At Taylor’s Education Group, we recognise a connection between the well-being of our students and their learning

capacity. Placing well-being at the heart of the mission and the practices of our group, we recognise our students

as a whole person, not just a number or a thinking, but a human being with needs, issues, creative and emotional

potential. We intent on delivering our core purpose - To educate the youth of the world to take their rightful place as

global leaders. The yearning became stronger 2 years ago, with an urgent need to materialise our core purpose in a

more tangible way. A small peer group support called PODZ was created to enhance emotional well-being amongst our

students in Taylor’s University. We empathise that for some students an unfamiliar higher education environment can

be very stressful. Today, we have 27 number of PODZ and they are still growing strong. Through PODZ, we equipped

our students with life skills, such as self-awareness, the resilience to be effective, ability to discern well, and to be

emotionally balanced individuals so that they are able to manage uncertainty and changes.

We are committed to emotional well-being in its widest sense of equipping our students with the resources and skills

to set their path as a future leader in the community, We aim to create that state of well-being in which every student

realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is

able to make a contribution to her or his community.

I aspire for more students to join PODZ and reap its benefits as they embark on the path to being a happy and effective

global leader.

At Taylor’s University, we have a R.E.C.I.P.E to our success – the core values that underlie everything that

we do here. One of it is respecting and caring for one another. The emotional well-being of the Taylor’s

community is something we always give paramount importance to, in order for our establishment to

continue to provide quality education and a positive university life experience for all our students.

It is with that in mind that the Integrated Teaching and Life-long Learning Center at Taylor’s (INTELLECT) spearheaded

the Taylor’s Emotional Wellbeing Series. This series is aimed at cultivating and empowering Taylorians, both students

and staff, with emotional wellness and health to achieve emotionally balanced lifestyles.

The first speaker was Amanda Lindhout, who shared about her experience being held hostage for 460

days in southern Somalia and how she has found freedom in forgiveness. The second speaker, who was on

campus recently, is Prem Rawat who spoke on the topic “Perspectives on Peace”.

I would like to congratulate the organising team for continuing on this journey of promoting emotional well-being across

Taylor’s University with today’s 1st International Emotional Well-Being Summit. I hope that everyone comes away with

tips they could use in their daily lives at the end of this summit.

As institutions of higher learning, there is an onus on higher education providers to provide its students with the skills they

would need to succeed in the corporate world.

Taylor’s University strives to ensure that our students possess the necessary skills they require to face the challenges in

the workplace and have continuously engaged with leading employers in order to achieve this aim.

Through this effort, we birthed the SHINE Award Programme and 2nd Transcript which allows our students to develop

their future work skills, proficiencies and abilities required across different jobs and work settings through out-of-class

activities.

In addition to participation in activities that will enhance their soft skills, namely communication, collaboration, cultural ad-

aptation, critical thinking and problem solving as well as creativity and innovation, students who are enrolled in the SHINE

programme are also part of a small peer support group (PODz).

Through their involvement in the PODz initiative, these SHINE students are able to receive support in order to ensure that

their emotional well-being while in university is supported.

This initiative is something that these students will greatly benefit from and I would like to thank the organising team for

constantly looking for avenues to enrich people.

On behalf of everyone at the Integrated Teaching and Life-long Learning Centre at Taylor’s (INTELLECT), welcome to the

inaugural International Emotional Well-Being Summit.

This one day event aims to highlight the importance of emotional well-being in enhancing the quality of our lives. We hope

that through this platform, educators, staff, and students will have a space to share and learn from enriching experiences,

research findings, and hands-on discovery.

It is also our aspiration that everyone who participates in this summit will be able to learn methods to build their

emotional resilience and how through incorporation of this area in teaching and learning, students are also able to excel

better in their studies.

I hope the Summit will be an impactful one for each of you and that you will come away from this Summit with a deeper

understanding of emotional resilience and how mastering this value will build a greater appreciation for life.

This inaugural International Emotional Well-being Summit aims to highlight the importance of emotional well-being in en-hancing the quality of our lives. It provides educators, staff, and students with the space to share and learn from enriching experiences, research findings, and hands-on discovery. Sessions led by well-qualified and renowned local and internation-al professionals will demonstrate the relevance of developing emotional resilience in our quest to achieve emotionally bal-anced lifestyles today.

Through the summit, we hope to :-

1. Create awareness on the importance of Emotional Well-being among youths today by exposing the problem and the need for emotional resilience

Speakers Profile

09 Keynote Speaker

Dr. Jack Miller is a Professor with the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at OISE. His research

interests focus on holistic education, spirituality in education, contemplation in educational settings, and

curriculum orientations.

