WINTER 2011OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

Natanya was one of our first Phoenix Outstanding Achievement Award winners at the Phoenix Awards Luncheon on November 9th. She and fellow honoree, former ForKids kid, Vincenza Githens were honored with Children’s Champion Betty Wade Coyle.

Pregnant at 15, Natanya had to grow up quickly. Her carefree days of spending time with friends quickly disappeared. She felt trapped by her family’s financial situation and home life. Natanya painfully admits to a personal struggle with showing love to her young son while she herself was still maturing as an adult.

“I didn’t love myself, and not loving myself it was hard to give him love…it is one of the biggest regrets I will ever have in my life,” remembers Natanya.

Natanya overcame all the discouraging statistics. She graduated from high school and enrolled at Old Dominion University. But the overpowering combination of an abusive relationship, an unstable housing situation and the difficulty of trying to juggle work and motherhood took its toll. She dropped out midway through her first year.

When Natanya finally escaped her abusive partner, she moved in with a friend. But the two were eventually evicted. She then

bounced around from couch to couch with little money to support her son.“I needed something more stable for myself and my son. So I contacted Haven House [the ForKids emergency shelter].”

“It was scary because I didn’t know what to expect. Here I was moving into a strange place. I didn’t know anybody. I didn’t know the rules, what I was going to encounter, and what was going to be expected of me,” she said. But Haven House was much more than she imagined.

“The house was beautiful…it is actually the biggest house I have ever lived in. And it was home for a period of time. They made it feel like home." There, she began working with her case manager on a plan to help her achieve her goals. She wanted a college degree, a good job and a home for her family.

Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Poverty for Families and Children

When The Virginian-Pilot reported that poverty is up all across the U.S. except in Hampton Roads (Poverty Worsens in U.S., but not in Hampton Roads, November 3, 2011) I had to scratch my head. On the McCormick-Meter (carefully calibrated from detailed measurements of the intake of antacids) I’d say poverty is off the charts locally. More specifically, I’d point to our current average call volume of 160 calls a day and an all-time record high of 208 calls on October 29th from

Thaler's Thoughts

Poverty’s Not Worse Where?

Page 2: ForKids Winter Newsletter 2011

While at Haven House, Natanya found a steady job at Montgomery Wards and began saving for an apartment. She moved out and soon signed up for classes at Tidewater Community College. She was back on track. She earned her Associate’s Degree then transferred back to ODU, finally earning her long awaited Bachelor’s Degree in 2001.

Natanya was the first person in her family to earn a college degree.

“Nobody else in my family had ever had a college degree and I knew that was something that I wanted.”

Her ambitions not yet fulfilled, she started graduate school at Norfolk State. Working and going to school, she completed her Master's Degree in Urban Education in 2007. Today, Natanya works as a child protective services social worker for the City of Virginia Beach where she has been employed for five years.

Looking back at her time with ForKids, Natanya thinks the most important thing was “having a place to stay where I felt safe and having someone to talk to me about my goals who didn’t look down on me.” Natanya now tries to do the same for families she helps as a professional social worker. “I can understand

where they are and I use that to my benefit to build stronger relationships with my clients.”

Wow. Congratulations Natanya. Your courage and perseverance shows us that there is a phoenix inside everyone coming through our doors, just waiting to fly.

people requesting rental assistance, shelter and utility assistance. Likewise, the Norfolk Department of Human Services reports a 32% increase in applications for food stamps and the Food Bank of Hampton Roads reports 1 in 4 households in Hampton Roads are now “food insecure.”

Yep, reporting from the trenches, poverty is pretty bad right now in Hampton Roads.

Despite the glorious headline, The Pilot’s conclusion came from a report by the Brookings Institution that compared concentrated poverty rates in U.S. Census tracts between 2005 and 2009. A primary finding was that poverty is growing twice as fast in suburbs than in cities. “The phenomenon is driven in part,” said Elizabeth Kneebone, with Brookings, “by poorer residents moving toward suburbia because that's where the jobs are, particularly in retail. It's also the aftermath of prolonged job and wage stagnation in which some suburbanites have lost ground.”

Here in Hampton Roads, particularly Norfolk and Portsmouth, our urban communities have demolished public housing to build mixed income communities. This redevelopment has undoubtedly created healthier

communities and de-concentrated poverty, as noted in the Brookings study. But it also resulted in a devastating loss of affordable housing, sending more people to our door and keeping them in shelter longer as low-wage families search for affordable housing that doesn’t exist.

