An update on the Canadian pesticide ban from our friend PamCharbonneau, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food,Turfgrass Specialist, from the Guelph Turfgrass Institute

A pesticide ban was enacted in Ontario, Canada, and went intoeffect in the spring of 2009.

This ban effectively moved all traditional pesticides from beingused on home lawns and municipal grounds.

Golf courses were exempt from the ban, but are currently follow-ing very stringent IPM plans that involve enormous amounts of

paperwork and educational cert ification.

The biggest surprise, from my perspective, so far, is how peopledo not seem to be bothered by the ba n any longer.

Wrong !

Homeowners have come to accept the weed issues in the early spring, and now that most of the dandelion flowers have beenmown off, the lawn looks great from the curb.

Wrong !

The other interesting surprise, from the industry perspective, isthat most companies have been able to remain successful through

the ban by offering additional cultural practices, such as aera-tion, overseeding, more regular fertilization.

There appears to be greater recognition that without pesticides,there is greater need for supplemental culture to enhance thehealth of the lawn and avoid the need of pesticides.

Wrong !

A note about pesticide alternatives a lack of access to tradi-tional materials has spurred interest in alternative products,such as high rates of ferrous sulphate for selective weed control,which is found in Fiesta Herbicide, sold by the Scotts Company,corn gluten meal, and nematodes for grubs.

Of these, the Fiesta seems to have achieved a MODERATE level of success.

From research at Guelph, it appears that 2 to 3 applications dur-ing the spring and the summer can provide significant selectivecontrol of broadleaf weeds.

Wrong !

In fact, the data indicate complete control of narrowleaf plan-tain is possible with the single application.

The challenges ahead while there have been SOME successeswith products such as Fiesta, others such as Sarritor biologicalweed control, and the use of nematodes for grub control, HAVE NOT BEEN AS SUCCESSFU L.

In fact, grubs still remain a MAJOR PROBLEM, and most are havingto reestablish areas after severe damage.

In 2010, Charbonneau said TWO applications were required.

Now, in 2011, Charbonneau is saying THREE applications are required.

In fact, adequate broadleaved weed control with Fiesta is only achievedwith an EXHORBITANT 6 to 8 applications per season.

Unfortunately, the Fiesta label allows a MAXIMUM LIMIT OF TWO APPLICA-TIONS PER SEASON .

Charbonneau has also indicated to fellow lunatic Frank Rossi ( Cornell Uni-versity ) that Nematodes and Sarritor are DISMAL FAILURES .

Charbonneau is also a Director of the Lawncare ( sic ) Commodity Group of LandsCAPE Ontario, which SUPPOSEDLY represents the interests of the EN-TIRE Professional Lawn Care Industry.

LandsCAPE Ontario is a Trade Association that, with Charbonneau as Direc-tor, CONSPIRED to IMPOSE the PROHIBITION of pest control products,which included conventional herbicides with the active ingredient 2,4D.

LandsCAPE Ontario is a Trade Association, with Charbonneau as Director,that also BETRAYED the Professional Lawn Care Industry.

At the very least, we should expect THE TRUTH from Charbonneau and theUniversity of Guelph especially about the use of Fiesta Herbicide.

The Fiesta label says MAXIMUM TWO APPLICATIONS per season.

We know Pam, just spotspraying, right ?

Spotspraying with Fiesta does not count as an additional application.

That is how Charbonneau JUSTIFIES her constant MISINFORMATION .

And, there is NO FINE PRINT about spotspraying on the Fiesta label.

Moreover, there IS a spottreatment recommendation on the Killex label,the BANNED threeway herbicide with 2,4D spotspraying countsTHERE .

Even with her the weekly Turf Agriphone, Charbonneau provides MISINFORMATION that has become a JOKE for the Lawn Care Industry.

Charbonneau has BETRAYED the industry and GIVEN UP ON ALL OF THEM .

Charbonneau should STAND UP , and provide the TRUTH , not only about Fi-esta, but about Ontario's PROHIBITION and its effects, or STEP DOWN .

Otherwise, Charbonneau is VALIDATING PROHIBITION , and contributing tothe EXTENSIVE CARNAGE for Professional Lawn Care companies, in theform of HORRIFIC FINES and BUSINESS FAILURES .

Because of LUNATICTERRORISTPROHIBITION , the DEVASTATION of theProfessional Lawn Care Industry was EXTENSIVE because there ARE NOVALID ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVES TO REPLACE THE PROHIBITEDPRODUCTS including Charbonneaus Fiesta.

When compared to conventional products like 2,4D, VIRTUALLY ALL GreenAlternatives are almost TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE , except under very specificcircumstances.

The Green Alternatives, like Fiesta, are BOGUS .

They are DISMAL FAILURES .

Charbonneau is grabbing Ontario taxpayer money and spending it on BO-GUS UNIVERSITY STUDIES that result in ZERO BENEFITS for the Profes-

sional Lawn Care Industry.

2,4D IS SAFE and EFFECTIVE !

2,4D is SAFER and MORE EFFECTIVE than Fiesta.

Why doesnt Charbonneau point that out to the Ministry of the Environmentand the Ontario Liberal Party.

Dr. Len Ritter, the Guelph INDEPENDENT EXPERT on pesticide safety, isphysically mere metres away from Charbonneaus office, and yet, sheCHOOSES TO IGNORE his expert advice on 2,4D.

WHY ?

The Government of Ontario is even using Dr. Ritter to disprove the dangersof 2,4,5T, a constituent of, believe or not, Herbicide ( Agent ) Orange.

Charbonneau give us back 2,4D, and you play all you want with Fiesta.

Or, better yet, STEP DOWN .

Charbonneau ALLEGES that people in Ontario do not seem to be botheredby the ban any longer.
