What’s On for
Autumn 2019
6-8
We would like to offer a warm welcome to
Newbold Verdon Primary School, new to the
Alliance this year, and a welcome back to
Maplewell and Birch Wood Special Schools.
Good to have you all on board.
Welcome back to the
new academic year! I feel
very privileged to be part
of the Forest Way
Teaching School Alliance
and I am looking forward
to working with you all..

I am honoured to start
this academic year as
Head of Forest Way
School a role which now
includes the designation
for the Teaching School.
It is exciting for me to be
working with staff in such
a range of schools.
Although I have spent the
last 10 years at Forest
Way, prior to that my
career spanned
mainstream secondary,
primary, international and
further education settings.
I believe passionately that
through collaboration,
supporting each other
and sharing practice and
experience we can
improve outcomes for all
of our pupils.

New to our CPD programme
NPQML, SL & H - we are
once again running these
programmes in conjunction
with Thomas Estley Learning
Alliance and have a bursary for
FWTSA schools to reduce
costs. Details have already
been sent out to schools.
We have designed a fantastic
programme of CPD for
FWTSA schools this year,
following feedback we have
received, and are delighted to
be offering some new
programmes.
Watch out for our new 2 day
course to Support Positive
Behaviour for learning,
offering advice, training and
support. Watch out also for
details of our Outreach
Support Service where
support can be given to
schools when working with
pupils with a range of learning
difficulties.
We are delighted that
we have recruited 27
trainees to our SD
programme this year, it
has been a hard year
for trainee recruitment
nationally but FWTSA
seem to be bucking the
trend.
Thanks to Sheila
Dennis (Secondary
Programme Lead) and
Heidi Malliff (Primary
Programme Lead) for
School Direct Programme
2019/20
their outstanding work
and to the support from
our member schools,
who mentor and support
the students during their
first year. We wish them
luck in their first
placement.

Once again we had a lovely
celebration afternoon in July
with our class of 2018/19
students and some heads and
mentors came along too.
Following our successful 2018/19
programme we are delighted
that we have recruited 12 of our
trainees into teaching posts
within the Alliance.
Good luck to those and all our
trainees as they embark on their
NQT year.
Our Science Learning
Partnership with STEM
Learning continues to grow and
evolve.
We are delighted to announce
that Jane Elmer will be the new
Primary and Secondary Lead
from Autumn 2019.
We have a number of exciting
science courses planned over
the next term, to inspire
teachers in the world of
science, which will be
advertised in due course.
Science Learning Partnership - STELLAR -
Primary Science Network These network sessions are
facilitated by Nicola Beverely
and are now into their third
year. Held at Forest Way
School, there are 6 sessions
over the year, 3 Network Meetings for Science Subject
Leaders and 3 Workshop
sessions for teachers, TAs or
subject leads. Once a school
has enrolled they can send
however many staff they want
to each session all for the
bargain price of £175.
In addition enrolled schools will
also be entitled to a 50% discount off STELLAR Courses
for the whole year. The first session starts on 26
September - details have
recently been distributed to
schools.
School Direct Information Events
Our first School Direct
Information Event for this year
will be held on Thursday 24
October at Forest Way
School.
We have one other event
booked, and are hoping to
hold daytime events at local
schools again, details to be
finalised and distributed
shortly.
These events have proved to
be one of the best ways to
promote our Teacher Training
Programme and recruit
trainees teachers to eventually
work in Alliance schools.
We would appreciate it if
schools could also promote
these events, to staff members
and parents. Please contact
you would like us to send you
promotional materials to
include in your newsletters.

Forest Lodge - Two New Classrooms for Forest Way School
Forest Lodge is a new
modular extension to Forest
Way School. Comprising two
classroom’s, it has increased
capacity to be able to
welcome more children to
the school.
The project began at Easter
and took just over four
months to transform the
existing space into a fully
functioning classroom
This new facility was funded
by a significant contribution
from Leicestershire County
Council with the rest being
achieved from Patrons of the
School., and through fund-
raising with special thanks to
all the staff who so bravely
threw themselves out of a
plane to help raise money.
The
classroom is sited next to
The Croft, which is used by
Post 16 students, and is also where the FWTSA
office is situated.
Visitors to Forest Way
School will now see a
dedicated footpath marked
in the car park for the
students to use as they make
their way, independently to
Forest Lodge and The Croft
from the main school.