So, while the Brookings report doesn’t give us an up-to-the-minute account of the immediate pain in our community, it does tell us that urban centers no longer have the lock on poverty and homelessness. This is something I think many in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Western Tidewater have already figured out.

Do you have good mojo? ForKids’ new thrift store, Good Mojo, celebrated its Grand Opening on September 23rd as Councilman Barclay Winn, ForKids Board President Marie Finch and several staff members from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation cut the ceremonial red ribbon signaling the beginning of a new era at ForKids. In addition to the funding from Hampton Roads Community Foundation, several area businesses donated their time and expertise to make the store a reality including Pilato & Counts Interior Design, Hustead’s Canvas Creations, Any & All Graphics, Special Assignment and Tammy Deane & Company.

Good Mojo is open for business 7 days a week and needs your help by donating your gently used household items, volunteering your time and shopping like you mean it. Every dollar goes to support ForKids and the homeless families we serve. The store not only is open to the

public but it also allows ForKids to distribute “Mojo Bucks” to its participant families enabling them to earn much needed purchasing power as they progress through ForKids’ life changing programs. Arrange for free pickup for larger items at [email protected] or by calling the store at 622.1194 or you can arrange

a community donation drive and have the Good Mojo truck pick up stuff from your whole neighborhood, church or community group.

Give your time. Give your stuff. Shop ‘til you drop. Get Good Mojo.

Giving Homeless Children the “Write Start” to a successful School Year!

SMSgt. John Elstrom and his Maintenance Operations Squadron at LAFB helped to make the back-to-school transition easier for a lot of homeless children by providing them with backpacks and the essential supplies they needed to get their school year off on the right note. ForKids Children’s Services staff pictured here with SMSgt. Elstrom, clockwise are: Josh Hollaway, Stacey Gardner and Rico Robinson.

Hitting the Links to Raise Awareness and Money for Homeless Families

The 4th Annual Sean A. Lovas Memorial Golf Tournament was held on August 22, 2011 at Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club, and ForKids was the sole

recipient of the proceeds. Joe Lovas and Tom Atherton hosted the event.

ForKids was also honored to be a recipient of a portion of the proceeds from several long-running golf tournaments this fall, including the 10th Annual Monarch Bank Charitable Golf Tournament, the 25th Annual William E. Wood Charity Golf Tournament, the 11th Annual SEVA-CAI Golf Tournament and the 6th Annual Theta Chi Golf Tournament.

We’re Growing to Meet an Urgent Community Need

ForKids is happy to announce that we will soon be more than doubling our Permanent Supportive Housing for families with severe and chronic disabilities, going from 10 units to 21! The additional 11 units are being made possible with new federal funding through Norfolk and Chesapeake’s Continuum of Care and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These additional units are a desperately needed resource in South Hampton Roads that will allow us to help a greater number of families with disabilities stay together and receive the programs and services they need to gain independence. ForKids' existing 10 units of Permanent Supportive Housing are located on 38th Street in Norfolk. Locations for the additional units have not yet been determined.

ForKids salutes the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman’s Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD), not only for their service to our country, but also for the tremendous work they do volunteering at Good Mojo. Together the AIMD sailors have already accumulated nearly 200 hours since they began volunteering in late August and they’re still going strong.

U.S.S. Truman chaplain, LCDR Michael Bigelow, encouraged the sailors to choose an organization with which to volunteer while their ship was in the yard. AS2

Cory Chevalier, an aviation support equipment technician, chose to volunteer with our organization because of the work ForKids does to help homeless families and children. The sailors come to Good Mojo every Tuesday without fail, and ForKids is grateful for all of their hard work.

Chevalier said that the AIMD enjoys their time at Good Mojo and would like to help even more in the future. The AIMD has had a tremendous impact on the work that ForKids accomplishes. Volunteers like the men of the U.S.S. Truman AIMD make Good Mojo a success.

A BIG “Thank You!” to the selfless volunteers from Clark Nexsen, Dominion Enterprises, Sentara Health Systems and Virginia Natural Gas for all of their hard work! More than 100 volunteers eagerly rolled up their sleeves at the various ForKids properties and jumped right in, staining fences, cutting grass, trimming hedges, and doing whatever needed to be done to make the lives of homeless families and children a little nicer.

