Forces exist all around us all the time

Force act on all objects, like this car.

• Forces are needed to make the car:– Speed up– Slow down– Change direction– Stay on the ground

WHAT IS FORCE?

A force is a push or pull

Lifting, stretching, twisting, pressing

Cannot be seen. Its effects can be seen

and felt

Has magnitude (value) and direction

There are many different types of forces

Gravity is the force that pulls objects towards the Earth.

Friction is another force that is all

around us

Friction occurs whenever two objects are in contact with each other

For example, there is friction

between the shoes and the floor surface

It causes moving objects to slow

down. It is a resistive force.

If the engine is turned off, friction slows the train down until it

stops.
