The World Book of LoveLeo Bormans

• A record of worldwide scientific research on love• Full of practical advice • Science presented in an appealing, accessible manner

The World Book of Love will take you to the heart of romantic love. What do we know about love? Though cultural differences occur, but love itself has always existed. It is universal and can take many forms. It is an extremely powerful emotional state. But we all know that the fi re doesn’t burn forever.

After the worldwide success of The World Book of Hap-piness, editor in chief Leo Bormans has spent two years studying the international scientifi c research on love. He succeeded in engaging the most brilliant scientists and unexpected newcomers to describe in their own words what we fi nally know about love.

No butterfl ies and sunsets. 100 researchers from 40 different countries share in this book what we know about attachment, passion and commitment; about jealousy, abuse and pressure; from Darwin to science-fi ction; from hidden secrets to open sex. They explain the system and unveil the mystery. In a global and rap-idly changing world we can all learn from each other. From China and Japan to America, Europe and Africa.

Leo Bormans is the chief editor of the school maga-zines Klasse and Yeti. He is also one of the founders of the ‘Week of the Good Day’ and the ‘Club of Positive People.’ For The World Book of Love he conducted a two year research of numerous studies on Love.

The World Box of HappinessLeo Bormans

• The wisdom of 100 happiness experts now collected in a beautiful gift box• This ‘treasury of happiness’ contains 52 cards, each with two tasks • Work on your own happiness!

Everyone starts with a certain ‘set point’ for happiness. And although everyone’s starting point is determined genetically and influenced by the environment one grows up in, we can all increase our own happiness, by just making an effort!

The World Box of Happiness provides the tools to make that effort. On each card the reader will find two tasks that will help him to become a more positive person and obtain a happier life. The second task is somewhat harder to fulfil than the first.

The tasks are based on scientific research, which has shown that people are happier, healthier and more successful when they have an optimistic view on life. Holding in mind the basic elements that increase one’s feeling of happiness; pleasure, contentment and satisfaction in a meaningful life, the tasks invite you to work on your own happiness.

The happiness cards fit perfectly in your wallet and with the magnet that is included, you can also hang them on your refrigerator or your desk.

Leo Bormans is the editor in chief of the school mag-azines Klasse and Yeti. He is also one of the founders of the ‘Week of the Good Day’ and the ‘Club of Positive People’. For The world book of happiness he conducted a two year research of over 8000 studies on happiness, stored at the University of Rotterdam.

The World Book of Happiness records the conclu-sions of a unique worldwide project. In this book, 100 experts in positive psychology, from Iceland to South Africa and from China to Australia, share their knowl-edge about happiness. Make your Life Flow Marlies Terstegge

• A book on the theory and practice of flow psychology, an important part of positive psychology

• People with ‘flow’ are happier and more connected• A practical guide which offers concrete strategies to become

more peaceful and conscious in life

Most likely you have already experienced the sensa-tion yourself: you were so focused on a task it made you completely forget time and place. This blissful feeling is called ‘fl ow’.

The theory of fl ow teaches you to recognise and appreciate your talents and desires. People who are close to their core and are able to determine their own authentic life mission, not only feel happier, but are also more connected to others and to the world around them.

Positive psychology has become increasingly infl u-ential and successful over the years. Its supporters believe that to acquire a more balanced psyche it is

essential to be aware of one’s thoughts and sensa-tions. Instead of trying to reach distant goals, people looking for fl ow should approach life from a position in the present. This will allow them to deal with the problems of life in a peaceful manner.

Marlies Terstegge is a mental health psychologist and psychotherapist. She is a scientifi c co-worker at the Dutch Institute for Social Sexological Research. In her own practice for ‘fl ow and inspiration’ she guides clients on their way to a happier life. She teaches courses and gives lectures about fl ow, happi-ness and positive psychology.

Increase Your Self Confi denceFeel Good and Perform Better

Robert Haringsma

• An accessible self-help book for building self confidence• A scientifically based practical book• For everyone who is unsure professionally, socially or intimately

Psychologist Robert Haringsma combines theory with a great number of exercises from his own practical experience with clients. As a stutterer, he himself had to learn to build the confi dence to speak in public.

A high level of self confi dence, says Haringsma, consists of a combination of skill (performance) and a proper sense of worth (talents) – a balance between these two providing stable self-confi dence.

