Forest Biomass, Green Energy?• 100% renewable energy• Simple way to store the solar energy• Neutral CO2 balance• Local energy source• Employment potential in rural areas• “Crisis free” energy• Cleaner landscape and faster

reforestation after cleaning the site• Answer to energy peak consumption

FORENERGY at a glance• This project aims at developing some systems for

largelarge--scale collection of forest residualscale collection of forest residual• It is a demonstration projectdemonstration project• Officially started the 1st of May 2001,

it will last 3 years3 years•• 7 research partners7 research partners are involved• The total budget of the project is 4.9 M4.9 M€€• The EU commission will finance 35% of this

budget (i.e. 1.72 M€)

Vision of the teamOnce the logistics of the material chain will beoptimised, power plants will be very efficientpower plants will be very efficientandand cleanclean, especially when designed to use only, especially when designed to use onlywood aswood as theirtheir fuelfuel.

It will also be possible to use the existing methodsin harnessing energyenergy--woodwood plantationsplantations that willthereby becomebecome more productivemore productive.

We believe that these are the key elements to takebiobio--energyenergy productionproduction toto aa competitive levelcompetitive level for thefirst time ever.

Objectivesto conduct high level research on the development of renewabledevelopment of renewableand clean bioand clean bio--energy technologyenergy technology

to model, develop and optimise the complete energy chainmodel, develop and optimise the complete energy chainfrom the forest to the consumers

to develop an energy system producing fuel for the power plant ata competitive pricecompetitive price (<8 EURO/Mwh at the plant)

to develop an energy system that is neutral concerning the COneutral concerning the CO22

emissionsemissions and which keeps other emissions on a lower levelthan what the regulations require

to develop machinery and equipmentdevelop machinery and equipment to serve these purposes

to conduct tests to demonstrate the applicability in severaldemonstrate the applicability in severalEuropean countriesEuropean countries

Work division• The co-ordinator, Timberjack, will develop methods and

machinery for collecting and handling the material.• UPM-Kymmene as an end-user will test the developed

technology at their plants.• Shotton Paper and Caledonian Paper company will use and

modify this technology for the UK plants.• Research involving methods, economics, logistics and

emissions will be conducted by the partners in Austria, (ARCS),France, (CEMAGREF and AFOCEL) and Italy (IRL).

• CEMAGREF will contribute to collecting equipment design andIRL will study the possibilities of adapting this technology tothe Southern European conditions. ARCS will make a “LCA”,Life cycle assessment on the components of the chain.

• While working, the harvesterharvesteraccumulates the slash on pilesaccumulates the slash on piles(faster to feed into bundlingmachine)

• Normally, the goal is to getslash from 2slash from 2--3 trees on a pile3 trees on a pile

• Piles are made by the striproads and machines should notdrive over the slash!

• Collecting slash is normallymade only on fertile spruceclear cut sites

• The bundling machine will produce “slash logs” that are> 3m long> 3m long and about 0,60,6--0,8m in diameter0,8m in diameter.

• Bundles are wrapped with strings in every 40 cm.

Scenarios for tomorrow

Northern Europe:• big CHP plants like

Pietarsaari• industrial networks

connected for steam& electricity

• municipal networksconnected for heating

> economy of scale &economy of scale &superior logisticssuperior logistics

Southern Europe:• small and medium

CHP plants• municipal networks

mainly connected forheating

Different needs,different solutions

• The main idea is to develop some generalgeneralconceptsconcepts that we can duplicate and adaptduplicate and adaptto very local conditionsto very local conditions

• It means that a lot of parameters have to beconsidered during the design phase of theproduct platforms

• Thanks to our very extended network ofpartners (FORENERGY, other projects andlocal dealers), we should be able to come upwith optimal solutions: economic, economic, productive and environmental friendly!productive and environmental friendly!

Conclusions• The whole chain working at the moment for UPM-

Kymmene in Pietarsaari is very satisfying(7 to 97 to 9 €€//MWhMWh). It consumes less than 3% of the3% of thetotal quantity of energytotal quantity of energy produced.

• Timberjack energy technology (720 & Fiberpac) hasshown itself very well adapted for Scandinavianconditions. Our goal is now to adapt it to southernOur goal is now to adapt it to southerneuropeeurope conditions taking into account all of itsconditions taking into account all of itsvery particular characteristicsvery particular characteristics (France, Italy,Spain, Austria, Germany, Eastern Countries…)
