Roman

_ _

Two young men, friends since early childhood, speed away on their trip into life. Until the accident. Uli believes ercely that Hannes will awake from his coma, soon. He visits him daily, even though his community service at the “Bird’s Nest”, a mental health clinic, is quite demanding. At the same time, he has this hunger for life, for love and sex as well as for a deep friendship – and the hope that everything will soon be back the way it was before the accident.

And in his own way, he tries to bring Hannes back to life: Every day, Uli makes his friend take part in his daily life, always in hope for a tiny twitch, a blink, a word of recognition. Every day, Uli writes him letters so that Hannes will be up to date later on, when he is back with him. But in between, he is overwhelmed by an irrepressible rage, rage at the soulless hi-tech medicine, the helpless-arrogant doctors, at Hannes’ parents who wallow in self-pity and rage at Han-nes himself, who is just lying there, without showing a single sign of life…

A murder rocks the camp in northern Finland where Tilly is supposed to be constructing an igloo youth hostel with a group of ten other troubled adole-scents. e victim is a girl who Tilly admired — a girl who styled herself in exactly the same way she did. It’s clear that Tilly was the intended victim; she’s in no doubt about that. She hatches a plan to lure the killer onto thin ice — but her ploy is only partially successful. In order to nd the real identity of the murderer and discover his true motive, Tilly has to investigate her distant past and uncover the sinister secret of her own identity.

A rst-class literary thriller that explores a disturbing subject — violence towards children — and features a heroine reminiscent of Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander.

Nicki and Canon are meant for each other. So when Canon disappears, Nicki sets o on a quest to nd him - and uncovers a dark secret in his life that leads her into totally alien territory. A truly magical love story that walks a brilliant tightrope between trendy city life and the breathtaking atmosphere of a magical realm, creating an incredible hypnotic e ect from the very rst page.

“You’re a damned liar!” Just as Louis de Montesanto is about to start his lecture in front of the venerable Royal Geographical Soci-ety, a heckler exposes him as a charlatan. e small man with the massive head was born in a small Swiss mountain village in 1849 under the name of Hans Roth, and he went on to lead a truly ad-venturous life, which included, among other things, working for the governor of Western Australia. He returns to London many years later, clothed in rags and telling a story that is odder than anything a person could make up. He claims that he was appoint-ed chief of an aboriginal tribe, and that he spent years studying their culture and traditions. His quickly published autobiography becomes a worldwide bestseller - until the word gets out about how much he has embellished his daring life story.

Michael Hugentobler cra s a ctional life story around a man who actually did exist. ere never was a Louis de Montesanto, but there was once a Louis de Rougemont, the alias for Henri Louis Grin, upon whose fascinating story this novel is loose-ly based. e Wild Word Magazine, in which de Rougemont published his accounts until he was uncovered as a humbug, once wrote: “Truth is stranger than ction, but de Rougemont is stranger than both.”

A picaresque novel about the striving for ful llment and freedom, and about the fact that truth is o en a question of perception, especially for a very small person like Louis, who is constantly struggling to remain independent from the large, wide world.

“You look very pretty today,” Gregor told the clerk at the indoor pool. A tiny, astonished smile brightened the woman’s face…

Gregor is fourteen and somehow di erent. He wears strange clothes, has a very strict sense of tidiness, loves garish patterns, and knows all of the day’s weather reports. Usually awkward in everyday situations, he addresses the people he encounters with disarming forthrightness. When Gregor’s mother is injured in a serious accident, Gregor must move in with his aunt and uncle. Initially, Judith and Achim have no idea what to do with the “nutjob.” However, with his unconventional manner, Gregor manages to charm a smile from even the unfriendliest of neighbors. And suddenly everyone starts talking to each other again - even Judith and Achim.

Albert only ever called Fred Fred, never Father. Fred is a child trapped in the body of an old man, he spends his time reading encyclopaedias, waves at green cars and guards his prize possession jealously. Albert is 22, grew up in a chil-dren’s home and never knew his mother. Somehow he senses that Fred is the only one who can help him nd out more about his background. But Fred has only ve months le to live...