Robert Haringsma studied psychology. His disser-tation dealt with the effi cacy of self-help books. He is currently director of the Institute for Positive Psy-chology, where he is a trainer and coach for personal development. His doctorate at the Free University Amsterdam is in the fi eld of self-confi dence.

Stay with MeOur Struggle for Power and Intimacy

in Relationships

Rika Ponnet

• An innovative and insightful look at relationships• Packed with practical tips and advice

In many relationships, after the initial novelty wears off, a power struggle develops. Little things start to become annoying, losing too much of oneself becomes a worry and a certain routine enters the relationship. But how do you keep this struggle from leading to the end of the relationship?

Illustrated by practical examples, Rika Ponnet reveals the deeper causes of relationship problems and shows how bonding styles are often at the root of problems.

Why do opposites attract but often grow apart with the passing of time? Why do many people continu-ously choose a ‘wrong’ partner? And why is disa-greement and struggle often a hidden cry for more intimacy?

Rika Ponnet is a sexologist. She and her husband Mark Boeykens (psychologist), run the agency ‘relationship Duet’. As a therapist, she has helped numerous singles and couples. She is a sought after relationship expert in the media and contributes regular columns to Het Nieuwsblad Magazine, a Bel-gian magazine and Libelle, a Dutch magazine.

The mindfulness theory has become increasingly in-fl uential and successful in recent years. Its support-ers believe that to acquire a more balanced psyche, it is essential to be aware of one’s thoughts and sensations. Instead of trying to reach distant goals, mindful people should approach life from a position in the present. This will allow them to deal with the problems of life in a peaceful manner.

In this reference work on the mindfulness theory, Maex elaborately discusses how to reach a state of inner awareness without passing judgement on oth-ers. His techniques focus on a self-criticising attitude and sometimes have surprising results. Mindfulness is the perfect guide for a more peaceful and con-scious life experience!

Edel Maex, a psychiatrist at the Middelheim hospital in Antwerp, introduced the mindfulness theory in Belgium. His group lectures and workshops are a great success.

Sit Still! Instructions for raising hyperactive children

Theo Compernolle, Robert Vermeiren & Ria Van Den Heuvel

• How to educate hyperkinetic children• A fully revised and updated version of this educational classic• Completed with the most recent scientific findings

Since the day it was fi rst published, thousands of par-ents and teachers have gratefully used the fi rst edition of Sit Still!, a guide on how to deal with hyperkinetic children.

Some kids never sit still, not even when they are asked a hundred times. Parents of hyperkinetic children often fi nd it diffi cult to give them an adequate education. Regular educational methods don’t seem to apply and society often stereotypes hyperkinetic children as ‘dif-fi cult’ and ‘not well guided’.

Parents at their wits end can fi nd help in this scientifi -cally based yet easily accessible and practical book. It is an indispensable guide for raising children with ADHD and ADD.

Sit still! is the result of years of cooperation with parents of hyperkinetic children. The book provides answers to questions such as: What causes hyperkinetic behav-iour? How do you teach a child to break out of a certain behaviour? How will hyperkinetic behaviour evolve in later life?

Prof. Dr. Theo Compernolle is a former extraordi-nary professor at the Free University of Amsterdam.

Prof. Dr. Robert Vermeiren is professor of child and youth psychiatry at the Free University of Amsterdam.

Ria Van Den Heuvel is director of the ‘Sit Still’ knowledge and expertise centre.

The role of parents today is more important than ever. In the twenty-fi rst century there is a great deal of commotion in the lives of children and teenag-ers, but there are not a lot of certainties. Therefore, parents should strive to offer a steady stronghold for their offspring.

ShatteredHow World War I Shaped our World

Marc Reynebeau

• A broader perspective of the history of the First World War• Discusses the major high-impact effects of the First World War• The First World War, covered from a much wider perspective than only that

of the soldiers

Shattered strives to provide a more complete picture of the history of the First World War and to demon-strate its signifi cance. The First World War is not iso-lated in time. It may have started suddenly and seem-ingly by accident, but it has a prehistory and, above all, a decisive infl uence on the times that followed. The war was the moment when the old world fell apart unexpectedly and the beginning of an attempt to regroup the fragments into a new relationship. This book demonstrates that the First World War profoundly changed the viewpoint and the balance of power in the World and played a signifi cant role in shaping the history of the twentieth century. Ad-ditionally, the book shows that the First World War is linked to a range of critical developments and events, such as state nationalism. The book also shows the consequences of the outcome of the war, which led to the emergence of a new world order.

