Service of Worship

November 8, 2015 at 11:00 am Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.

If you are visiting, please join us in wearing a name tag so that we might greet you. Our ushers have hearing devices, large print editions of the bulletin,

activity bags for children staying in worship, and directions to our nursery for babies and young children.

Meditation for Reflection And maybe most of all because if another man dies so that I can live, it imposes a terrible burden on my life. From that point on, I cannot live any longer just for myself. I have got to live also somehow for him, as though in some sense he lives through me now as, in another sense, I live through him. If that he would have done with his life is going to be done then I have got to do it. My debt to him is so great that the only way I can approach paying it is by living a life as brave and beautiful as his death.

Greeting Our God with Joy

Call to Worship (from the Heidelberg Catechism) Elder Diana Woodbridge Leader: Why is the Son of God called Jesus, which means Savior? People: Because he saves us from our sins, and because salvation is to

be sought or found in no other. Leader: But why are you called a Christian? People: Because through faith I share in Christ and thus in his anointing,

so that I may confess his name, offer myself a living sacrifice of gratitude to him, and fight against sin and the devil with a free and good conscience throughout this life and hereafter rule with him in eternity over all creatures.

Leader: Why do you call him our Lord? People: Because, not with gold or silver but at the cost of his blood, he

has redeemed us body and soul from sin and all the dominion of the devil, and has bought us for his very own.

Leader: Christians, followers of our Lord, let us worship God together!

Renewing Our Relationship with God

Prayer of Confession (from Psalm 51) Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgement.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Time of Silent Confession

Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) John Bell

Affirming the Good News in Our Lives

Assurance of Pardon (From the Heidelberg Catechism) Leader: What do you believe concerning the forgiveness of sins? People: That, for the sake of Christ’s reconciling work, God will no

more remember my sins or the sinfulness with which I have to struggle all my life long; but that he graciously imparts to me the righteousness of Christ so that I may never come into condemnation.

Thanks be to God!

A Huge Thank You!!!

We would like to thank all of you who so generously donated

cleaning supplies for Family Promise. We were able to make

15 Move Out bags for families as they move to their new

apartments. In addition to the bags we were able to donate

70 rolls of paper towels and 90 rolls of toilet paper. We took

the donation to the Kinsman site and were accompanied by

2 librarians from the Coventry Library who provided a literacy

program for the families. It was a wonderful evening.

This is a quote from a thank-you note sent to us by Thea

Hanson Mozingo, Volunteer Coordinator. "...thanks to Forest

Hill for your help and support and super generous donation!"

We are planning to do this again in January, so watch for an

announcement.

The Lessons

Hebrews 9: 24-28

For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Next Sunday: 1 Samuel 1: 4-20; 1 Samuel 2: 1-10; Hebrews 10: 11-14, 19-25; Mark 13: 1-8. Set aside time each day for prayer and study. As you read the lessons for the week, consider how they settle or challenge you? What image or word catches your attention? Keep notes of your observations in a journal.

Haiti Mission Trip Report Today the Haiti Mission Team of Jeff Smith, Barb Cloud, Dean and Judy Sieck, Steve Sedam, Carol and Mark Weddell, Kermit Lind, and Deanne and John Lentz are worshipping in Haiti!

After landing in Port au Prince on Thursday, the group flew to Pignon on Friday. The group is teamed up with Haiti Outreach, which partners with Haitian communities to dig and maintain fresh water wells.

Your contributions last year raised over $15,000 to build a village well. Our team will be present at a well dedication celebration in Gabo.

Keep the mission team in your prayers! They will be back on Friday and in church next Sunday.

Check the website for links to Kermit’s blog of the activities in Haiti.
