The Official YWAM Olympic OutreachIssue 10 August 2011

In an exciting development for the Olympic outreach, YWAM Norway has managed to rent a replica Viking ship for their Olympic outreach next year. The ship looks like a traditional Viking ship, and will be crewed by real Norwegians in replica Viking costumes! The question is, why?

Mapping out a visionKay Morten Aarskog, centre director at YWAM Borgen in the north of Norway, comments: “In many ways, the whole project started in a classic YWAM way – with a vision of a map! In my vision, I saw a map of Europe, with young people walking from Northern Europe to the rest of Europe, imparting the gospel and Christian values in all spheres of life and society. this happen was sailing a Viking ship from Norway to England to learn from history how it happened the first time around.”

As Kay shared his vision with others, so the leadership of YWAM Norway shared about taking 1,000 young people from Norway to England for the Olympic 2012 outreach through Mission Adventures, a short-term outreach ministry.

The two visions converged, and after negotiations with the ship owners, the Viking ship has became the figurehead of the whole YWAM Norway 2012 Olympic outreach effort.

“One thousand years ago, King Olav sailed from England to Norway to take the throne and brought the gospel with him,” Kay continues. “As a result of his and two more kings’ efforts, Christianity re-shaped the world-view of the Vikings and has become the foundations of the Nordic nations.

“Now we want to come to England in the opposite spirit to that of some of the Vikings, to say thank you for your part in bringing the gospel to us and to bless you in return.”

Stirring the watersThe plan is that the ship will sail from Oslo to Newcastle (one of the Olympic host cities) in July next year, and there will be a grand reception on Sunday 29 July 2012 in the city centre. While the ship

will undoubtedly cause something of a stir on arrival, it will also be at the heart of YWAM Norway’s evangelism in the city, as well as hosting seminars, lectures and social events together with local churches.

This is one Viking ship that will be welcomed to our shores!

Partnering for the gospelYWAM Norway is looking for partners in this project – in prayer, through giving, or even by joining the outreach. To find out more, contact Kay on [email protected] or visit www.oliengland.no. You can download a pdf brochure about the Viking ship project from www.forever2012.com.

Stories from our Olympic outreach pastYWAM Norway is historically linked with YWAM’s Olympic outreaches.

YWAM’s first Olympic outreach, at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, led to the birth of YWAM Norway – as well as one of our YWAM Germany centres, Hurlach.

So one of the key elements of Forever’s Olympic outreach effort – to establish new teams in all of the Olympic hosting cities – is building on the history of YWAM’s Olympic outreaches.

Praise • We have seen a number

of important openings in the Prayer area recently.

• Teams are already beginning to sign up for outreach during the period of the Games.

• We continue to have new vision and ideas, such as brick by brick (see page 3).

• YWAM Norway has managed to obtain a Viking ship for the Olympic outreach.

• For all those who have helped and continue to help as we translate publicity into other languages.

Prayer• For the Get Out and Soul

Survivor summer short-term mission outreaches as they continue through August, especially as most of the Forever team are involved in leading these.

• That many young people at the Soul Survivor outreaches and camps will get envisioned for doing Olympic outreach next year.

• For God’s favour as we continue to approach various organisations for funding.

• For new team members for all our Focus Areas, but especially in Prayer, Social Justice, and Youth and Children.

24/7 prayer in 2012Forever Prayer Coordinator Hayley Bullen introduces an exciting prayer initiative for the Olympic year that involves all of us.

Stories from our Olympic outreach pastAt the 1976 Montreal Olympics two Muslims from Guyana were approached in a park. As the gospel was laid out to them, they saw how their own religion was deficient in giving them a remission from guilt and redemption from sin. They were very interested and quite overwhelmed as two YWAMers gave them the facts from God’s Word and they indicated their eagerness to learn more about Christianity.

The nations are coming!75 nations and territories have visited forever2012.com since mid-May (that’s over one-third of the nations participating in the 2012 Games):

Nothing we do in this Olympic outreach will happen without prayer, so Forever is launching an online 24/7 prayer project called “brick by brick”, where everyone and anyone can pray for the UK in the Olympic year of 2012.