Reynebeau wants to bring to life the First World War in a broader context, not only based on the existing historiography. He includes the actual human expe-rience, not only how soldiers experienced the war, but how people on the home front experienced the time in the war zones, occupied or neutral countries. Poems, novels, letters, diaries and newspaper articles serve as important witnesses.

Marc Reynebeau holds an MA in history from Gent University. He is a senior writer and columnist with the Belgian daily De Standaard and is frequently invit-ed to speak on radio and television and at universities in Belgium and The Netherlands. He wrote several books on Belgian history and on the theory of history, e.g. Een geschiedenis van België (‘A history of Belgium’, 2003, 20092; French edition: Histoire belge, 2005) and Het nut van het verleden (‘The Sense of the Past’, 2006).

Friend on FoePaul Van Damme

• Cartoons with a clear message and a reflection of the spirit and convictions of their time

• Highly rare cartoons from private collections!

Friend on Foe uses a series of about 200 keywords and aims to clarify the history of the First World War. Each keyword is illustrated by one or more cartoons, which are analysed from a historical perspective. These images have been selected on grounds of both historical relevance and aesthetic appeal. They pay equal attention to both sides of the front line, to allies and enemies. Nearly all cartoons have been retrieved from private collections and have seldom (or never) been published to date.

The Last Witnesses of WWI Philip Vanoutrive

• A touching book, containing the ultimate testimonies of 1914-1918• 40 now very old, but still very energetic men and women tell

about their experiences• With dozens of wonderful pictures

40 men and women who were children during WWI talk about their experiences. Gruesome anecdotes about death and destruction are often mentioned for the fi rst time. But the men and women also have touching, beautiful and even funny stories to hand down to the next generations.

For some, the war was a ‘good time’ – fi nally some-thing happened! But for others it meant the end of their childhood. Their dreams exploded like a grenade.

These 40 people certainly have one thing in common: the war caused grief and traumas which have never left their minds.

Philip Vanoutrive has worked as a freelance journal-ist and photographer for over 30 years. In 1989 he won the fi rst prize in the category ‘Nature’ of ‘World Press Photo’. His photo and text documentaries are published in Het Nieuwsblad, De Standaard and Eos Magazine, and are distributed worldwide by Hol-landse Hoogte (NL) and Sipa Press (FR). In his docu-mentaries on WWI there are no friends or enemies, no winners, no losers. Philip Vanoutrive focuses on the little man who suffered without ever being heard.

Elsie and Mairi Ivan Petrus

• A graphic novel about two very remarkable life stories during the First World War

• Based on diary excerpts that reveal with passion the daily lives of two carers on the frontlines.

• About fighting spirit, courage, perseverance but also doubt, homesickness and love

The graphic novel Elsie and Mairi - Angels of Flanders Fields tells the remarkable story of two strong women during the First World War.

During the First World War Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm joined a British ambulance corps which had its base in Furnes. Later they settled closer to the frontline with their nursing station, the ‘Cel-lar House’ in Pervyse. The nursing station was well known among the soldiers and the army leadership. With great courage, fi ghting spirit and love they cared for and transported wounded soldiers at the front. Their exploits were decorated by Albert I.

The two women also found love at the front. During the war Elsie married a Belgian offi cer, who was also Baron – a brief and stormy marriage. Mairi became engaged to a British pilot who tragically crashed shortly afterwards.Their diaries lay bare their feelings and were used in London in the book ‘Cellar House’.

Ivan Petrus is an artist and has worked on various comics, animations and theatre. The First World War, the fi rst photographed and fi lmed war, is his passion.

1914-1918 through German EyesAndré Gysel

• A beautiful collection of pictures, postcards and testimonies of German soldiers during WWI

• A peek into their daily lives abroad• Written by war expert André Gysel

In testimonies of war victims of WWI, German soldiers are invariably portrayed as rough and brutal. But were many of them not just boys who were caught up in a confl ict and longed for peace? How these men spent their lives in an unknown environment under a severe regime is defi nitely an interesting topic.

1914-1918 through German eyes has collected many images, pictures, postcards and eyewitness reports of German soldiers. The book is subdivided into several themes which cover all aspects of the soldiers’ daily lives: the combat experiences on the front, lines of defence and trenches, but also their diets, friend-ships and sexual escapades. All images and docu-ments are situated historically and provided with a concise commentary.