Dr. Miller has been working in the field of holistic education for over 35 years. He is author/editor of 18 books

on holistic learning and contemplative practices in education which include Whole Child Education, The

Holistic Curriculum, The Contemplative Practitioner, and most recently Teaching from the Thinking

Heart: The Practice of Holistic Education. His writing has been translated into nine languages. The Holistic

Curriculum has provided the program framework for the Equinox Holistic Alternative School in Toronto

where Jack has been involved in an advisory role.

He has worked extensively with holistic educators in Japan, Korea and Hong Kong for the past 20 years and

has been a visiting professor at universities in Japan and Hong Kong. In 2009 Jack was one of 24 educators

invited to Bhutan to help that country develop their educational system so that it supports the country’s goal

of Gross National Happiness.

Dr. Miller currently teaches courses on holistic education and contemplative education for graduate

students and students in Initial Teacher Education Program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education

at the University of Toronto where he is Professor.He is a recipient of the Harvard-Missouri Fellowship in

Teaching.

Mr Gangadara Vadivel is the current President of Befrienders Malaysia. He has been volunteering with the

Befrienders movement for the past 42 years. During his time there, he has trained volunteers by offering

them basic counseling skills and how to provide emotional support to callers.

His years of experience in support of Befrienders Malaysia has warranted him enough merit to present

papers and conduct workshop sessions on mental health awareness and suicide prevention talks at

several international conferences organised by Befrienders International, relevant Governmental and

Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) all across Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Kingdom and Malaysia.

He has also played a key role in organising several international and local conferences on the subject of

mental health and served as a Council member of the Consultative Committee for Mental Health Promotion,

Ministry of Health 2007 to 2012, Council member of the Suicide Prevention Technical Committee, Ministry

of Health, 2010 to 2012 and has been involved in a countrywide outreach service and projects that benefit

communities at high risk to suicide and event organised nature and environmental awareness trips for

students, youth groups and members of other NGOs.

Mr Gangadara Vadivel finds fulfillment in teaching and being involved in community service work and is

driven by passion, compassion, commitment and spirituality. He believes that everyone is an integral part

of nature and the environment and that respecting all living creatures as well as the inanimate is vital to

harmonious living and peace. He also believes his family is one of the most important pillars of his life.

11 Mindfulness Activity

Remington Cooney is a mindfulness teacher and Life Skills facilitator at Taylor's University. Originally from

Adelaide, South Australia, Remington has spent most of his life traveling the globe in pursuit of both his

academic and spiritual studies. Such endeavors has brought him to countries such as Singapore,

Japan, and Canada. Until recently, Remington has lived in Vancouver where he completed his Master of

Education at Simon Fraser University in Contemplative Education, specialising in the use of mindfulness

in higher education. He now resides in Kuala Lumpur, working at the Integrated Teaching and Life-long

Learning Centre at Taylor’s (INTELLECT) where he specialises in integrating mindfulness based initiatives in

education.

Dr. Xavier Vincent Pereira is a medical doctor, psychiatrist and certified psychotherapist. He believes that

healing should encompass the soul, mind and body. He also believes that to heal and to teach is a calling

to bring goodness to others. He has a strong commitment toward human growth and development, and

conducts sessions, seminars and workshops on various topics like self-awareness, interpersonal relating

and communication, healing, inner healing, psychosocial development and various mental health topics like

stress, depression and anxiety.

His parents, teachers and his faith community have had a strong influence on him and this has resulted in

him in making an option for the poor since an early age. He has worked with the less privileged since the age

of 13 in various ways. In 2007-08, Xavier and his spouse Dr. Sharuna Verghis founded the community based

organization Health Equity Initiatives (HEI). The organization serves asylum seekers and refugees in the Klang

Valley in the area of mental health.

Xavier is also the founder chair of the Catholic Counsellors and Therapists of Malaysia, and writes a column

in the Catholic Herald titled ‘Soul, Mind and Body’. Being an activist, Xavier was appointed to the Health and

Human Rights Committee of the Malaysian Medical Association. He is the 2015- 2016 chair of the committee.

In his free time Xavier enjoys sports, music, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Marian is a psychology graduate and has a master’s in guidance and counselling from Brunel University UK.

She is a qualified member of the British Psychological society, Australian Counselling Association and also an

associate member of the Malaysian Psychiatric Association. At present Marian is the Head of the Counsel-

ling and Psychological Services and the Health Services Centre. She has extensive experience working with

children and families, in child protection, social welfare, health, education and special needs in the UK and in

Malaysia. Marian is the process of completing her PHD thesis, - her focus being parental practices, negative

self-talk and student mental health.