As we have sought God for direction next year, He has been speaking words such as foundations, 24/7 prayer, simplicity and unity. So it’s with great excitement that we are inviting the Church and YWAM to join us in continuous prayer for the UK in 2012. The focus of the prayer will be the Olympic outreach, making Jesus known, and releasing the next wave of missionaries from this nation to the nations.

What’s in a name? Why brick by brick? Ephesians 2:20–22 says that God is putting us together, brick by brick, stone by stone, with Jesus as the cornerstone, building a home where He can be comfortable. This is a great verse. Because it’s about God being welcome and it’s founded on Jesus and we all get to be involved.

As YWAM we’ve been involved in years of prayer before – it’s not a new idea. But it is powerful. When Christ’s people come together something always happens. It’s in YWAM’s and the Church’s DNA, that as we move in unity, as we convene, there is God’s blessing.

So join us. Be part of the transformation of the UK. Even

if you are unable to get to the Olympic outreach, you can still join us

in prayer. Add your brick to the foundation that God is building.

House of prayerGo to www.forever2012.com, click on “Pray” and then “Online 24/7 prayer for 2012”. brick by brick is under construction right now, but soon you’ll be able to check the 2012 calendar for free slots and sign up. The prayer pages of the site will also provide resources for prayer, setting up 24/7 prayer spaces, creative ideas for prayer rooms and prayer-walking maps.

Let’s get praying!

Lots of outreach reports ...

including summer outreaches ... and a report from the DTS Gathering in Weymouth & the Isle of Portland

Olympic outreach snippetsYWAM’s outreach in the Games in Montreal (1972), Los Angeles (1984) and Barcelona (1992) included street evangelism, street theatre, open-air church services, gospel drama and dance in the streets.

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics 1,000 YWAM volunteers were official greeters at the Olympic Village and 1,000 more helped with security and translating.

At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, YWAM set up a community festival and snowboarding clinics, for creative interaction. We helped many other organisations with their tasks; such as the United Bible Societies’ distribution of Towards a Goal (a sport-focused New Testament); helping the Salvation Army hand out drinks; giving directions; offering Olympic pins; housing Olympic athlete’s families; picking up rubbish; and much more.

“Hi, my name is Jonathan Franks. I am all the way from a village called Groby, near Leicester, England.

“My job role is two-fold. As joint Arts Coordinator (with Catherine Evans), much is still to be defined, but a lot will involve organising outreaches for events that Forever is involved with, as well as helping to establish a new YWAM team. In my other role in communications, I am helping to design newsletters and other publicity for Forever.

“As an artist and graphic designer I am passionate to see these things used in evangelism. I have also seen how the prophetic is a key to unlock people’s hearts.

“On my School Of Evangelism outreach the penny dropped, about how I can combine the prophetic with creativity. So now I want to use this combination to reveal to people what God really thinks about them.”

“I’m Amy Cook, and I am from Tennessee, USA. I will be working in administration and book-keeping for Forever.

“I joined Forever because I felt that God was calling me here, to serve this team for this season. I want to serve the members of this team! I had the opportunity to work with the team for six weeks after I completed my DTS last year, so I knew that I could use the skills and abilities that the Lord has given me to bless the team. My hope is that by being in the office, doing the administration stuff, I can free other team members to ‘go and do’. I also hope to find a way to serve in some sort of mercy ministry while I am here.

“I have been a huge fan of the Olympics all my life, especially the summer Games. Because of this interest in the Games, I am thrilled to be part of this project that has eternal significance.”

“People from all over the world are coming here to the UK, which gives us the incredible opportunity (and responsibility) to show them Jesus. I feel privileged to get to be a part of it.” - Amy Cook

“God spoke clearly: ‘Jonathan, I don’t want

to empty your wallet, I want you to empty

yourself.’ So here I am, and combined with

a desire for art/design evangelism this is a

perfect platform to see revival in England”

- Jonathan Franks