André Gysel is a history teacher in Dixmuide and a tourist guide in the West Corner. He is interested specifi cally in everything about the First World War. Previously, he published the beautiful war picture book 365 pictures: 1914-1918, together with Julus Serafi en D’Haene.

darwin at the Supermarket Or how evolution infl uences our behaviour on a daily basis Mark Nelissen

• Another book on Darwin by behavioural biologist Mark Nelissen• Humorously written, but based on scientific research• The Theory of Evolution in our daily lives

Why do female waiters get a bigger tip than their male colleagues? What is the purpose of pain? Are we in fact all homosexual? Do we discriminate our children?

In Darwin at the supermarket Mark Nelissen fi nds numerous examples of Darwin’s theory of natural selection. His fi ndings lead to surprising insights. Darwin at the supermarket, a humorously written book that, at the same time, has a profound scientifi c basis, is an eye-opener for Darwin’s inheritance and helps to explain human behaviour.

A Spanish bar. My fat neighbour fi nishes his beer and asks the waiter what he owes him. ‘Dos euros’, the young waiter smiles. The fat man gives him a coin of 2 Euros and gets ready to leave when he sees that the waiter hands his apron to his successor, a blond, enthusiastic waitress. The fat man looks at her and sits down again. He orders another

‘cerveza’ and asks her what he owes her. Instead of 2 Euros, he generously gives her 3 Euros and winks at her. She hap-pily takes her tip and walks away. Nowadays children are protected, but in ancient times they weren’t. The child’s chances of survival increased substantially if the mother got help. All help was welcome, especially from the father. The more the father had to offer, the more chances of survival the child had. In other words, the father had to be rich. There was one little problem: a woman could not always see if a man was rich enough to provide for her and her imaginary baby. So she turned to the man’s reputation. Men who were generous had a reputation of having enough resources.

Mark Nelissen is a professor in behavioural biology at the University of Antwerp. In his books and lectures he explains the principles of biology to the broad pub-lic and really knows how to capture their attention.

digital is the New Normal The revolution has begun

Peter Hinssen

• A challenging book: how can we distinguish ourselves by an intelligent approach to ormation technology (IT)?

• A guide on how to adapt management techniques to the newest chapter in the digital revolution

TEAMWERK

Nochtans ligt werken in team

effectief.

Werken in team overtreft

In zeven handige

The Conversity Model Clo Willaerts

• Making money with Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter• Revolutionary book on social media• How to guide conversations from costumers

Social media have changed traditional market-ing, advertising and even business models. In fact, traditional marketing no longer exists! Every day millions of people use social media for different reasons: to cope with information overload, to fi nd a new job… Some even hope to fi nd their next great love online. At the same time they also search for information and opinions from others to decide how to spend their money. Companies used to think of them as nothing but target groups, consumers and even prospects, but now these consumers use Facebook, Twitter, blogs and YouTube to participate in millions of conversations, which can be both valuable and redundant.

Observation, conversation, conversion and innova-tion. According to The Conversity Model these are the four steps a company has to follow when managing

social media and social networks. Clo Willaerts’ con-versity model gives an answer to the question that occupies the mind of many entrepreneurs: ‘How can my company benefi t from social media?’

It shows that the right approach can boost the popu-larity and – more importantly – the sale of a product or service. The book includes numerous case studies from successful campaigns on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Clo Willaerts is an Internet professional and runs the business unit for social media at Sanoma Maga-zines Belgium. She is also the driving spirit behind the ‘Brussels Girl Geek Dinners’, an informal network for women with a passion for IT and the Internet.

Feit.

What stimulates a climate of silence and prayer? What is effective solidarity nowa-days? How can we start over and serve the real life?

The starting point is a saying older than Christianity: ‘The world leans on three pillars.’ The fi rst pillar being study and wisdom, the second one prayer and silence, the third is charity. Together they make an indestruct-ible tripod.

Benoît Standaert is a Benedictine monk in the Abbey of Saint-Andries in Zevenkerken. He studied in Rome, Jerusalem and Nijmegen. Both in Belgium and abroad he is involved in educational and training programmes. His book The Jesus Space is a milestone and was trans-lated into several languages. Wisdom from the Desert, Living with the Psalms and God’s Treasure were all very well received.

