

§ Lower the platform to the ground

§ Switch off and remove the key

§ Follow workplace specific procedures

PARKING THE ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT

Once you have finished using the order picker, it needs to be parked safely, away from hazards.

Do not park an order picker on or near:

§ Entry and exits

§ Walkways

§ Emergency exits

§ First aid stations

§ Fire-fighting equipment

§ Ramps or slopes

§ Area obstructing traffic

§ Less than 2m from rail tracks

If for some reason you need to park on an inclined surface (ramp or slope), ensure the order picker is parked accordingly and chock the wheels.

This prevents the order picking forklift from rolling down the incline.

POST-OPERATIONAL CHECK

After you have correctly parked and shutdown the order picker,you will need to conduct a post operational check.

Just like a ’pre-start’ check, a post-operational check involves walking around the order picker while conducting checks.

Remember that it is your responsibility to make sure the order pickeris safe for the next operator.

SECURING THE ORDER PICKING FORKLIFT

To make sure the order picking forklift is secure, remove the key before leaving the order pickerunattended to prevent unauthorised use.

Each workplace may have different procedures as to where to leave the key, so please check withyour supervisor or manager.

If your workplace utilises an electronic orderpicker tracking system, then you mayonly need to logout of the system as onlyauthorised operators have access to login.

If you find any defects, faults or damage on the order picker during your post-operational check youmust follow the tag out procedure.