Kloeble received grants from the Künstlerhaus Ahrenshoop and the Ger-man Literature Fund for his work on this novel.

Lizzie Doron meets the founders of the Peace Movement—enemies and adver-saries turned allies; Palestinians who wanted to kill Jews and Israelis who re-fused to defend their country. She met with them over the course of a year, and the result is a moving document about former radicals who came to represent a perspective that remains steadfast against senseless hatred.

Lizzis Doron is a writer in the tradition of Svetlana Alexijevitch and com-bines the intense voices of oral history with the dramatic composition of a novel.

Bärbel Wardetzki

Is This Supposed to Be Love? How to Eff ectively Escape a Narcissistic Relationship

Bärbel Wardetzki is one of the top experts on the subject of narcissism.

The connection between the inside perspective (the depiction of the relationship through the eyes of the woman who was in it) and the com-mentary from an experienced psychologist is equally enlightening and helpful for those who find themselves in similar relationships.

23

A er spending twenty years in a marriage in which she prima-rily just “functioned,” Sonja R. falls head over heels in love. As emotionally starved as she is, A. gives her everything she has been missing for years. However, Sonja has found herself in the arms of a narcissist, a man who wants to monopolize her and who syste matically destroys her sense of self-worth. is narcissistic relationship lasts for nine years, until Sonja R. is nally able to break away from it a er many attempts.

Bärbel Wardetzki provides commentary on the various phases of this relationship from the psychological-psychoanalytical per-spective. She distinguishes healthy from malignant narcissism and describes the warning signs. e main thrust of this book relates to the question of what compels women to remain in destruc-tive relationships twisting the truth and lying to themselves as a protective mechanism. Wardetzki clari es the behavioral patterns, and describes in detail the processes of escape and stabilization.

Destination: the world

Achill Moser, “passionate globetrotter and go-getter,” invites us to participate in his fascination for the sublime natural environment. In an increasingly swi ly turning world, we need nature as a counterbalance and measure for our own existence, as well as a source of inspiration and healing. Forests, mountains, rivers, seas, and deserts are outstanding examples of our planet’s habitats. ey in uence us physically and spiritually - every path into the natural world is also an exploration of each individual’s metaphysical topography.

Achill Moser has a good eye for the exceptional, but he is also sensitive to the simple joy we take from being on the road. He insightfully describes the feeling that is generated whenever we submerge ourselves in the vast breadth of nature and nd ourselves in the company of new thoughts.

“We don’t need nature with its amazing diversity as an economic factor. We need nature for the good it does our souls.” Achill Moser

From the four zones, two nations emerged

At the Potsdam Conference in July and August 1945, the “Big ree” - the Bri-tish Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the American President Harry Truman, and the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, discussed the future borders of Europe, the reparation payments, and the administration of the occupation zones. ere was little agreement on any of this, and thus, the Cold War began. e centennial of the Revolution: an extraordinary historical overview

On November 7, 1918, the House of Wittelsbach fell from power in Bavaria, followed in short succession by all of the other German royal houses. Prior to the founding of the Republic on November 9, Kurt Eisner established the Ba-varian Republic as an independent state. is groundbreaking event paved the way for the rise of National Socialism. Appel recreates the starting point of this historical drama through vivid memories and contemporary journal accounts. is study describes the roots of the Revolution, the last night of the monarchy, and the subsequent decisive days. For the Goethe Society - founded in 1885 in Weimar - even before the Machtergreifung in 1933, he was less of the enlightened humanist and more of the conservative nationalist. A er Hitler’s rise to power, the society promoted a signi cantly “browner” image of Goethe with increasing vehemence. Eventually, the Olympian was roughly brought into line to serve the regime’s purposes. e privileges of a designated “world role” combined with increasing entanglements yield a fascinating dra-matic curve to this story.