A Rule of Life for Beginners Benedictine spirituality for everyday life Wil Derkse

• A bestselling book on the implementation of the Benedictine rule on our everyday lives

• A practical guide to a more relaxed leadership and management style• Over 50,000 copies sold

Wil Derkse is associated with the Benedictine order, yet is very much a worldly man. In A Rule of Life for Begin-ners, he wants to interpret the Benedictine spiritual prescriptions for a life outside of the monastery walls. The simple, down-to-earth attitude of the Benedictines can offer a valuable perspective for a revision of one’s mode of life. The core of its spirituality is not about new insights or mystical experiences, but rather about living a regular and satisfactory life.

A Rule of Life for Beginners offers an alternative source for an orientation in life, especially for those who are in a position of responsibility. This book applies the prin-ciples of the Benedictine rule to a life within organisa-tions and focuses on leadership and time management. Especially the art of knowing when to begin and when to

stop will allow readers to lose the feeling of ‘being busy’. The Benedictine rule will inspire readers to go through the motions of the day with a relaxed, listening attitude. This will allow for a more satisfying and successful life.

Wil Derkse, bound by oblate vows, is associated with the Benedictine Abbey of St.-Willibrord, Doetinchem. Having studied chemistry and philosophy, he worked as a chemistry teacher for many years. He became the scientifi c principal of the Radbound Foundation in 1987. Since 1994, he has been an extraordinary professor in the Technical University of Eindhoven. He also writes for several magazines such as Streven.

Torn between Good and Evil Roger Burggraeve & Ilse Van Halst

• An invitation to lead a morally balanced life• A look at evil in our society through biblical texts• Offers an alternative view on reality and the choice between right and wrong

Family tragedies, brutal murder, aggression on public transport, racism, revenge, abuse… In today’s world we are confronted with all kinds of evil. But this is not something new. The Bible is already full of stories on the kinds of evil man brings about. Guided by 9 biblical stories, Burggraeve and Van Halst examine a whole range of malevolent acts, searching for the reasons why people do wrong. They attempt to offer a clear judgment, but also pay attention to human vulnerability.

By translating Bible messages to contemporary society, the authors teach us how to contemplate the reality which surrounds us in a different manner. They offer insights which will spur us to take on moral responsibilities and resist the temptation of evil when we meet an ethical dilemma. This book is a source of inspiration, not only for Christians, but for all who want to make our society liveable.

Roger Burggraeve is an ethicist, philosopher and professor at the Catholic University of Louvain. His theological stance is informed by the ideas of the Jewish French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. Burg-graeve is also the cofounder of the Centre for Peace Ethics at his university.

Ilse Van Halst is a journalist for the religious maga-zine Kerk en Leven.

Previously, these authors collaborated to write All Questions of our Lives.

The Spirit of Father damien Jan De Volder

• A search for Father Damien’s true spirit• Based on Vatican sources

Every generation has its own view on Father Damien. He lived among Molokai’s lepers and after his death in 1889, he was treated and respected as a Saint. His body’s transfer to Louvain in Belgium caused an un-rivalled stir at the time. Even today few Belgians have experienced the worldwide fame he enjoyed and still enjoys.

It is a strange fact that interest in him and his work has not waned through the years. On the contrary, his popularity not only survived time, but also seculari-sation and in 2005 he was elected greatest Belgian of all times.

What makes people from different cultural backgrounds and even religions show so much interest in Damien? What is his secret and which aspects of his life touch people around the world?

Historian Jan De Volder, who was granted access to Vati-can sources and even the documents of his canonisation, seeks for answers to these questions, in search of Father Damien’s true spirit.

Jan De Volder is a professor of Contemporary History and has a Master’s degree in Romanic Languages. As an editor for the magazine Tertio, he writes articles on religion, culture, politics and society. He previously collaborated on Trialogue, a book featuring surprising conversations between a rabbi, a priest and an imam.

During the research for this book, John Paul had the unique chance to meet Johannes Paulus II four times and have spoken to Benedictus XIV six times. These sincere and informal talks gave me valuable information.– Tom Zwaenepoel

Tom Zwaenepoel studied Germanic languages at the Universities of Ghent and Bayreuth. Nowadays he teaches German at the abbey school of Zevenkerken and he is connected to the University of Ghent (German training programme).