ForKids G.E.M.sGive Every Month

In November, Bank of America (BoA) was recognized as Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon. Market President Charlie Henderson shared some of BoA’s national and local successes: a 10-year $2 billion commitment to providing unrestricted core operating support to non-profits through their Building Excellence Initiative, and a commitment of more than 1.5 million volunteer hours nationally and more than 13,000 local volunteer hours annually. Wow. That is a huge commitment from one corporation.

After listening to Charlie, ForKids CEO, Thaler McCormick reflected on the impact of BoA on ForKids: “We were awarded BoA’s Neighborhood Builders Award under their Building Excellence Initiative in 2006, which bestows an astounding $200,000 unrestricted operating gift and cutting edge training on the lucky recipient. At the time, ForKids hoped to use our BoA funding to open a child development center, something that remains a fervent desire here. But a shelter in Suffolk and a multi-year recession pulled us down a different path, and BoA’s investment was used to build much needed service capacity and expand our afterschool programs.”

With the BoA leadership training, ForKids learned to think differently, and we were introduced to other programs all across the country. We discovered ForKids was good but we could be better, we could measure success differently, we could tackle problems of a different scale.

Five years after receiving the BoA Neighborhood Builder Award, ForKids has increased its service capacity by 500% and tripled the size of its afterschool programs. We are a different organization: regional, data-driven, more efficient and more effective.

At the luncheon, Angelica Light, retiring President of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, urged those in attendance to undertake transformative philanthropy. And that is exactly what Bank of America is doing through their unique Building Excellence Initiative. More than 600 organizations across the country have been awarded Neighborhood Builders Awards since 2004. For each recipient, BoA consistently invests in their leadership and provides venture capital to build their infrastructure. They are truly transforming non-profit capacity in the U.S.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy Mary Ludlow Home gives $1,000,000

Mary Ludlow Baroness von Zollikofer Altenklingen, a remarkable woman who lived more than 100 years ago, has had a profound impact on the families of ForKids over the last decade. Thanks to the foresight of a Board she entrusted with fulfilling her wishes, she will continue to impact the lives of our families for years to come. At her death in 1907 she generously started a home for homeless Norfolk women called the Mary Ludlow Home, which operated from 1918 to 1977. A trust developed from monies from the sale of the home have been distributed thoughtfully by a Board of Directors to continue to fulfill Mary Ludlow’s wishes.

Words cannot express the impact that Mary Ludlow Home funds have had on ForKids. Since the first gift to ForKids in 2003, Mary Ludlow Home provided almost $1 million in operational funding in the last

decade, allowing ForKids to meet the needs of homeless women and their families. In 2011, they ensured that this support would live on in perpetuity with a $1,000,000 endowment gift to ForKids when the foundation was dissolved. The fund will be housed at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and provides a lead gift in ForKids’ drive towards future sustainability. As you can see below, a lot has changed in the scope of ForKids since 2003 and none of this would have been possible without Mary Ludlow and the leadership of the Board of the Mary Ludlow Home.

(Check out the ForKids website for Mary Ludlow’s complete amazing story.)

William and his three children, all under the age of seven, had been homeless for nearly a year after their Suffolk home was destroyed by fire. He turned to ForKids when he could no longer afford to pay for the motel room they were living in. Within a few days of entering the program, William found a job, and in less than a month he and his family had their own rental house in downtown Suffolk.

Since the Suffolk House conversion last July, William’s family is one of six that have made the transition from homelessness to permanent housing within 30 days.

Case managers have worked tirelessly to assist

these families in accessing mainstream resources, securing employment or increasing work hours for others, connecting with pediatricians and locating safe and affordable housing.

Now in their new homes, our families continue to receive case management and therapy services for up to nine months to ensure stability. Afterwards,

ForKids helps link the families to resources in their communities to help them continue to solidify their self-sufficiency.

We’re also happy to announce that Hot Meals and Homework (HMHW) is now a reality for our kids in Suffolk and Western Tidewater. Volunteer tutors are currently working with children once a week

afterschool at our Suffolk House Service Center and then sending them home with a nutritious hot meal for their families after each session.

Thank you to our generous HMHW food donors, including The Plaid Turnip and Evergreen Apostolic Faith Church of God Live On. We couldn't do what we do without you!
